"Yabata" – A custom unique to Kumamoto Prefecture Takase, Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture This time, we would like to introduce the "Yabata", which stood out at the "Takase Urakawa Iris Festival" in Takase, Tamana City. During the festival, brave arrow flags lined up along the Kikuchi River to welcome visitors. These arrow flags were donated by local people. In Japan, "Koinobori" (carp streamers) are well known. Carp are strong fish that live everywhere, including clear streams, lakes, ponds, and swamps. There is a Chinese legend that these carp become dragons when they swim upstream against rapids and climb waterfalls. This is the origin of the word "Toryumon" (gateway to the dragon). In honor of this vital carp, there is a custom of flying carp-shaped "koinobori" (carp streamers) high into the sky on the first Boy’s Day (May 1st) after the birth of a baby boy to celebrate the birth of a child. "Koinobori" (carp streamers) are recognized throughout Japan, but the custom of flying "yabata" (arrow flags) is only practiced in Kumamoto Prefecture. Like carp streamers, these yabata are set up early in the morning on April 1st to celebrate the first Boy’s Day after the birth of a baby boy. At the top of the carp streamer’s pole, a "name flag" with the family crest and the child’s name dyed on it is hoisted, along with a long, thin "musha nobori" (warrior flag) with warriors and other images dyed on it. The yabata originates from Kato Kiyomasa, the first lord of the Kumamoto domain, and is said to have originated from a flag being set up before dawn to stop enemy arrows during the Sengoku period. It is meant to deflect "evil arrows" that may be falling on a cute child, warding off evil. At the Takase Urakawa Iris Festival, there were rows of "Yabata", commonly known as warrior flags. 　いつも「すてモン熊本」の動画にお付き合い頂きまして、ありがとうございます。
少しでも多く楽しんで頂くために動画を用意しました。しばしの間、癒しタイムです！

　今回は玉名市高瀬の「髙瀬裏川花しょうぶまつり」でひと際目立っていた「矢旗（やばた）」を紹介しようと思います。祭り開催期間中は、菊池川沿いに勇壮な矢旗が立ち並び訪問者を出迎えていました。この矢旗は地域の方々から寄贈されたものだそうです。

　日本では「鯉のぼり」については良く知られています。鯉は清流はもちろん、湖、池、沼などあらゆるところに生息する生命力が強い魚です。これらの鯉が急流を遡り、滝を登ると竜になるという中国の伝説があります。これが「登竜門」という言葉の由来です。この生命力豊かな鯉にあやかり子供の誕生を祝う為、男の赤ちゃんが生まれて初めて迎える端午の節句（5月1日）に鯉の形をした「鯉のぼり」を空高く掲げ飾る風習があります。

「鯉のぼり」は、日本全土で共通認識されていますが、「矢旗」を掲げる風習については熊本県だけで行われています。この矢旗は鯉のぼりと同じく、男の赤ちゃんが生まれると初節句のお祝として４月１日の早朝に立てられます。鯉のぼりの支柱の一番上に、家紋と子どもの名前を染め抜いた「名前旗」とともに、武者などを染め抜いた細長い「武者のぼり」が掲げられます。矢旗は熊本藩初代藩主の加藤清正公に由来し、戦国時代に敵の放つ矢を夜明け前に旗を立て止めたことが始まりだそうです。可愛い子供に降り掛かる「魔の矢」を跳ね返して魔除けをする意味があります。

　髙瀬裏川花しょうぶまつりには、俗に武者のぼりと呼ばれている「矢旗」が並んでいました。良く見ると伝統どおりに家紋と子供の名前、それに勇ましい武将の絵などが鮮やかに描かれています。現代の矢旗らしさを感じるのは子供の名前に「キラキラネーム」があることでしょうか。それでは、短時間ですが美しく縁起の良い矢旗をご覧ください。
