Suwa area has thrived in the production of precision instruments, particularly watches, after World War II. Plenty spring water and clean air make this area ideal for the production of precision instruments. It was often referred to as the ‘Oriental Swiss’ due to the high quality of its products.
The average depth of Lake Suwa is 4.7 meters (15.4 feet). During winter, the lake occasionally freezes over due to its shallow depth.
Kami-Suwa hot springs have abundant water sources, and numerous hotels in the area are situated along the lakeshore.
Katakurakan is a public bathhouse constructed in 1928 primarily for the workers employed in the silk factories, which were the main industry in the area at that time. Visitors can also enjoy a bath in a nostalgic or vintage setting.
The current Takashima Castle was rebuilt in 1970. When it was first constructed at the end of the 16th century, it was a unique castle that extended out into the lake.
There are several Sake breweries which have long histories along the national route 20. If you’re not the driver, it’s enjoyable to sample various kinds of sake and purchase your favorites.
