Integrating people, cultures and languages through the study of Global Tourism
The Department of Global Tourism offers students the opportunity to apply a well-grounded social science and scientific approach to exploring the emerging field of tourism studies. How can tourism bring together people with multiple cultures, languages and interests? What are successful tourism business strategies, and what kind of government policies should be applied? Students will seek to answer these questions, and more, through classes featuring interactive learning with Japanese and international students, the latest in digital technologies, and study of Kyoto, a center of Japanese traditional culture and international tourism. You will further develop your knowledge through in-depth seminars, the study of multiple languages and hands-on community engagement.

Learn about global tourism via study of various academic disciplines such as economics, business administration, sociology, and IT
Tourism involves communication for understanding multicultural relations. To understand the field it is helpful to apply analytical frameworks from different academic disciplines, including economics, politics, culture, and information technology. In the Department of Global Tourism, students learn how to analyze tourism from these varied perspectives, learning from real-world case studies and applying the latest digital technology and multiple languages. Of course, students will also learn the fundamentals about the travel and hospitality business, regional development, and community development for tourism as well.
Acquire language and digital skills that will be essential in business and society in coming years
In today’s globalizing and digitalizing society, foreign language and IT skills as well as the ability to engage with people around the world are essential. In the Department of Global Tourism, students can achieve mastery of a foreign language in classes tailored to their level, or they can study multiple languages utilizing the rich resources of Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. IT and Digital Literacy are required subjects, and there are many elective courses offered such as Immersive Technology Workshop that will foster the competencies needed to thrive in tomorrow’s digital and AI-based society.
Identify and solve societal challenges and improve communication skills through practical learning in Kyoto, in Japan and internationally
There is high demand for those with excellent critical thinking and communication skills in the business world. The Department of Global Tourism offers students a host of opportunities for practical learning in Kyoto, throughout Japan and around the world, such as the Community Engagement Program and various specialized seminar activities. Students appreciate this unique real world learning feature of our program, as practiced in courses such as Kyoto Studies and Kyoto Field Studies.
