I just arrived in Wanaka, a stunning lakeside town on New Zealandโs South Island โ and what I found here genuinely surprised me. From the moment I pulled in, it felt like Iโd stepped into a postcard. Surrounded by stunning peaks and crystal-clear water, Wanaka feels like the kind of place you hear about in whispers… a hidden paradise you almost donโt want to share.
In this video, I explore the town, soak in the calm beauty of Lake Wanaka, and hit the trails on a mountain bike โ only to unexpectedly stumble across a local beer and wine festival called RIPE. Locals, music, incredible food and drinks โ it was the kind of surprise that makes travel so unforgettable.
The next day, I take on one of the most iconic hikes in the country: Roys Peak. The climb was no joke, but the view at the top? Worth every step. If you’re planning a trip to New Zealand or just dreaming of epic scenery and small-town vibes, donโt sleep on Wanaka. This place is something special.

Don't sleep on Wanaka ? Theres already way too many tourists in town another 5 yrs and it will be a nightmare like Queenstown has turned into !!
I knew you would enjoy New Zealand, I have visited there 3 times, 2 Times on the Magic Bus tours and the last time I cycled on my own from Auckland to Christchurch Camping and Hostaling all the way, took me about 2 weeks, best thing I have ever done. Note I had never travelled anywhere on a bicycle before, there was some real challenging times including Volcanoes and extreme winds, but I completed the entire trip 50yrs of age:-)

When you go to the North island next time the Tongario Volcano Crossing is well worth the hike (done twice before)

Hey Paddy, loving your work! itโs been a while since our Antarctica expedition together. Pleased youโve finally discovered my second home – Wanakaaaa!!! I first came here in 2006 and 2 years later during another visit I applied for a loan to buy a Wanaka property. I told the bank loans officer that Iโve come here to die ๐ – got the strangest look, before explaining Iโd love to retire in Wanaka. Iโm heading back there again next week – thatโs the thing, you can never get enough of New Zealand ๐ฅฐ ๐ณ๐ฟ
