Qamdo, under the jurisdiction of the Tibet Autonomous Region, was called “Kang” or “Kemu” in ancient times. It is also known as Khamba and the Pearl of Eastern Tibet. It is located in the eastern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the upper reaches of the Lancang River. It is located in the area of ​​three rivers and one river (Angqu, Zhaqu, Sequ, and Lancang River). It means “the confluence of water” in Tibetan. It has been an “important town in eastern Tibet” since ancient times. Qamdo is located at the throat of the junction of Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan. It is a must-pass place for the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, and is also an important place on the “Ancient Tea-Horse Road”. It is located in a hub position for trade and commerce, and is known as the “Gateway to the Snowy Region”. In early 1960, the Qamdo Regional Administrative Office was established. The Regional Administrative Office is located in Qamdo Town. In October 2014, the State Council approved the abolition of Qamdo Prefecture and Qamdo County, and the establishment of prefecture-level Qamdo City and Karo District, with the administrative area of ​​the original Qamdo Prefecture as the administrative area of ​​Qamdo City.

In 2023, Qamdo City achieved a GDP of 33.404 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.7% at comparable prices.
