[📋🏺Brief History🏺📋]
The territory of Castel San Vincenzo preserves traces of a late-Roman agricultural settlement and a Christian oratory dedicated to Saint Vincent, dating back to the 5th–6th centuries. 2 – 12
Between the 7th and 8th centuries, three Lombard nobles—Paldo, Taso, and Tato—founded a Benedictine monastery near the oratory, on land donated by the Duke of Benevento, with the approval of the Pope. 3 – 12
Over the following decades, the monastery, known as San Vincenzo al Volturno, became one of the wealthiest and most influential in Europe, establishing a vast feudal domain called Terra Sancti Vincentii. 4 – 12
In the 9th century, the monastic complex underwent significant expansion. In 847, the abbey was severely damaged by an earthquake. 5 – 12
In 881, it was attacked and destroyed by an Arab-Berber raiding party. The surviving monks fled and returned only in 914, initiating the monastery’s reconstruction. 6 – 12
The origins of the village may date back to this period. The earliest known document is dated 942 and records a land lease near a fortified site (Castellum) located on a rocky spur close to the abbey. 7 – 12
In the 11th century, the village took the name Castrum Samnie and became the main settlement of the Terra Sancti Vincentii. 8 – 12
By the 14th century, two separate villages—Castellone and San Vincenzo—were already documented in the Chronicon Vulturnense (1383). 9 – 12
Fortification of settlements increased between the 11th and 12th centuries, driven by instability and Norman incursions, leading communities to relocate to hilltops for defensive purposes. 10 – 12
Until the 15th century, the area belonged to the Giustizierato of Abruzzo and later to Abruzzo Citeriore.Under the Bourbon Kingdom, Castellone was part of the province of Terra di Lavoro. 11 – 12
On February 17, 1861, following the unification of Italy, it was administratively transferred to the newly formed province of Campobasso. 12 – 12
In the decade after unification, the region experienced outbreaks of brigandage, including documented raids in January and July 1861. [Very pretty corner…🌻📸] 1 – 3
[⛪Church of St.Martin of Tours⛪]
Originally medieval, the church today features a late Baroque style. The façade is plastered stone, with a slightly curved pediment ad a Baroque architraved portal. 2 – 3
The square bell tower stands to the side, topped with a lantern and a circular spire. 3 – 3
The wall-mounted main altar is backed by an 18th-century wooden choir and surmounted by a painting depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary between Saint Martin and Saint Vincent the Martyr. [⛪Church of St.Stefano ⛪]
Dating back to the 12th–13th century, is the parish church of trhe town and overlooks Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III. 2 – 5
The current structure reflects multiple construction phases: the original Romanesque portal remains, featuring a frescoed lunette with the Assumption of the Virgin and Child between saints. 3 – 5
The Baroque-style façade includes a small oculus and a lateral bell tower with a spire. 4 – 5
The single-nave interior has groin vaults, a walnut pulpit on the left, side chapels. 5 – 5
The apse with a central tabernacle flanked by statues of Saint Stephen and the Madonna with Child is decorated with modern frescoes. 1. This was a very beautiful trip, Riccardo, ciao!
I loved this small, charming town ❤
Have a nice weekend, Riccardo, all the best!

  2. Absolutely loved this! It’s always exciting to see how others capture the soul of a place. I’m on a similar journey and love connecting with creators who share this passion!

  3. Beautiful as always 😊. Loved the stunning house. Very pretty green area. Grazie. 😊😊😊 👍. Chat next video 📹. Ciao. C

  4. Hola querido Ricardo.
    Gusto de verte de nuevo.
Excelente música de intro, gran trabajo, muy profesional como siempre, y muy bien documentado, mil gracias por todo ésto, un lindo lugar.
Un abrazo y mil gracias de nuevo

  5. The drone footage was amazing. I loved the music. And after watching, I was ready to pack my suitcase and head to the airport.
…But since that’s not going to work out at the moment, I can at least watch the videos of beautiful places.
    This one was beautiful

  6. A blue Panda right in the first shot? Man, if I could give that vid two thumbs up, I would! And that Panda Cross at 44:44, holy crap, that’s part of my italian dream right there!!!

I just realized that you don’t often see green/lush mountains in Italy! What a different landscape. They look straight out of Central America!

The views are spectacular, but those alleys must be a nightmare for whoever delivers furniture, LOL!

And that flower motif in the sanpietrini at 1:00:45 is not something you see everyday either. I’m fascinated by those little details. Italy is Italy. From one region or one town to the next, it’s exactly the same, yet it’s completely different!

  7. My dad was born in the next door village, Scapoli (Collalto), and when I was young we went often at il Lago di San Vincenzo during the summer holidays (we come from Belgium where my parents immigrated), but it been almost 20 years that I never had the chance to return there, unfortunally.
Whatever it be thank you so much for those sweet memories…
