治承4年（1180年）に源頼朝が居を構えた鎌倉は、南方を海に、それ以外の三方を丘陵に囲まれた要害の地でした。そのため、陸路を鎌倉に入ろうとすると、その多くは細くて急な尾根越えの山道か、危険な波打際の崖下の道であったと思われます（古代の「古東海道」がこの地域を通っていたと考えられますが、具体的なルート等は明らかになっていません）。13世紀前半、執権北条氏の権勢が確立する頃になると、鎌倉も政治経済の拠点として発展しますが、頻繁となる物資や人々の往来にとって、急峻な尾根越えの交通路は大きな妨げとなりました。その難渋を取り除くため道幅を広げ路面を切り下げるなどして、後に「鎌倉七口」などと呼ばれる切通路が整備されたと考えられます。名越切通は、鎌倉と三浦半島とを結ぶ要路の一つです。周辺には、切通の防衛にも関係すると考えられる平場や切岸、やぐらや火葬跡など葬送に関する遺構も多く分布していて、中世都市の周縁の歴史的景観を良く残しています。

Kamakura, where Minamoto no Yoritomo established his residence in 1180, was a fortified area surrounded by the sea to the south and hills on the other three sides. For this reason, if you tried to enter Kamakura by land, most of the way was a narrow and steep mountain path over a ridge, or a dangerous path under a cliff at the edge of the water (it is believed that the ancient “Kotokaido” road passed through this area, but the specific route is not clear). In the first half of the 13th century, when the power of the regent Hojo clan was established, Kamakura also developed as a political and economic base, but the transportation route over steep ridges became a major obstacle to the frequent movement of goods and people. To eliminate this difficulty, the road was widened and the road surface was lowered, and it is believed that the cut-through passages, which were later called the “Seven Passes of Kamakura,” were developed. Nagoe Kiridoshi is one of the key routes connecting Kamakura with the Miura Peninsula. In the surrounding area, there are many remains related to the defense of the cut-through, such as flat areas and cut banks, towers, and cremation sites, and the historical landscape of the outskirts of the medieval city is well preserved.
