I Stumbled into a Local Halloween Event at Nada Beach
Hello everyone!
Welcome back to another episode of Explore Oita Japan Today, we are here at Nada Beach
located in Kitsuki City in Oita Prefecture and this is one of the best places
to see sunrises in Japan [Explore Oita Japan] Nada Beach is a 100% natural sand beach, along
which is a forest of pine trees This beautiful forest is maintained and replanted regularly
by a local volunteer organization At the center of the beach
is the Hachiman Nadagu Shrine an important Shinto shrine that is closely related to
the high profile Usa Jingu Shrine located in the nearby Usa City Do you see that torii gate behind me? It has a huge history attached to it It was originally Hachiman Nadagu Shrine The island name is Ichikishima Island and the shrine itself is more
than a thousand years old The local people have a huge significance
and meaning attached to this place Imagine having the whole beach for yourself? Is that even possible right? Let’s go and meet a person
who can answer this question So we have here Mr. Sato with us
who is the owner of this place Mr. Sato, can you tell us more about this place? OK! Welcome to Nada Beach House This is a guest house
sitting right in front of the ocean and this guest house had been abandoned for about 5 to 7 years
before I found it on the internet In the 1970s and 1980s, it was a very popular area
for people to come and enjoy the ocean here But due to depopulation and an aging community not as many people came to this area
so it had been abandoned for that reason But I found this place and
thought it’s a really beautiful area right in the pine forest I also found a beautiful Shinto shrine
so we decided to renovate and rebuild it into a guest house again If you come to a place like this
you’ll notice there’s plenty of space It’s very quiet with no convenience store around If you really want to feel how Japanese people
have been living over thousands of years and if you really want to see
the real raw life of Japan – you’ve got to come out to the countryside
– Exactly We have only three rooms here
so this is for private use only We are primarily open in July and August but if you have a special request
I can open for other seasons too Do we have other activities to do here too? Yes, many people who stay here
enjoy a barbecue and also stand-up paddleboard We have 4 stand-up paddleboards We offer ocean kayaking. The ocean here is very calm
providing a safe environment for you to enjoy Also, you can go fishing and beachcombing – Wow
– Yes, it’s quite a peaceful place to stay I heard that there is an event tomorrow
so can you tell me more about it? Tomorrow, we have a Halloween event
Local people will decorate the whole pine forest into a haunted house Are foreigners welcome at the local events? That will make local people happy Seeing foreigners join local events is
something they enjoy, and they will welcome you By now, you know that the hospitality
especially in the local area, is amazing – Think about it
If I go to your country and I’m enjoying your food
you would be smiling, right?
– Of course – It’s the same thing
Come join and enjoy the food while enjoying the festival
– Sure. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s event [Music] Hello! So now I’m ready with my costume on
and ready to join this event The best part about this event is
not only the kids are in their costumes but also the adults So let’s check it out [Music] – Hello
– Hello Your dog is so pretty – What is the name?
– Marin-chan, nice to meet you How old is he? – 2 years old
– He’s 2 years old – It’s “she”
– Oh, it’s “she” – What’s your costume for today?
– Pirate Pirate! You look gorgeous – Very pretty
– Thank you very much – Hello
– Hello Hello – Your costume is cool
– Yes, it is This is a costume that looks like
you’re riding a dinosaur These are the legs It looks like I’m riding on a dinosaur I joined this event for the first time
and it’s been so exciting I’m having fun – Is that a new type of broom?
– Yes, it’s a modern-style broom. I used a floor mop Is Halloween popular in Japan? Lately, it’s become commonplace
to dress up for Halloween My daughter is six years old and she has activities like art and crafts projects
related to Halloween at kindergarten Halloween events are taking place every year – Hello
– Welcome – What is this?
– This is homemade umeboshi (pickled plums)
made from the plums grown on that mountain Could I have one pack please? 300 yen please Thank you so much Thank you so much – Here you are
– Thank you so much Thank you so much Can you see these things?
The local people gave them to me for free Thank you so much They might be a little heavy… Where are you from? – India, I’m Indian
– Enjoy! Thank you so much I got a full basket of different items
from the local people and I cannot believe
their hospitality and love towards me [Music] I did it! I’ve got so many items out here At first, I thought it has
a Halloween theme so everyone would be looking scary
and things like that but it’s more than that I mean people are enjoying themselves with their families
having quality time, I would say They’re enjoying themselves by the beach
eating various foods There are food stalls
and people selling handicrafts It’s just so good to see
all of these connections that people are making here Now we are in the field to play a game
and the game is that you have to flip the slippers that you wear and see how far it can go 3, 2, 1
Go! I’m second…
I did not expect it to be like this When you throw slippers
we do it at home all the time, throwing slippers here and there – But it was very good
– Mansi, your record was 22.96 ft Guys, the good part! My record is 22.96 ft It’s not that bad, it’s not that good
but it’s okay for first-timers, right? It’s okay but it was nice [Music] Mr. Sato, thank you so much
for inviting us to this wonderful event – We really enjoyed it
– Great! I hope you had a great time All the local people are waiting for you
to come back again next year Thank you so much
I just have one question for you Where can other people get to know
about these events? Good question You’ve got to subscribe to Explore Oita Japan! Bye bye! [Explore Oita Japan]

Kitsuki City, Oita Prefecture is a former castle town that prospered during the Edo Period, known as the “Little Kyoto of Bungo.” It remains full of traditional scenery like old samurai residences with cobblestone paths and plaster walls, and is home to Kitsuki Castle, said to be the smallest castle in Japan. In addition to the old streetscape, Kitsuki City is also home to the beautiful Nada Beach, selected as one of the Top 100 White Sand Beaches and Green Pine Groves of Japan.
This time, our host visited the Nada Coast, which stretches north-south for around 1.2 miles facing the Iyonada Sea. A magnificent forest of black pine trees lines the beach, making it one of Oita Prefecture’s most iconic and scenic coastlines. Plus, on a small island just off the coast is Hachiman Nadagu Shrine, which has long been a place of worship for locals.
Tucked within the coastal pine forest is Nada Beach House, a small guesthouse boasting a fantastic location just a 10-minute drive from Oita Airport, and is known for having one of the best sunrises in Kyushu. We spoke directly to Mr.Sato, the owner of Nada Beach House, to learn about its history and more. During summer, it opens just three guestrooms, letting guests fully immerse themselves in countryside nature and the Japanese way of life while enjoying BBQs, SUP, kayaking, and other activities.
One of the best things about visiting Oita Prefecture is being able to easily meet locals. When our host visited, there was a Halloween event being held on the Nada Beach. In Japan, Halloween is for both children and adults to dress up and enjoy food and activities. Our host too donned a costume and face paint and joined the event while interviewing the dressed-up locals. You can see their amazing costumes in the video. Finally, our host joined the locals and tried their hand at a certain gameーhow will they fare?!
We hope this video inspires you to visit Nada Beach House to enjoy relaxing activities by the stunning Nada Beach, and meet the friendly Kitsuki City locals!
