Winter wonders in Nagano – Totally white snow hike & frozen lake【長野･霧ヶ峰高原＆白樺湖】

① Kirigamine Highlands
Kirigamine is a famous spot for snow trekking in winter.
⛄️ We parked our car at the Kurumayama Kata Parking Lot Lot and tried the “beginner trail” which takes about an hour, heading to the top of Kurumayama.
❄️ It was pretty windy that day, and everything was totally white and hazy.
Impressed by the scenery that we had never seen before, we headed for the summit, but gave up halfway. Even though it was a “beginner trail”, it seemed to be set at a “beginner” level for those who are somewhat accustomed to snow trekking. For us true beginners, it felt like “intermediate +”.
However, even just a short walk was enough to enjoy the fantastic site.
📝 There seem to be guided tours, so if you are a true beginner, I think it is safest to join.

② Lake Shirakaba
🏞️From the Kurumayama Kata Parking Lot, take the beautiful snow-covered Venus Line for about 15 minutes to arrive at Lake Shirakaba.
The lake is about 1,400m above sea level and has a circumference of about 4km. It’s the central area of the highland resort area.
It’s especially popular in the summer because of the cool weather. There are various tourist facilities such as amusement parks, hotels, hot springs, and art museums. There are also plenty of activities such as golf, canoeing, and boating. (Some of them are closed in the winter.)
⛩️❄️When we visited in Feb, the entire lake was frozen and white, and very beautiful.
In some places, it is difficult to tell the boundary between the frozen lake surface and the ground, so be careful!
On the floating island of Lake Shirakaba, there is a small shrine called “Ikenodaira Shrine”. A red torii gate stands in the lake, which gives it a very tasteful feel. It is also perfect for photos!

③Lunch
📍Handmade soba noodles at Mokubo
A petit restaurant with only a counter table made of a single piece of Japanese horse chestnut wood.
They serve Shinshu soba noodles made with local spring water and locally ground flour from the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains.
We had “Touji Soba”, which is available only in the winter (October to June.) It comes with duck hotpot, and we dunk the soba noodles into the soup like shabu-shabu. It was our first time to experience this eating style, and it was a lot of fun. Of course, so tasty too!

①霧ヶ峰高原
冬の霧ヶ峰では、本格的なスノートレッキングが楽しめます。
⛄️車山肩駐車場に車を停め、車山山頂を目指して戻ってくるという１時間ほどの「初心者コース」にトライしてみました。
❄️この日は風が強く、一面が真っ白で少し先の景色も霞んでいるようでした。
初めて見るような景色に感動しつつ、山頂を目指したものの、途中で断念。「初心者コース」とはいえ、スノートレッキングにある程度慣れている中での「初心者」レベル設定のような気がします。本当の初心者の私たちにとっては、「中級＋」ぐらいの感覚です。
ですが、少し散策しただけでも非現実的な景色を十分楽しめました。
📝ガイドツアーなどもあるようなので、本当の初心者の場合は、そういうツアーに参加するのが一番安心かと思います。

②白樺湖
🏞️車山肩駐車場から、雪景色の美しいビーナスラインに乗って１５分ほど移動すると、白樺湖に到着。
標高約1400ｍ、1周約4kmの湖で、高原リゾート地の中心となるエリアです。
夏は避暑地として大人気で、遊園地、ホテル、温泉、美術館など様々な観光施設があります。また、ゴルフ、カヌー、ボートなどのアクティビティも充実。
⛩️❄️冬は湖全体が凍っていて、真っ白になっているので、とても美しかったです。
凍った湖面と、地面との境界線がわかりづらい箇所もあるので、うっかり湖面の方に踏み込んでしまわないように注意が必要です！
白樺湖の南の浮島には、「池の平神社」という小さな神社があります。赤い鳥居が湖の中に立っていて、とても風情が感じられます。写真映えもバッチリ！

③お昼ご飯
📍手打ち蕎麦 黙坊（もくぼう）
栃の木一枚板のカウンターテーブルのみの小さなお店。
地元の湧水と石臼で荒挽した八ヶ岳山麓の地粉を用いたこだわりの強い信州そば。
期間限定（10月～6月）の鴨鍋で温めて食べる「とうじそば」をいただきましたが、お蕎麦をしゃぶしゃぶの様にして食べるスタイルは初めてで、とっても楽しく、味も絶品でした。
