Takaseurakawa Waterfront Green Park 2 Takase, Tamana City Description of Takaseurakawa Waterfront Green Park. The Kikuchi River flows through the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, and downstream of it is a tributary called the Takaseura River. A port town has flourished on this narrow river since ancient times, taking advantage of the water transportation on the Kikuchi River. Many vestiges of this history, such as stone walls and wharves, remain. In 1980, the National Land Agency designated the area as a model waterfront greening area. A walking deck was laid out around the Ura-kawa River area, and irises were planted along the river for about 500 meters. The flowers are at their best from late May to early June, during which time many tourists visit from inside and outside the prefecture. Also, near the Urakawa River, there is Takase Megane Bridge, a twin stone arch bridge that was built in 1848. Many picturesque historical heritage sites remain, including stone walls of houses that are believed to have been built by local merchants competing to build them. Being able to stroll around while admiring these sights is one of the attractions. Today I am at Takase Urakawa Waterfront Green Park in Takase, Tamana City. I came here to see the beautiful irises and stone bridges and walls that you can see here. This is my second time introducing this. Last time, we were unable to deliver satisfactory irises due to damage caused by flooding. I think it’s okay today. Starting downstream, you will stroll about 500m looking at the irises.
