Fenghuang! What a beautiful name! But wait—this isn’t Phoenix, Arizona. It’s an ancient town in China.
I’m thrilled to visit another stunning destination in China: Fenghuang Ancient Town. According to the locals I’ve talked to, almost everyone in China knows about this place! It’s said to be the most famous small town in the country.
Located in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, this scenic spot is open all day and doesn’t require an entrance fee. Unlike modern Chinese cities, there are no skyscrapers here—only ancient buildings and streets. During the day, the town is peaceful with few tourists. If you visit at night, the entire place lights up with colorful displays. There are countless restaurants and bars, so you’re bound to find one you love!
Another great thing about Fenghuang is how affordable the accommodations are. Riverside guesthouses cost only about 100 RMB—such a great deal!
If you want to avoid the crowds, plan your visit during the low season from November to March.
