I bought shrimp crackers too (¥200) They snatch them right out of the air They catch thrown crackers skillfully Feeding them was fun Got a minor injury from a beak though Taking a walk around the ship Found an arcade Event hall There’s also a cafeteria Having soy sauce ramen (¥850) The seafood broth is really good Sado Island visible in the distance Taking a nap now Around 2:30 PM, approaching Sado Island The mountains look quite high That’s a jetfoil Hydrofoil that travels about 70 km/h Connects Niigata-Ryotsu in 70 minutes Noticed an interesting sign This route on the ocean is actually National Highway 350 Route 350 connects Niigata-Ryotsu by boat Then Ryotsu Port to Ogi Port by road From Ogi Port to Naoetsu by boat again Island-only roads don’t meet national highway requirements But became national highway thanks to Tanaka Kakuei, former prime minister’s idea First time setting foot on Sado Island! The ferry terminal has souvenir shops Found gold bars Sado sis “gold mines" island after all These are actually chocolate boxes Cars streaming off the Okesamaru Trucks too – truly a "national highway" Now to explore Sado By the way: Sado Island Population: 46,084 (as of March 1, 2025) Area: 854.81 km² Second largest island after Okinawa About 7/10 its size First stop: car rental Small car rental until 2:30 PM two days later: ¥8,940 The town is similar to Noto Peninsula Cherry blossoms at peak bloom Sado is famous for crested ibises Visited "Toki no Mori Park" where they’re bred The mailbox looks kinda scary Toki no Mori Park 383-2 Shinho Nagau, Sado City Admission: ¥500 Japanese crested ibis went extinct in 2003 One of the last Japanese ibises After extinction, Chinese ibises were brought to Sado for breeding Hard to see through the netting, but that are ibises They don’t move much Finally caught one flying after much patience 😅 You can see ibises up close here Viewing ibis pairs through one-way mirrors This is a male ibis Female is in the nest and invisible Suddenly the female came close An ibis approached Came to the water area in front of the mirror Switched to wide-angle lens too late – it flew away 😂 Somehow they feel a kind of danger Oh well, too bad 😅 Successfully bred Chinese ibises – now over 500 on Sado This is the kind of view you get on Sado In autumn you can see them anywhere Especially around here This is Kamo Lake Largest lake in Niigata Prefecture Returning to Ryotsu Staying here tonight Guest House Jinku 195-3 Ryotsu Minato, Sado City They have private rooms too but I’m staying in the dormitory (¥5,002/night) This is my accommodation Now to explore Ryotsu’s nightlife Ryotsu is by Kamo Lake With a narrow land strip separating it from the Sea of Japan There’s a building like a ruin Looks like a closed hotel Like many regional Japanese towns Many shops here have shutters down Really feels like I’ve come far A shop recommended by the guesthouse Suiren 232-5 Ryotsu Ebisu, Sado City Started with draft beer Various Sado seafood dishes including sashimi Sashimi platter (¥1,000) From left: Inada (young yellowtail), Matoudai Amaebi shrimp Kagamidai Trying the Inada first The sashimi is sweet This is after all an island – high quality!

This time, I went on a 2-night, 3-day trip to Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture.
On the first day, I took the ferry Okesamaru from Niigata Port, and after 2.5 hours, arrived at Ryotsu Port on Sado Island. Surprisingly, this sea route is designated as “National Route 350,” even though it’s on the water.
After landing, I immediately rented a car and visited Toki no Mori Park, where crested ibises are bred. That night, I stayed at Guest House Jink and enjoyed delicious local sake and seafood at an izakaya in Ryotsu.
On the second day and beyond, I plan to drive around Sado Island and visit places like the Sado Gold Mines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
