I’m travelling to the Lake District in the north of England during the Easter break. I’ve visited the town of Windermere during my student days, and just the memory of that trip makes me feel as though I’m already fully enjoying the Lake District. The place has been a little distant from my mind until now. But this time, with a proper break ahead, I decide to journey southwards from Keswick to Windermere, gradually making my way down. First, I take a night bus to Cumbria, where the Lake District is located, and then hop onto a local bus that takes me further to Keswick. As I pass through the Lake District National Park, the hour-long journey flies by as I admire the view. I drop my luggage off at the hostel and set out to explore the town. There are shops I never see in London, including one dedicated to Peter Rabbit. Already, I feel a surge of excitement at the landscapes I can only encounter while travelling. I find a chocolate shop selling treats made in the Lake District, and I notice many Easter-themed chocolates on display as it’s customary to give chocolate eggs at Easter to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Of course, while Easter originates as a religious holiday, many people nowadays use it as an excuse to indulge in chocolate! Keswick is known as a market town, and every Thursday and Saturday, a lively market takes place in the town square. Now, it’s time to head to my main destination of the day: the lake. Derwentwater, quietly nestled among the mountains of northern England, is known as the ‘Queen of the Lakes’ due to its beauty. The lake, surrounded by towering mountains and rich forests, offers a view so breathtaking that it feels like stepping into a painting. On the lake, people can take a leisurely boat ride on a Keswick Launch, enjoying the scenery from the water. Whether crossing to the opposite shore or completing a full circuit, each option offers its own pleasures. I walk along a footpath towards Surprise View, a famous scenic spot located on the southeast side of the lake. It’s cloudy today, but having lived in the UK for several years, I’ve learned to see the positive side: “At least it’s not raining!” John Ruskin, a naturalist from the Victorian era, once described this place as “(it) is one of the three or four most beautiful in Europe”. and he holds it in deep affection. The serene lake and the powerful mountains beyond offer a spectacular view. After a short rest, I continue on my way. Derwentwater has several small islands scattered across it. One of them, St. Herbert’s Island, is said to have inspired Beatrix Potter’s ‘The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin,’ making this a place where fiction and reality beautifully overlap. This is one of the unique charms of the Lake District. I reach another boat dock and leave the footpath to climb a steep hill. The incline is more challenging than I expected, and I have to catch my breath with every step. This bridge is reportedly the second most photographed in the UK, just after London Bridge. (really!?) It’s a small, stone-built bridge, offering a stunning view of Derwentwater beyond. As I reach the scenic point, I’m reminded that such views are never easily found. But perhaps that’s true of everything in life. The things I attain after putting in the effort and time often turn out to be far more beautiful and memorable than those that come easily.

ワーズワースを知るきっかけとなったのが
“Daffodils(水仙)”と言われることもあるこの詩。↓
友人がこの詩を空で詠めたのが印象的…という
何の変哲もない出来事がきっかけですが、
こうして旅の内容を濃いものにしてくれました。

イギリスには春になると本当にたくさんの水仙が咲きます。
この先イギリスの地を離れることになったとしても、
黄色い水仙を見るたびにイギリスの春を思い出すんだろうなぁ。

七五調のリズムが日本人にとって心地良いように、
英国人の耳にも心地の良い英語のリズムというものがあるそう。
英詩ではそのリズムは「弱強五歩格」と呼ばれ、
ウィリアム・シェイクスピアも好んで使っていたらしい。

1つの単位(詩脚) が「弱い音節 → 強い音節」でできているリズムで、
1行にその詩脚が 5回 繰り返されるという意味です。
🌼 ワーズワースの「Daffodils」もこの形式で書かれているみたい。
I wandered lonely as a cloud
→ i WAN / dered LONE / ly AS / a CLOUD（弱強 × 5）
