Jincheon, famous for ‘Saenggeo Jincheon’, has been an attractive place with a lot of water and wide plains, and a friendly people. At Sesecheon Stream, which flows in front of Gulti Village in Munbaek-myeon, there is the ‘Jincheon Nongdari’, which is the oldest stone bridge in Korea and has a unique appearance that resembles a centipede crossing water. This beautifully shaped stone bridge is said to have been built by ‘General Im’ in the early Goryeo Dynasty. t is a unique structure with no similar examples, and has been designated as a tangible cultural heritage of Chungcheongbuk-do. If you park in the parking lot and walk towards Nongdari, a large artificial waterfall will appear under the ‘Saenggeojincheon’ sign. This waterfall is open from April to October, but it was closed due to a breakdown when I visited, which was very disappointing. Nongdari is made by stacking small stones like fish scales and stretching them to resemble a centipede. The name ‘Nongdari’ is said to be made of stones that are tangled together like a basket made of bamboo, so it is written as ‘bamboo basket nong (籠)’, which means ‘Nongdari’. This stone bridge became narrower from the bottom of the river to the top and was made in an interlocking structure, so it was able to maintain its original shape without being washed away even by floods or heavy rain. After crossing Nongdari, there are several trails that take you around Mir Forest, and the recently opened Mir 309 Suspension Bridge is the most popular course as it is 20 minutes away. When you cross the Nongdari Bridge and go over Yonggogae where Seonghwangdang is located, the peaceful appearance of Chopyeong Lake unfolds. From here, if you go to the left, you will see ‘Sky Bridge’, and to your right, you will see the newly opened ‘Mir 309 Suspension Bridge’. The name ‘Mir 309’ was created by combining ‘Mir’, which means dragon, and ‘309’, which means a total length of 309 meters. As soon as it opened, it became a famous tourist attraction along with Nongdari. When you cross the suspension bridge, you can feel the thrill of the huge height and shaking. There is an observatory at both ends of the bridge where you can enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery. The wide view of Chopyeong Lake beyond the suspension bridge feels truly peaceful. At the foot of Boryeon Mountain in Jincheon-eup, Jincheon-gun, there is a temple with particularly beautiful landscaping, ‘Botapsa Temple.’ This temple was founded relatively recently in the 1990s on a site that was known as a temple site during the Goryeo Dynasty. The ‘Jincheon Yeongok-ri Stone Monument’, designated as a treasure, remains within the precincts, which suggests that it was a very prosperous temple during the Goryeo Dynasty. As you enter the grounds, he first thing that catches your eye is the beautiful and majestic three-story wooden pagoda. Generally, it is not easy to find wooden pagodas when traveling to temples except for ‘Beopjusa Palsangjeon’, but it is even more nice to see a beautiful wooden pagoda here. The wooden pagoda here, which is about 54 meters tall, is modeled after the nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple. Although it was built relatively recently, it is beautiful as it uses traditional construction methods. What is unique is that there are three Buddhist halls in one building. The first floor is composed of ‘Geumdang’, the main hall of Botapsa Temple, the second floor is ‘Beopbojeon’, and the third floor is ‘Maitreya Hall’. This temple has a short history, so it does not have many cultural assets, but as it is a temple founded and managed by nuns, it is famous for its particularly beautiful landscaping, making you feel as if you have entered a well-maintained garden. Perhaps for that reason, ‘Botapsa Temple’ was included in the ‘33 Beautiful Temples in Korea’ selected by CNN in 2020, beating out numerous other temples. At the Three Brothers Peak of Dutasan Mountain in Chopyeong-myeon, Jincheon-gun, there is the ‘Korean Peninsula Terrain Observation Park’ where you can overlook Chopyeong Lake, which closely resembles the shape of the Korean Peninsula. ‘Korean Peninsula Topographic Observation Park’ is located on the north side of Chopyeong Reservoir and boasts a beautiful scenery that harmonizes with the mountains surrounding the reservoir. Recently, the topography of the Korean Peninsula has been introduced in various places across the country, but here is known to be most similar to the actual shape, including the shape of Jeju Island. In particular, this place is adjacent to Jincheon’s representative tourist attractions, ‘Jincheon Nongdari’ and ‘Mir 309 Suspension Bridge’, so it is a good travel destination to visit together. ‘Baeti Holy Site’, located in Baekgok-myeon, is a sacred site for Catholicism that preserves the history of Catholic persecution during the Joseon Dynasty. The name ‘Baeti’ is a pure Korean word meaning ‘pear tree hill’, and was given the name because there are many pear trees nearby. This is a place where believers gathered to protect their faith during the persecution of the Catholic Church, and many believers were arrested and martyred here. To commemorate this history, it was established as a sacred site in 1977, and has since become a place visited by many Catholic believers and tourists. ‘Baeti Holy Site’, where you can feel peace amidst beautiful nature, is loved by many people as a place to remember a page of history beyond its simple religious meaning.
