Caught in a Scandal: Goodbye Italy

Bari, buongiorno! This was my room in Bari and it’s time to leave This is Freedom neighborhood Quartiere Libertà It’s a popular neighborhood of Bari Here on the corner there is my favorite bakery They make a really really good Focaccia Barese I really love it I went there are so many times This park is called Giardini Garibaldi Garibaldi’s Gardens This park divides the city from Quartiere Libertà to the more affluent neighborhood This is basically the city center of Bari and then we get to Bari Vecchia, the old town Nice buildings The palaces they have weird names this is called palazzo del governo the government palace next one is this weird looking palace it’s called palazzo dell’economia the economy palace I don’t know what they do there here there are a few streets very commercial with all the shops h&m, zara prada and Barri Vecchia is on this side so maybe we enter Barri Vecchia from here Barri Vecchia when I was very young it was a it was kind of a rough area because traditionally families that they’ve been living there a lot and it was kind of rough but I think 20 30 years ago they did some urban project and they cleaned it up and the people that live there probably realized they were better off making a living out of tourism than petty crime OK In the morning there is lots of traffic but usually it’s just pedestrians Now we go around maybe there is a it’s really nice but as you can see very touristy and there is a couple of streets where there are the old ladies making orecchiette Bari is very famous for the orecchiette and there’s one lady I think she’s quite famous on youtube as well she goes around the world now like teaching people how to make orecchiette but there are very nice and charming corners as you can see it’s beautiful Beautiful alleys Very beautiful I wanna show you inside there are very nice courtyards If I can find again the street where they make orecchiette this is the Cathedral I can’t find the street with the with the orecchiette makers a lot of these places are becoming airbnb, bed and breakfast, things like that slowly but surely bar Ivecchia is changing See the Orecchiette but there is a place where you see the woman making it can’t find it anymore beautiful beautiful corner back at the cathedral The wild boar face Probably have sausages, salami and things like that made with the wild boar All these trees, the olive trees, the plants, they have been paid by IKEA I think in exchange for the people to show some of the products like these things but yeah they paid for the renovation of the square I know you don’t believe me but I have proofs IKEA with the municipality gifted the citizens a new square and plants and stuff, it’s like the urban furniture Largo Albicocca, Piazza degli Innamorati, 2017 See, I’m not a bullshitter Hello Ma’am Yeah guys I can’t find the street where they make the orecchiette I think I found it I go around I think this is the street see how they make the orecchiette that is the tv program so there is this tv program that they they do a kind of investigation slash satire and they are investigating the fact that some of these women they claim to sell handmade orecchiette but in fact they just buy the industrial one and sell them to tourists at an inflated price because they claim to be handmade and the first girl she was running to the the first lady that she was making some orecchiette saying like this tv program is coming remove everything and that concludes a comprehensive visit of Bari Vecchia oh it’s windy and it’s cold it got really cold the day before yesterday rained or yeah I think yesterday rained in the morning and it got really cold the temperature dropped five degrees six degrees Mickey D’s it’s on this corner always very important to locate Mickey D’s and Burger King in every city that’s a fish market but it’s probably late there is only one stall yeah nothing too interesting I guess and now we follow the coast for a bit I thought I was gonna get the ferry to Greece from Bari but actually I’m gonna ride a little more and go to the next province over to Brindisi and I will take the ferry there this is the boardwalk of Bari very long several several kilometers and it’s very windy, headwind it’s gonna be fun today Paneficio Monte Cristo, this is a good bakery 15 kilometers out of town but of course it’s closed why is it closed? if it’s closed today it’s terrible because very good bakery and then you get to eat on the beach this is Torre a Mare where the people from Bari come to hang out have some drinks and a bite, especially fish today there isn’t much going on but it’s winter there is a little port with the fishermen look at this, focaccia barese slow entry to Polignano a Mare even in Polignano a Mare there isn’t much going on but let’s have a look around I don’t know if I want to do the whole tour of the old town because yeah it’s getting late It’s gonna be dark soon I’m gonna take a nice picture here This is a big bridge Nice beach Medieval ruins or Roman ruins Who knows Let’s have a look around very quickly to see some alleys They start to become all the same these places very nice but I like the facade of that building Let’s have a look at the church from the front simple church nice the sea sound’s estate I think on Wednesday there are more shops closed than other days maybe it’s the the day of the week that the shops they close half day or one day apparently different regions of Italy they have different days of rest it’s ever since I was getting to Rome that I wanted to eat a maritozzo I’m not going to leave Italy without eating a maritozzo so there you go this is a maritozzo it’s it’s basically a brioche filled with whipped cream Nicolo’ where are we? In Puglia Polignano a Mare look at this beautiful place loads of olive trees century old and Nicolo’ has been following me from on Instagram and YouTube and he invited me here and thank you for giving me a home for the night and his mom for the food yeah and I’ll see you on the road okay see you on the road back on the road yeah back on the road ciao look at this field all green between the olives they farm the celery and this is a very good celery it’s not one of the ones that they are all the same size all the same pale color no this is very dark look different sizes this is very tasty celery it’s the perfect celery for soffritto new day new adventure in Italy now we are off to Alberobello I was very close I might just as well pop there I’ve never been to Alberobello let’s have a look around and then decide what to do after Alberobello this evening is gonna rain tomorrow is gonna rain a lot so I need to think about my route and plan what the fuck Why? Why? Look at the beautiful olive farm and look at the pigs They come here and throw their trash here And obviously the animals, dogs, cats, they break the bags and it goes everywhere Fucking hell This is a rape to make orecchiette with cime di rape It’s the classic sauce for orecchiette It’s made with this cime di rape, this vegetable, and garlic and anchovy I think This is Alberobello And these are the Trulli Weird type of building It’s nice Very beautiful There isn’t much going on to be honest I just wanted to see the truly first hand I’m not gonna go inside because I’m not gonna get a very expensive accommodation I’m not gonna have dinner, lunch, nothing But it’s nice to see once in my life I guess Beautiful and charming Alberobello You can come here, stay in the trullo They’re all pretty much accommodation, Airbnb, hotels Bed and breakfast, restaurants, souvenir shops beautiful beautiful place to stay if you fancy it freezing temperature all of a sudden I had to wear a jacket and i’m heading back to bari if i have time to stop i’ll tell you why later look at that Trullo that’s so nice beautiful a bit too close to the main road though another nice village in puglia i search romanic i guess as well We are in Greece and I have the escort French couple and Greece English gentleman

Cycling the world – Europe: 199 episode
In this episode of my round-the-world bike tour, I leave Bari after a short stroll through Bari Vecchia, the charming old town. I planned to film the iconic nonnas handmaking orecchiette pasta, but instead, I stumble upon a TV journalist investigating a scandal tied to that very tradition. I continue down the scenic Adriatic coast to Polignano a Mare, where I’m warmly hosted by Nicolò, a longtime follower of my journey. The next day, I ride inland to the iconic village of Alberobello to see the famous trulli. But as the weather turns, I head back to Bari under pouring rain and hop on the first overnight ferry to Greece.

  2. I love your title for this video. Great photos (I’ve never been south enough in Italy to see Palm trees)

Also the music accompaniment of the postcards is great!

  3. Ciao Davide, che bici hai, ora? E che gruppo hai (crankset & cassesse.
Non so come si dice in italiano) di marce? Sei soddisfatto del granny gear della tua bici? Grazie e buon viaggio!

  4. So I guess that girl running and yelling was warning her fellow scammers of the camera crew? Wow, those are some narrow passages, nice job navigating through there like a boss with a fully loaded bike. Beautiful looking place.

  5. Very nice video again Davide, Bari looks a wonderful place. Any connections with Bari, did you live there? Safe journeys in Greece.

  6. Ciao Davide, se passi dalle mie parti (provincia di Bolzano) ti ospito volentieri. Buona pedalata.
