Just doing a little side journey to beautiful Siena Welcome to our design suite One of the great things about staying is everybody goes home in the afternoon back to Florence I’m so sorry I used your last piece of bread to clean my plate Look! I could be eating all that! There’s something magical about travelling in the early hours for just a moment, it feels like the world belongs to you thank you (thank you) Grazie. See you next time (bye) Good morning travelers Welcome back to Naples. We’re catching a train to Siena It’s a bit less chaotic than Rome A typical Italian breakfast. Cafe et croissant and you eat it like this. And they are always so good! This is where everybody waits to find out what platform they have to go to You’d think they’d know in advance It’s like waiting for the lotto results. Italian efficiency Four Getting closer Is this car two? We’re now at that stage of the journey Oh, here we go. Leaving Naples we’re first heading back to Rome then continuing north to Florence the capital of Tuscany before transferring to a local train bound for Siena Siena isn’t always on the main tourist path most visitors only stop on a day trip But we’re staying and that makes all the difference Back again for a few minutes We are off again Next stop Firenze Santa Maria Novella We’re only 20 minutes late Toilet report. The train’s been travelling for about 2 hours and it looks in reasonable nick. Excuse me Grazie Easy peasy I did the toilet report (Did you?) I give it a seven out of ten It smells like a urinal. Smells like a urinal? Welcome to Florence, for an hour Ehhhh! Just doing a little side journey to beautiful Siena We’ll be back here in two days Like Rome Florence has one of the busiest train stations in Italy but being half the size it somehow feels twice as crazy It says it all, more chaotic than Rome (yeah) but on a smaller scale Regional trains leave from platform 1 to 6 tucked away on the Western side of the station For Trenitalia regional trains you don’t need a seat reservation, just hop on in and find a spot Unlike Naples Circumvesuviana this train is modern, clean, quiet, comfortable and air conditioned Luggage storage; and Inta! 2:20 (We left on time) Siena is a classic Italian Hilltop town with the train station at the bottom and the old city way up on top and after what feels like an endless series of escalators we finally arrive at Antiporto di Camolia There’s the train station way down there Which is just a short walk from Siena’s ancient city walls and our hotel the Relais Degli Angeli historic residence For once we didn’t pick the cheapest room. We picked the best. And after a short ride in Italy’s tiniest lift We arrive Welcome to our design suite in Siena we’ve got this beautiful big lounge area with a smart TV through here to a very Lux bathroom and his and hers vanities. It’s all marble. There’s your robes and slippers. Ah, through here to our bedroom Nice big bed, very comfy, great mattress And we have a dressing room. Isn’t that ah, “Nine and 1/2 Weeks”? I think it is I like to watch you move. Hahaha Most of you kids wouldn’t know what that was (No, that’s right). (thunderclap) Are you having a wonderful evening? I’m dry! (thunder) A bit different to last night? oh yeah There’s no thunder and lightning I’ve never experienced any thunderstorm quite like that Hmm pretty vicious. Bonjourno travelers. Welcome to Siena We’re doing a tour this morning A 2 hour walking tour of Siena and the Basilica This morning’s tour is a 2 hour city walk and skip the line visit to Siena’s famous cathedral Booked through “Get Your Guide” We’re meeting our tour at the Basilica Cateriniana A 12th century Gothic church dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena This morning we’re on a tour with 29 other people by far the biggest tour group we’ve been on we’ll see how it goes Our guide shares a quick history of Siena from its days as a powerful medieval republic to the era when the Medici family of Florence ruled it from a distance then it’s time to step inside the cathedral No pictures inside the church. We must respect all rules. I’ll find some pictures on the internet, and show you what it looks like it’s pretty big on the outside The basilica is devoted to Saint Catherine A 14th century nun, writer, and one of the patron saints of Italy Very impressive Siena is all about history The city is divided into 17 contrade, or neighborhoods, with deep historical roots each with its own flag, animal symbol, colours and identity Siena is all about the horse race. Of the 17 contrada, 10 of them get to fight it out twice a year in the main square to see who is the champion. It’s like an extension of the religion. They all have their champions, which are the horses, and their flags. If you win you get to fly the flag and get drunk It’s my kind of race! We make our way across the city to the heart of Siena and the home of the Palio; Piazza del Campo Do they bet? (No) It’s forbidden to do it. You see, maybe the horse doesn’t even want to win It’s hard to believe every July and August it’s transformed into an insane medieval racetrack. We leave the Campo behind and climb through Siena’s winding streets toward the cathedral A masterpiece of black and white marble, and one of Italy’s most iconic churches You always think you have a big group, until you see the other group It’s breathtaking isn’t it? A beautiful sculpture by Michelangelo. Siena’s 13th century Duomo is a Gothic masterpiece. Striped marble, towering columns and art from Donatello, Bernini, and even Michelangelo They once planned to make it the largest cathedral in the world until the Black Plague of 1348 stopped them mid-build. What’s left though is extraordinary. Back into the light. They’re still working on the cathedral (At a great height) That was really good. I enjoyed that tour (Yeah) even though there was a lot of people on it She, she kept it well paced, and I think everybody felt included. Yeah it was really good Definitely well worth doing I’ll leave a link for it down below with “Get Your Guide”. Don’t be afraid to click it Lunch time (Always lunch time) Speck, Brie and rocket and mine is baked ham, mozzarella, and tomato (Yummo) Always time for coffee! Italian coffee is very good but not very strong, so you can have 10 a day After an unexpectedly delicious lunch stop we set off to explore the city that’s the thing i’ve learned about Italy. Even the shit bits look great Siena is both compact and beautiful. You can happily wander aimlessly through its lively lanes and meandering alleyways, never quite sure what you’ll stumble across next I’ve been here before a lifetime ago on a Contiki tour around Europe and it was two days before the race so the street was covered in sand ready for the horses You can’t forget that not only are these streets packed with tourists but they’re also still (Streets!) streets with cars (with cars) and buses. Here comes the bus Timeless travel classics. (You don’t want this one do you?) What’s that? A Death in Tuscany! (laughter) You don’t need to buy a book. You could just watch this video As the Tuscan sun begins to set the crowds of day trippers start to thin, leaving behind just the locals and the lucky few like us, who get to stay in this incredible setting We set off into the evening in search of dinner Italians are so civilized. There’s a time for walking, a time for drinking, and a time for eating. It’s eating time Osso Buco Bon appetito That was so good! Unbelievable! I’m so sorry I used your last piece of bread to clean my plate Look! I could be eating all that! (laughter) Does it jiggle? (It does) The nice sweet tang of the berries on top. Mmmm. Buongiorno travellers (Buongiorno) We’re going to see Dave Next stop, Florence What’s the collective noun for tourists? A sliver? A gaggle? Even bigger than the ones made by Michelangelo for the Sistine Chapel crowds The crowds. The chaos. I mean a lot of people do know. If you know you know (laughter) We’ve got a week to explore it all I’m trying to work out why all these people are doing Tai Chi? It’s beautiful It’s intense It’s Florence Ultimately, this is the reason you come to Tuscany
Most people only visit Siena for a few hours. We stayed for two days — and discovered a quieter, deeper, and more local side of the city that most tourists never get to see.
In this video, we explore Siena’s medieval streets, stay overnight in a beautiful design suite, join a walking tour with skip-the-line access to the stunning Duomo, learn about the Palio and Siena’s unique contrade system, and enjoy some unforgettable Tuscan food — with a thunderstorm or two thrown in for good measure.
If you’ve ever wondered whether Siena is worth more than a day trip, this video shows what it’s like to slow down, stay the night, and experience the real heart of Tuscany.

You're absolutely right! The best way to enjoy and appreciate a place is to experience it day and night, particularly if it's not a big city! You get a different perspective.
Nice one Mick. You did forget to mention the Strade Bianchi, a fabulous bike race across the white gravel roads ot Tuscany that finishes in the same square as the horse race. Weirdly, ive just been watching a strge of the Giro that is finishing there as well (from Sunday). Staying for a week nearby so will add the collingwood cathedral to the list.
