Exploring China’s Cliffside Village: This Is Not the Countryside I Imagined !

Today, I’ve arrived at a cliffside village in China — this is Xiayanbei Village, located in Xinchang County, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province.
The village faces the magnificent Nineteen Peaks Scenic Area, where nineteen jagged peaks rise and fall in harmony with the winding Hanfei River, creating a natural landscape painting. Due to its high elevation, Xiayanbei Village is often shrouded in breathtaking seas of clouds — especially after rain or in the early morning. Mist curls around the mountaintops, making the village feel like a paradise in the sky, a dream come true for photography lovers.
Surrounding the village are vast tea plantations. In spring, during the tea-picking season, the hills are vibrant and green, the air is fresh, and the area is perfect for hiking or cycling.
Looking at the modern, bustling Xiayanbei Village with developed roads and flocks of tourists, it’s hard to imagine that this used to be a remote, inaccessible mountain village. In the past, villagers relied on rugged mountain trails to get around, and local industries struggled due to poor transport. Tea and other agricultural products had a hard time reaching markets outside.
Thanks to China’s “Village-to-Village Road Access” project launched in 1998, major changes began to take place. Since 2014, the local government has built tea garden cycling paths, camping facilities, and connected the village to the Nineteen Peaks Scenic Area, creating an integrated “tea tourism” transportation network. With these developments, the village’s collective business income jumped from 120,000 yuan in 2020 to 1.1 million yuan in 2024 — a growth of over 800%!
It’s truly the implementation and expansion of China’s rural road development project that transformed this once-isolated mountain village into a lively and accessible destination!
