中華人民共和国江蘇省蘇州。
蘇州のすぐ隣には琵琶湖の３倍以上もある太湖がある。車で太湖沿いを1時間走らせ、太湖の南部に位置する小さな村へ来た。周辺一帯は太湖の恵みと温暖な気候により、中国有数の穀倉地帯・淡水漁業地帯となっている。長い歴史の中で発展した文化や街並みが残る。古くから水路が生活の要であった。水の上を行き交う小舟が独特の風情を醸し出す。この田舎出身のとある美女に出会った。彼女は東京でデザインを勉強し、帰国後太湖の辺りに自らのスタジオを構えた。センスの良さを活かし、様々なアクセサリーを作って販売している。何の変哲もない田舎でこのような人材が出てくるのは、やはり地域の歴史がなせる技と言えるだろう。

Right next to Suzhou is Lake Taihu, which is more than three times the size of Lake Biwako. After driving for an hour along Lake Taihu, I arrived at a small village located in the southern part of Lake Taihu. The surrounding area is one of China’s leading granaries and freshwater fishing areas, thanks to the blessings of Lake Taihu and its warm climate. The culture and townscape that developed over a long history still remain here and there. Waterways have been the cornerstone of life since ancient times. The small boats passing on the water create a unique atmosphere. I met a certain beautiful woman from this countryside. She studied design in Tokyo and after returning to her hometown set up her own studio near Lake Taihu. Taking advantage of her good sense of beauty, she makes and sells various accessories. The fact that such talented people emerge from a nondescript rural area can be said to be a result of the region’s history.

苏州旁边就是太湖，它的面积是琵琶湖的三倍多。沿着太湖行驶了一个小时，我们到达了位于太湖南部的一个小村庄。得益于太湖的恩惠和温暖的气候，周边地区是中国主要的粮仓和淡水渔区之一。长期历史发展起来的文化和街道景观依然存在。自古以来，水路就是生命的基石。水面上穿行的小船营造出独特的氛围。我在这个乡下遇到了一位美丽的女人。她在东京学习设计，回到家乡后在太湖附近成立了自己的工作室。她利用自己的高品味，制作并销售各种配饰。从一个不起眼的农村地区涌现出这样的人才，可以说是历史的产物。
