Morton Castle, tucked away in a secluded glen near Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway, is a hidden gem among Scotland’s historic fortifications. Built in the late 13th or early 14th century, it was likely constructed by Thomas Randolph, a close ally of Robert the Bruce.

The castle was significantly rebuilt in the 15th century by the Earls of Morton, from whom it takes its name, transforming it into a more comfortable residence while retaining its defensive features.

Unusually, Morton Castle sits beside a loch, which may have once been dammed to enhance its natural defences. Its unique D-shaped towers and surviving gatehouse provide a glimpse into medieval Scottish castle design.

Though it fell into disuse by the 18th century and became a romantic ruin, the peaceful, picturesque setting and relatively intact structure make it a rewarding destination for history enthusiasts seeking a quiet, atmospheric site with ties to Scotland’s noble and royal past.
