［4K］Sacred Fire and Chanting! Todai-ji Nigatsu-do Shuni-e Ceremony

Join us on a peaceful walking tour of the Shuni-e Ceremony at Todai-ji Nigatsu-do, filmed yesterday in stunning 4K. Shuni-e, also known as the “Ceremony of Repentance,” is a Buddhist ritual that has been held continuously for over 1,250 years since 752 AD. The ceremony was established by Jitchu (実忠), a monk who was one of the key figures in the founding of Todai-ji. The purpose of Shuni-e is to repent for human sins, pray for world peace, and ensure a bountiful harvest.

One of the highlights is the Otaimatsu (おたいまつ) ceremony, where giant flaming torches measuring up to 8 meters long are carried along the balcony of Nigatsu-do. The fiery embers are believed to protect worshippers from misfortune. The ceremony reaches its climax on the night of March 12th, known as Omizutori (お水取り), when sacred water is drawn from a well beneath the hall and offered to Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Mercy.

Shuni-e has never been interrupted, even during wars and natural disasters, making it one of Japan’s longest-standing religious traditions. Walk through the historic temple grounds and immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere of this deeply sacred ritual.
