When it comes to the Sanja Matsuri, one cannot forget the irezumi (traditional Japanese tattoos) of the Asakusa Takahashi-gumi yakuza group. Many famous women also have impressive full-body tattoos. While there are various pros and cons, Nishi-Asakusa is inseparable from the Sanja Matsuri. Although their appearance is quite intimidating, there were no fights or troubles, and the mikoshi (portable shrines) they carried were powerful and impressive. As an ordinary citizen, just hearing the word “yakuza” is frightening, but during the festival, being able to witness a world we rarely see, like their elaborate tattoos, made for a precious experience. This allowed a rare glimpse into a side of society we usually don’t get to observe.
