日本、東京都台東区にある上野恩賜公園を訪れました。見下ろす坂の先に広がる薄紅の景色は、かつて誰かと見た記憶の影のようで、ほどけるように落ちた花びらが足元をすり抜けていくたび、歓声や笑い声の奥に隠された静けさが顔を出し、不忍池に映る光と空白のあいだで、私は何も語らずにただ立ち尽くし、この春の終わりに置き去りにされたような気がしていました。
坂を上りきるころ、足元にかすかな疲れを感じていた。
人が多かった。けれど不思議と、音が遠かった。
視界の先に、色づいた並木道が現れる。
桜だった。老いて、細くなった枝から、それでも咲こうとする花がいくつも、無防備に揺れていた。
誰かが「桜のトンネルだった」と話していたのを思い出す。今はもう、空のほうが広い。
屋台の香り、コーヒーを持つ人、立ち止まらない列。
喧騒はある。でも、なぜだろう。
そのどれにも、自分だけ馴染めていない気がした。
不忍池のほとりに出た。
池の上に風が流れ、花びらがいくつか、迷うように漂っていた。
対岸を歩く人影が、水面の揺らぎの中で滲んでいた。
私は、目を細めた。何を見ようとしていたのかは、わからない。
目黒川も行くつもりだった。でもやめた。
歩けなくなったわけじゃない。ただ、十分だったのだ。
この空気、この広さ、この騒がしさの裏にある、
何かをもうこれ以上、壊したくなかった。
最後に、西郷隆盛像を見上げた。
誰もがそこで立ち止まる。けれど、何を感じているかは、誰も口にしない。
私も、言葉を持たなかった。ただ、風の向きが変わった気がしただけだった。
桜は咲いていた。
でもそれは、私のためじゃなかった。
私はただ、その場にいた。
それだけなのに、なぜか、忘れられない午後になった。
