29🇮🇳 Surviving My First Ride Into India’s Megacity MUMBAI! 🏍️🔥

We got to cross, we got to
cross!
Go, go, go, go, go — you!  Okay… bloody hell — after this bus. Good morning, world!
Welcome back to the channel.  It’s ride number 29 on our motorcycle adventure
here in India, and we are here in Karjat,   in the state of Maharashtra.
We stayed for the
past few nights in this beautiful green oasis,   with coconut palms and mango trees and a swimming
pool — and the whole place was just £16 a night.  India is good value for money.
But it’s
time to leave this beautiful oasis behind,   because we’re heading to the big city.
So, let me show you guys where we’re heading   today.
So, we are here in Karjat, and today we are
finally going to be reaching India’s most populous   city — Maharashtra’s capital: Mumbai.
Yes!
It will be a short but very intense   ride.
It’s already 7:30, so we’d
better hit the road. Let’s go! Okay, good morning,   Shanti.
Bye-bye, beautiful place!
It was actually much better than expected,   because on Booking.com, they had really bad
reviews.
But the place is super nice. I mean,   it’s very green, very pleasant.
Oh no… it’s locked!
Oh no… okay,   now I’m giving a bad review — wouldn’t let us
leave!
Hopefully it’s just fake… fake news?
Oh   yes — it doesn’t look very fake, I’m afraid.
We told them yesterday that we were   going at 07:00.
I’ll go find somebody.
No, thank you — ‘cause we’ve got to get to Mumbai!  Can’t see anybody yet.
Do you think they’re in
the room next to us?
There’s a person sleeping,   but I can’t tell if it’s the host or
if it’s a guest.
Yeah, it’s the host.  Good morning!
Morning.
Morning
— sorry for waking you up.
This   is the lock?
Okay, thank you, thank you.
Can’t smell anything.
They’re fake flowers — just   like the fake reviews.
Should we call this episode
“We’re Trapped”?
There you go — that’ll get the   views, won’t it?
That’ll get the views.
And it was the host’s daughter’s third   birthday yesterday, so he had a
little party with his family.
Very,   very cute.
She was dressed as a butterfly.
Thank you!
Thank you very much.
Bye-bye! Oh, I love the mornings in India.
They’re
so nice when the sun is just rising.
The   temperature is still nice and cool.
The
roads aren’t that busy.
I love it.  Yeah… Mumbai is still two hours away though, so
I don’t know how it’s going to be when we get   there.
And today is going to be a major milestone
of our journey — because Mumbai is pretty much the   halfway point between Kanyakumari and Ladakh.
Yes. And so far, the journey took us 29   rides.
We saw a lot of cool stuff.
We
experienced a lot of culture.
A lot of   different landscapes.
We saw a lot of wildlife.
It has been really, really nice so far.
We’ve seen   so many incredible things in just 29 rides
— I mean, it’s just unbelievable, really.  So this ride is going to be an end of
an era.
Mumbai is going to be a bit of   a pit stop for us — as we rest, and plan, and
prepare the next leg of the journey.
And also   get on with a lot of editing.
A lot of editing.
Because we have shot a lot of amazing rides,   but they don’t get onto YouTube unless we get
on the computer and start working on them. Whoa! Here’s a big group of
runners.
Yes! Good on you guys!  I think we need to go for a
run sometime soon…
Thanks   to all the wonderful Indian food,
I’m definitely in need of a run.  Anyway — let’s enjoy this bit of calm
before we go into the craziness of Mumbai. Oh no, we’re still over an hour away from the
city, and the road already looks like this.
Oh   my Lord. It looks like everybody else got up
early as well.
We should have woken up at 5.  Yeah, I’m just trying to stay
calm.
I’m just taking it easy — I   don’t need to do crazy overtakes
like these guys here, you know?
And   my job is to be the shield and protect
Lavy from behind and say, “Everybody,   no! Get away from my sweetheart!”
Okay, here — we have to make sure   that we go straight, I think.
Yeah, I can
see a sign for Goa — 550 km.
So don’t take   that one, ‘cause we’ve already been there.
All right — Mumbai: 58 km.
Let’s go, let’s go! Oh wow, there are some absolutely massive
developments going on on the side of the   highway here.
Look at this.
I think this is all
pretty new. I saw a sign that said Fortune City.  I mean, this is beyond anything I’ve ever seen
before.
Look at this — this is like housing to   the next level.
Wow. Huge buildings.
It’s a mega city.
It’s actually called   a global mega city.
The metropolitan area
is actually the sixth most populous in the   whole world — with 23 million people.
And the
city itself has a population of 12.5 million. We made it off the highway now — I’m
super happy about that.
And now we   are turning onto Palm Beach Road.
Let me
see if this road is lined up with… palms?  Whoa — where’s he coming from?!
So we found a spot on the side   of the highway to have a little rest and
collect ourselves before we head into the   city proper.
We wanted to stop at a cafe
normally, but we failed on that mission.  It was pretty much just the Palm
Beach Road, and on our side there   was just nothing.
And everybody’s just going
super fast, and the traffic’s just flowing.  But so far it’s been all right.
I’m just taking my
time, you know?
I’m just not getting too stressed. Google Maps says we’ve now
got 50 minutes to do 16 km,   and most of the line into the city is red…
So
I think we’ve got a lot of traffic to come.  Oh wow, look how much congestion!
Look
— every car is like standing still.  Yeah, so we’re just coming up to
the bridge that crosses—
Well,   I think it’s called Tana Creek — basically the
bay that separates New Mumbai from Old Mumbai.  And we’ve got our little biker lane — so thankful
for that!
Actually, on motorways, bikers are free   here in India.
On some highways, bikers can’t
go at all, and on others, they go toll-free. I would say, my love, if you just stick to
the side here where I am — yeah, that’s it.  Wow, somebody even managed to squeeze
in between me and you!
That is madness.  Oh, here we go, guys…
It begins.
Our journey into
Mumbai begins with an incredibly busy bridge.  Yeah, exactly — because the lanes are closed
here.
Ah, okay. Well that would make sense.  Okay, I’m blocking you so you’ve
got plenty of space.
Thank you. Yep,   all right — yes!
We are on the bridge!
We’re
on the bridge riding into Mumbai!
Happy days. Oh, I was hoping for some views…
Yeah,
on the map it looked like we would get   some more views — like of the whole city and
everything.
I can’t really see much from here.
I   can’t see anything… but it’s still cool.
I can just about see some big buildings   coming up in the distance.
I mean, this is a
pretty big bridge — it’s called the Tana Creek   Bridge.
I mean, this is more than just a creek!
Hey, look at this — it’s huge!
Hey, we are   proper Mumbikers now, hey?
Mumbikers!
Oh yeah,
I can get a glimpse of the city now, up ahead.  Wow, this guy here — he has a brave
job, cleaning the sides of the highway   here.
Wow. Good on them. Good on them.
Okay, I will go to the left as well here. Okay, yes, nice — we’re rolling!
So far,   so good. Everybody’s avoiding each other.
Oh
no… we’re stuck.
I’ll follow the bikers here.  It’s incredible — we already cut off 10
minutes from our Google Maps estimated time   just because we’re on the bike.
You’re
so screwed if you drive a car here.  Yeah, we’re just following the way of the
Mumbiker — skip as much traffic as humanly   possible.
I’m trying my best.
I think
I have to actually go over now, though,   because we have to turn in a second.
I’ll prepare
myself… already going over…
Oh no — I’m stuck! So guys, whilst we’re coming into the
city, I’m going to attempt to try and   remember some info about this city.
Mumbai is the capital city of the   state of Maharashtra —
But it’s not only
that. It’s also the financial, commercial,   and entertainment capital of all India.
It’s home to India’s largest stock exchange — the   Bombay Stock Exchange —
As well as the home
of Bollywood, India’s largest film industry.  The city is also the most
populous city proper in India,   with a population of 12.5 million people,
And
in 2008, it was named an Alpha World City. Okay, hang on guys — more info coming…
But I’m
just going to see what’s happening here first.  Hello!
Here’s a V-Strom!
Oh, look at
that — Suzuki V-Strom!
Which country?
Oh,   from England?
England! I like your bike. Nice to
meet you!
We have a V-Strom in England — 1050.  Yeah — India tour!
Oh! India tour? You
have to look at our YouTube channel!
Yeah,   I will!
Love and Ollie.
Yes, thank you!
There we
go — picking up subscribers along the way here in   Mumbai.
Picking up some Mumbikers.
Bye!
Yeah, just merge onto the right here… So, the name Mumbai comes from the Marathi
“Maha-Amba.”
Maha-Amba is actually the patron   goddess of the native Koli fishing community, who
were some of the first inhabitants in this region.  And actually, the place where the city now stands
used to be an archipelago of seven islands.
These   islands have been inhabited — archaeological
evidence suggests — since the Stone Age.  But in 1535, Mumbai, which was part of the
then-Mughal Empire, was surrendered to Portugal   and became part of the Portuguese Empire.
Then
in 1661, Mumbai was actually given to the English   Empire by the King of Portugal as a dowry when
his daughter married King Charles II of England.  But a major change happened in 1845,
when a large-scale land reclamation   project actually combined the archipelago
of seven islands into one single landmass. All right — here we go, we’re going,
we’re going.
So many tuk-tuks!
So many   tuk-tuks — it’s the tuk-tuk capital of the world.
In 1853, the first railway in India was opened   here, connecting Mumbai to the nearby town of
Thane.
And then, during the American Civil War,   Mumbai became a major trading hub for the cotton
industry, and that’s when the global prominence   of this city really started to grow.
But that prominence was solidified   with the opening of the Suez Canal
in 1869,
And that transformed Mumbai   into one of the largest seaports in the
Arabian Sea, and a major global city.  And then, to finish my story off — without
crashing — after Indian independence in 1947,   Mumbai was given to the State of Bombay,
which later became the State of Maharashtra. Are you still behind me?
Yeah — I managed
to remember my info, stay with you, and stay   alive.
Good job, my love.
I would have crashed.
But yeah — absolutely massive, crazy city with a   long and crazy history.
So much going
on here.
There is so much going on.  Oh, it’s red.
I don’t think anybody
cares…
I’m stopping… 3… 2… 1… Go!
Literally   no car stopped. Nobody stopped.
I mean, normally it gives the chance   for pedestrians to actually cross
safely.
The road here… but anyway.  Okay, only 3.1 km to go to get to
our hotel.
Let’s make it, let’s make   it!
Yeah — and then we can have some breakfast
because I am starving.
All of this info   remembering has worked me up an appetite.
Okay, up that left, over the bridge.
Okay.  Oh, there’s the railway!
Oh cool — connected
to India’s oldest railway!
And actually,   the train station of Mumbai is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Oh wow…  Why is this bloody car not going a
little bit faster?
I will go around it.  Okay, now we have to turn to the,
uh… left here.
Oh my God — how   does anybody cross a road here?!
Don’t know…
Okay — and then you have to go to the right.
Yeah,   this car in front definitely had a couple of bumps
— look at that.
We’re still trying to merge here…   oh, he’s going.
Still trying to merge — like that.
Okay, this is like right, left, right,   left — you know?
Yeah, yeah. This next
bit is pretty right-left-right-left.
Yeah,   ‘cause now here it’s to the right…
Yep, and
then now we have to cross over to the left.  Yeah, that’s it.
But then immediately to the
right again — bloody hell!
That was… interesting. Hello!
Hi, how are you?
Very good,
very good!
What’s your name?
My name is   Phil.
Nice to meet you!
You went to school?
Yes,
yes!
Very good, very good.
Yes, yes — you have   a nice smile.
Have a good day!
Bye!
Can I call myself now a Mumbaikar?
I   think you’re a bonafide Mumb.
Come on, come on, come on!
Up,   come on! Come on…
Oh no, he’s blocking my way.
You know, it’s actually not that scary.
I thought   it’d be way more scary.
But when you actually
do it, you think like, “Oh, you know what,   it’s actually not that bad.”
After 3,500 km so far in India,   I think you’re just desensitized
now.
You’re a proper Indian biker now.  I’m pretty sure at the beginning of the journey,
if you had seen this traffic, you would have—
Oh!   They say we can’t turn here?
What’s going on here?
This tuk-tuk says, “Don’t touch me.”
Oh,   that guy’s giving up.
Yeah — oh, we are so close. We are like 1 minute   away.
Uh-oh! Got to cross. We got to cross!
Go,
go, go, go, go!
Yeah? You okay?
Okay, now   straight — and then left — and then we’re there!
Come on, Mumbai!
Look, it’s a red light…
No,   no — I have to stop. I have to stop.
Come on!
Look, even this guy walking — he’s   like, “Yeah, I agree.”
Oh! It’s green!
Okay,   come on, come on!
Yeah, yeah, this is go, my
love. That’s it — after this bus.
Oh wait…   uh-huh… yep, yep, yep, yep!
Yes! There we
go! We’re in.
We’re in! It’s on the left,   I think it’s here.
It can’t be here…
Is it this here?
I think this construction   site is our hotel.
All right — anyway,
let’s see. Maybe on the inside it’s nice. Hello? Hotel Silver Park?
Yeah? Okay.  Luckily, the hotel room looks
really nice — and there’s a   window as well!
I’m super happy about that.  Um, but the lift is not working… and it’s on
the second floor.
Oh.
Thank you, thank you.  Okay — thank you.
Cool! Tada!
Yeah,
this will do absolutely fine.  Look how nice this room is.
And when he showed me
the room, the curtains were closed — so the first   thing I did was open the curtains, and you can
see…
Yeah — it’s a lot better than I expected.  There is scaffolding here, but it’s just
a little bit.
We actually have a bit of   a view, guys!
Yes! That’s so cool.
No, I’m
pleasantly surprised — so that’s really nice.  And look — very nice bed, we have
a little desk here, even a kettle,   which is really cool.
And then the bathroom
— look at this!
Beautiful brass tub. Amazing.  So the guy said that this hotel
is really new.
They just built   it one and a half months ago.
It’s really nice. But I’m really, really hungry, so
I think it’s time to get breakfast.  We just had a look on Google Maps of what’s
around this area here — see if we can find a   place to eat.
And there is actually a mall
just next to the hotel, so we decided to   go to the mall —
Where they hopefully have nice
air conditioning, and maybe some places to eat.  Hey, we’re in the big city — we
want to go to the mall!
We should   take advantage of it.
And yeah, let’s
see what an Indian mall looks like. Oh wow! I didn’t expect that — they have a Costa
Coffee!
You know, I think after quite a few   roadside coffees…
I think we’re due a cappuccino.
I’m fancying a cappuccino, for sure.  Wow, look at this, guys!
This is a mega
mall.
They’ve got a Uniqlo, they’ve got Guess,   French Connection, Zara, H&M, Marks & Spencer…
But
I want to know — where’s the food court?  There’s the food court, guys!
There’s
a Cinnabon, a place to buy mangoes…  We’ve entered the food court, and there are tons
of places to eat here — like every single type of   food that you would want:
There’s Chinese,
noodles, burgers, Subway, McDonald’s, KFC,   Domino’s…
There’s almost too much choice.
What do they got?
They have, like… buffalo   patties? Buffalo patty burgers?
I never ever ate buffalo in my   life.
Do you want to try it?
Okay.
Sounds interesting, huh?
Yeah, okay,   guys — I think we’re going for a buffalo burger.
Here we go — burger for you… fries for you!   Yay!
Wow, it’s not very often that
we have a burger for breakfast. So there we go, guys.
We successfully made
it into the city of Mumbai.
Very, very,   very different from where we started this
morning —
But I’m very happy to be here.  This marks the halfway point in
our journey —
3,500 kilometers from   Kanyakumari to here.
And I can’t wait to see
what the second half of India has in store.  I’m just so happy that I didn’t crash
while riding into Mumbai — the biggest   city here in India.
I’m super happy.
And that’s it from us today!
We hope   you enjoyed the video.
If so, please give
us a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel,   share the video with your friends and family,

Can't wait to say the North of India through your lens. Have safe and happy riding.. always waiting for your next video <3

  5. The histroy from Stone Age to English is what the invaders propagated everywhere. We had advanced Hindu culture since such a long time that it will be unimaginable to the stone age decendent west. The thieves even destroyed and supressed evidences.

  6. You are stone's throw distance away from my place. Let me know if you need my help with anything.

  7. Hola L&O,

Well, that was some crazy traffic, but you both handled it so well!

Lavi, did you ever imagine when you first started riding that you would be whipping in and out of traffic like Mumbai's?

I hope your stay there was restful, but fun.

Safe and happy travels, see you in the next one

    Lots of love, Sue. ❤❤❤

  8. Why is nobody commenting about under-construction hotel? I would be shit scared to go inside😂. You guys are brave.

  9. Welcome to my city…I stay vert close to the mall that you guys visited …have a memorable stay in the city that never sleeps…stay safe

  10. So how many days travel did 29 rides take you?
Mumbaikers! HaHa! Love it! You need to be a bit mad to ride there. Lucky you guys are! I'd love the madness too.
If you guys are readers, I recommend a book called "Shantaram" which is by an Aussie author and is based on his life in Mumbai.
What an awesome room you ended up in! Far better than first appearances! 🤣

  11. Prepare yourselves for Monsoon. The month of June and July fill India with rain all around. Buy some raincoats and materials which would help you keep dry in Monsoon. Get tyres for bike as per rain water and shoes too.
