Hi everyone, I am Adventurer P. In this episode, I will take you to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco on a Ding Ding car. Fisherman’s Wharf is where you can go to Alcatraz, see sea lions , eat sourdough clam chowder , and eat chocolate ice cream at Ghirardelli Square. Well, there are many more places to go to at Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf has the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and the USS O’Brien, a transport ship built at the end of World War II. The steam engine of the USS O’Brien has appeared in the movie Titanic. You can also explore the living space of the crew. There is also a very interesting mechanical museum where you can see game consoles from the 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, I will take you to see the famous Lombard Street (Lonely Lane) next to Fisherman’s Wharf. In addition to Alcatraz, which we will use another episode to introduce, the above-mentioned Fisherman’s Wharf attractions will be introduced to you . Then follow Adventure Pig! We will start from Union Square, the starting point of the Ding Ding car. There are three Ding Ding car lines: Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, California The starting points of the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines are both at Union Square, so you can see the Ding Ding car turning around here. It is often crowded with tourists. Now we are going to take the Powell-Hyde, which is the most popular route because its starting and ending points are Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf respectively , and it will also pass through Lombard Street (Lonely Lane). Although the Ding Ding car tickets can be purchased with physical tickets , the adventurous pigs buy Muni+cable tickets. The electronic one-day pass on the phone of the car can be used for unlimited rides within 12 hours. Adventure Pig will make another episode of the guide to introduce you to the transportation in San Francisco. Friends who have questions about buying tickets can also ask first. Adventure Pig will try to answer you within the scope of his ability. The ticket price of the Ding Ding car, whether it is a one-day ticket or a one-time ride, is 8 US dollars. In fact, it is quite expensive. However, the Ding Ding car is a means of transportation that was created to adapt to the ups and downs of San Francisco. It has a retro appearance and historical traces of use. While riding the Ding Ding car, you can walk through the busiest streets of San Francisco and feel the unique ups and downs of San Francisco . Even if the price is a little high , who can resist the charm of the Ding Ding car? Of course, you must ride it at least once when you come to San Francisco to experience San Francisco. There are also cable cars. Although Adventure Pig did not visit this time , the locals who live in San Francisco highly recommended this museum. If you are a cable car fan, don’t miss it. Does it take a long time to wait for the cable car? Indeed, there are quite a lot of people waiting for the same line. There is a bus every 20 minutes. Adventure Pig started queuing at about 9 o’clock in the morning and waited for about 20 minutes. Some people deliberately did not take the bus at the starting point so that they could hang on both sides of the bus, just like the scenes seen in many movies. We are now walking on Hyde Street. When we see the sea view in the distance, we know that we are almost at Fisherman’s Wharf. I wonder if everyone is like me. As soon as I arrived at Fisherman’s Wharf, I couldn’t wait to see the sea lions basking in the sun . It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the place where we get off the car to Pier 39. Then we can hear the calls of sea lions when we are still some distance away from the pier. The best time to see sea lions in San Francisco is in winter because in summer most sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands to breed. So the best months to see sea lions are from August to May of the following year. After seeing the sea lions at Pier 39, we will walk around Pier 39 and have the long-awaited sourdough clam chowder. Let me first introduce today’s Fisherman’s Wharf itinerary. First, we will see sea lions at Pier 39 , then eat clam chowder and visit souvenir shops at the nearby Pier 39 shopping street, and then visit the USS O’Brien at the nearby Pier 35. Then walk about 10 minutes to the Mechanical Museum , and then walk about 10 minutes to Ghirardelli Finally, take the tram to Lombard Street. Pier 39 Shopping Street is always crowded here. There are fashionable hat stores, sightseeing boats at Fisherman’s Wharf, and amusement facilities that adults and children like. You can find ice cream, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops here . Almost every souvenir shop sells San Francisco University T-shirts, hats, and baseball caps. Although the prices are not too cheap compared to Taiwan , they are still reasonable. If you want to completely protect your wallet here, you should have a lot of determination and perseverance. Adventure Pig also bought a baseball cap here as a souvenir. Then it’s time for the happy clam chowder. It’s about 10:30 in the morning, and there are not too many tourists. You can comfortably and leisurely eat a bowl of sourdough bread clam chowder. It’s really a blessing. When it comes to San Francisco’s bread bowls filled with clam chowder, you must never forget Boudin Bakery. Boudin Bakery maintains the sourdough bread flavor that has never changed since the gold rush era in San Francisco. Founder Isidore Boudin is an immigrant from France. He was a skilled baker in France. He immigrated to San Francisco and founded Boudin Bakery in 1849. In the past 100 years, many local businesses have gradually changed their practices, but their sourdough bread making method has never changed. There are three branches at Fisherman’s Wharf. Each store is crowded with people. In addition, some stores also sell Boudin’s own peripheral products. The products are very beautifully designed. Although the adventure pig came to Boudin Bakery as a tourist for the clam chowder , if you observe the locals carefully, you will find that the locals are here specifically to buy their sourdough bread. It can be seen that their bread has an unshakable popularity in San Francisco . To be honest, the adventure pig is not very accustomed to eating sourdough bread alone , but it is just right when paired with the slightly stronger clam chowder. One bowl is very filling. Boudin Bakery They also offer sandwiches and burgers. If you come with family or friends, you can order a bowl of clam chowder and a sandwich to share and enjoy different delicacies. If you like their clam chowder, don’t forget to buy canned food from Boudin to bring back to Taiwan as a souvenir. There is also a Boudin Bakery store at Gate A of San Francisco International Airport that is open until 11pm. Let me tell you that there is an aquarium next to Pier 39~ Parents can also consider bringing their children here to play. Jeremiah O’Brien is one of the only two surviving Liberty ships of the 2,751 built by the United States to fight German U-boats in World War II. She is also one of the 5,000 ships that survived the D-Day landings in Normandy during World War II. Her 2,500 horsepower steam engine also makes her one of the few remaining steam ships in the world. If you have seen the Titanic, you must have seen her steam engine. The life of the O’Brien has been full of miracles. Let’s explore the interior of this ship and learn about her history. Let’s go back to December 1941. On July 7, the Pearl Harbor incident occurred , and the United States decided to join World War II. The United States participated in two major battlefields, namely the Pacific battlefield and the Western European battlefield. At that time, the German U-boats carried out intensive bombings on the Allied sea transport ships, interrupting the supply line in the Atlantic. At that time, President Roosevelt of the United States ordered 18 shipyards in the United States to quickly build Liberty Ships. The Liberty Ships, which were low-cost , quick to assemble and easy to operate, were manufactured in large quantities to support the maritime battlefields during World War II. The O’Brien was one of the Liberty Ships that were produced in large quantities . After 65 days of production, On June 19, 1943, the 441-foot- long USS O’Brien, which can still travel at a speed of 11 knots while carrying 9,000 tons of containers, was officially born in South Portland. The USS O’Brien is a transport ship . The ship is divided into the front and rear decks. The central part of the deck is the crew room we just saw when we came in, and the restaurant , kitchen and leisure space we will see next, as well as the navy’s special rooms and the infirmary . The central part of the ship is the steam engine device of the hull. The reason why the USS O’Brien is still in operation and open to tourists is thanks to a large number of American volunteers and funded civilian groups. In fact, the USS O’Brien was placed in the Huysen Bay north of San Francisco after World War II and waited to be scrapped . Later in 1979, Thomas J. Patterson led a group of volunteers to restore the O’Brien to its current state. Therefore, you can see staff and engineers everywhere on the ship. Next, let’s go down the stairs to see the steam engine of the O’Brien. The O’Brien sailed a total of seven times during World War II , passing through Britain and Northern Ireland, South America, and even reaching India and Australia. The voyage length was as long as 29,000 kilometers. It also participated in the Normandy Landing, an important battle in history. It was driven by the 2,500 horsepower steam engine here. This ship uses fuel to generate power and transmits it to the gear room on the deck. Once the gear starts to run, the ship officially starts to sail. It happened that there were no other tourists on the day that Adventure Pig came, so we were lucky to have the opportunity to see the gear room. That is because the O’Brien has a steam engine device that is rarely seen now. The crew of the Titanic used a special method to shoot so that the engine room of the O’Brien looked much larger to become the engine of the Titanic. Although the engine is not running now, one of the scenes of the Titanic was shot here. Because Adventure Pig is a layman in machinery , although he thinks it is cool, but Yes, I saw it but didn’t understand it. If you are interested in the operation of steam engines, you can have a chance to see the engine officially running on the third Saturday of every month. Let’s go back to the deck and take a walk. The staff and engineers on the ship are studying the way this ship anchors. After all, this ship was made 82 years ago according to British design drawings. Many designs are very different from today’s ships. The engineer on the ship said that even he had to relearn the anchoring operation of the O’Brien. The O’Brien is a transport ship. It was previously equipped with 5-inch and 3-inch turrets. Now only 3-inch turrets can be seen on the ship. The muzzle is now pointing in the direction of Coit Tower, one of San Francisco’s landmarks. The most recent miracle of the O’Brien was that on the evening of May 23, 2020, a fire broke out in the warehouse at Pier 45, right in front of the O’Brien. The O’Brien, which was originally docked at Pier 45, miraculously survived the fire thanks to the efforts of the police and firefighters. Go along the pier towards the Mechanical Museum. Along the way, you can see the 150-foot SkyStar Ferris wheel and the beautiful sea view. The PAMPANITO submarine next to the Mechanical Museum and the Hyde The ancient sailing ships at Street Pier were once open to the public for visits , but now the ships are being repaired. The service center staff said that they might return to the San Francisco Pier in the summer . It’s a pity that I didn’t have the chance to see them this time. The Mechanical Museum is the world’s largest private antique mechanical museum with more than 300 collections. There is no admission fee , but let’s exchange some copper coins first. We can play these mechanical toys from the 18th and 19th centuries later . The machines here only cost 1~2 quarters (0.5 US dollars) to play. The machine in front of you is the most famous laughing Sal in the museum. She will even laugh until she chokes on her own saliva. There are also many different fortune-telling machines here, and they will spit out fortune-telling cards for you. In the end, I chose a machine full of birds. The founder of this collection is called Edward Galland. Zelinsky has had a great passion for antique machinery since he was a child. He started collecting antique mechanical toys at the age of 11. He participated in World War II and continued his collection after the war. Now several of his partners are working together to run this museum (Edward passed away in 2004). There is very little information about this museum in Chinese on the Internet, but Adventure Pig really recommends everyone to come to this museum. There are so many interesting things to see , and not only can you see them , you can even play with them yourself. People with noise anxiety may have to be patient, and there are more weird machines~ The French guillotine and the opium smoker. Next, let’s take a look at some of the fun series, which are also the performance and performance machines that Adventure Pig likes. By the way, while enjoying these machines, let me share with you the security issues in San Francisco. Since the epidemic, the problem of homelessness in San Francisco has worsened. Before traveling to San Francisco, my friends kindly reminded Adventure Pig to be extra careful. So is it safe to travel in San Francisco by yourself? Is there anything special to pay attention to ? Let me just say the conclusion~ I think that as long as you follow the following three things when you come to San Francisco, it will be a very safe and super fun city. First: Avoid the Tenderloin area and don’t live around that area. Try not to get close to the city hall around 6 o’clock in the evening (it’s okay during the day). Second: Go back to the hotel after 7 o’clock in the evening and try not to hang out outside . If you really stay late and want to go back to the hotel, call Uber instead of taking the bus. Third: No matter which area you are playing in, be prepared for theft and theft. Adventure Pig can’t pay attention to the things on his body because he has to take pictures at the same time, so the most important items are hidden in the anti-theft bag and stuffed inside the clothes. I think the above three points will not affect my travel plan at all , except that I wanted to join the night ghost tour but couldn’t join it. After all, the fun attractions are not in dangerous areas. People in San Francisco are very friendly~ The scenery is beautiful and the food is delicious. Except for the occasional second-hand marijuana. Adventure Pig likes San Francisco very much~ I will definitely come to travel again if I have the chance. Adventure Pig also stayed in the Mechanical Museum for almost an hour. It was so interesting here. Then I realized one thing, that is, no matter what era, entertainment is a very important thing for people, just like the happiness that travel brings us, the body, mind and soul need to be well taken care of, so that the world we see will become better. Let’s take a slow walk for 10 minutes to Ghirardelli Square. There are also many souvenir shops along the way, and even galleries selling many painters’ works. The station of the Ding Ding car is in the square in front of Ghirardelli Square. We will take the bus to Lombard Street here. The first thing to do when we get here is of course to eat Ghirardelli Ghirardelli’s ice cream and milkshakes are really expensive. I remember that this cup cost more than 10 US dollars. But it was really delicious and completely different from ordinary milkshakes . If we use the ice cream cones we can eat in Taiwan as an analogy, it’s probably the difference between McDonald’s ice cream cones and Cremia, the god of ice cream from Hokkaido. I felt so happy the moment I ate it. I’ll talk about losing weight when I return to Taiwan . After eating the ice cream, come and take a look at these chocolate souvenirs. There are various sizes, different packaging and flavors for you to choose from. Because I’m not going to give them out to the office, I finally decided to buy a large piece of this chocolate as a souvenir for my family who couldn’t travel with me in San Francisco. At the same time , I also bought a lot of chocolates from the popular American supermarket Trader Joe’s to bring back. According to my family, he thinks Trader Joe’s chocolate tastes better. XDDD Ghirardelli Square has many high-end restaurants, shops and breweries in addition to the Ghirardelli chocolate store. There is also a 5-star hotel that costs $30,000 a night. This beautiful red brick building, which was originally a chocolate factory, is now one of the important landmarks of San Francisco. If you come to Fisherman’s Wharf, you must definitely come here. Our last itinerary today is to see the Lombard Street Ding Ding car, which is known as the Nine-Curved Flower Alley and is always crowded with people. It is parked at the intersection of Lombard Street. Under the condition that it is impossible to shoot from the air, the best angle for shooting is to walk down and stand directly in the middle of the street facing Lombard Street. Most of the cars passing by Lombard Street are also to shoot the special scenery here . Therefore , you can even see people riding motorcycles and scooters while taking pictures and riding down next time. Adventure Pig will also challenge to see what it feels like to ride a bicycle down~ Do you think a day at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco is both fulfilling and fun? We have many more San Francisco travel vlogs . See you next time~ Bye
