天津市，别称津沽、津门，是国家中心城市，四大直辖市之一。地处中国北部，海河流域下游，自古因漕运而兴起，唐朝中叶以后成为南方粮、绸北运的水陆码头；金代在南北运河与海河交汇的三岔河口一带设直沽寨，为天津最早的建置；元朝设“海津镇”，是军事重镇和漕粮转运中心；明永乐二年（1404年）正式筑城，雍正三年三月七日，升天津卫为天津州。雍正九年升天津州为天津府，下辖六县（天津、盐山、青县、庆云、南皮、静海）一州（沧州），1912年后天津府裁撤，其是中国古代唯一有确切建城时间记录的城市 。
