For those of you on a budget and wanting to avoid the Khao San ghetto, check out Speck Bangkok.
It's a capsule hostel near the Phrom Phong BTS station, not far from Asoke station. Quiet, affordable, clean and secure. Strong A/C for those who just flew in from a cold country and need a break from the heat. Close to Em shopping malls, one of which has a nice food court with A/C. 2 supermarkets nearby if you want to self cater. Also lots of local food in the vicinity, like Great Shanghai which was featured in 1 of Paddy's videos.

I went to the Rock Pub on Fri 7th Feb to see some live music at about 9:45pm…and it was dead! Literally nobody in there. n fact, south of there, towards Victory Monument was also pretty lifeless! Wished we'd gone north towards Ari

I used to live on Sukhumvit 4, when I'm back on bangkok I usually stay on Langsuan. Last trip I had 4 nights and stayed in 3 hotels, one was in Ari. Lovely place – Bangkok Voyage Boutique. Walking distance from Ari BTS (and our favourite: Sushiro)
