日本最大のメガネ橋【碓氷第三橋梁】群馬県 Japan’s largest eyeglasses bridge [Usui Third Bridge] Gunma Prefecture
碓氷第三橋梁（うすいだいさんきょうりょう）は、群馬県安中市松井田町坂本にある鉄道橋で、一般には「めがね橋」の愛称で親しまれています。明治25年（1893年）に完成し、当時としては我が国最大の煉瓦造りアーチ橋として知られています。
碓氷川にかかる全長91m、高さ31mの4連アーチ橋で、設計者はイギリス人技師のパウナル。200万個以上のレンガを使って造られており、その美しい景観と芸術性から、国の重要文化財に指定されています。
めがね橋は、かつて横川と軽井沢を結んでいた碓氷峠鉄道の一部として建設されました。碓氷峠は標高960mの高山地帯であり、鉄道を通すには急勾配を克服する必要がありました。そこで、アプト式と呼ばれるラック式鉄道技術が導入され、めがね橋を含む6つの橋梁が建設されました。
碓氷峠鉄道は1893年から1997年まで運行され、その後は廃線となりました。
めがね橋は、周辺の遊歩道「アプトの道」から眺めることができます。また、橋の上を渡ることも可能で、そこから望む碓氷川と周囲の山々の景色は格別です。
特に、秋の紅葉シーズンには多くの人が訪れ、赤や黄色に染まった山々とめがね橋のコラボレーションを楽しむことができます。

Usui Third Bridge is a railway bridge located in Sakamoto, Matsuida-cho, Annaka-shi, Gunma Prefecture, and is affectionately known as the “Glasses Bridge.” It was completed in 1893 and is known as the largest brick arch bridge in Japan at the time.
It is a four-arch bridge spanning the Usui River, 91 meters long and 31 meters high, designed by British engineer Pownall. It was built using more than 2 million bricks, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its beautiful scenery and artistic value.
The Megane Bridge was built as part of the Usui Pass Railway, which once connected Yokokawa and Karuizawa. Usui Pass is a high mountain area at an altitude of 960 meters, and it was necessary to overcome the steep slope in order to run the railway. Therefore, a rack railway technology called the Abt system was introduced, and six bridges, including the Megane Bridge, were built.
The Usui Pass Railway operated from 1893 to 1997, after which it was abandoned.
The Megane Bridge can be viewed from the nearby walking path, Aputo no Michi. You can also cross the bridge, from which the views of the Usui River and the surrounding mountains are exceptional.
Many people visit in particular during the autumn foliage season, when you can enjoy the combination of the Megane Bridge and the mountains dyed red and yellow.
