TOYAMA TRAVEL GUIDE ⛩️🍜 | 17 Things to do in TOYAMA, Japan

Our adventure in Toyama, nestled in the heart of Japan’s Toyama Prefecture, turned out to be the hidden gem of our trip – a delightful surprise that we stumbled upon quite unintentionally. We had added Toyama to our itinerary as a mere stopover, without much thought or expectation. Yet, from the moment we stepped into this captivating city, Toyama embraced us with its charm, making us wonder why we hadn’t heard more about it before.

Let me take you through our journey in Toyama, a city that quickly won our hearts. Imagine gliding down the Matsukawa River, where each bend reveals a new vista, or savoring the depth of flavor in Toyama’s Black Ramen and the delicate sweetness of Glass Shrimp. Our guide doesn’t stop there; we ventured out to Iwasehama, a quaint port and beach town, adding a refreshing coastal twist to our exploration.

Our tale begins with the majestic Toyama Castle, its history seeping through the ancient walls. We wandered around Toyama Castle Ruin Park, each step taking us back in time. The Matsukawa River Pleasure Boat offered us a serene escape, floating past scenes that seemed painted just for us. And oh, the culinary delights! A medicinal meal at Ikedaya Yasubei Shoten introduced us to healing flavors, while the Toyama Glass Art Museum dazzled us with its creative spark.

We didn’t just eat and gaze at beauty; we soaked in culture at the Matsukawa Chaya Tea House and meandered through a Sculpture Walk by the river. The view from the Toyama City Hall Observation Tower took our breath away, offering a bird’s eye view of this stunning city. A day trip to Iwasehama whispered tales of the sea, and dining on Glass Shrimp felt like a luxurious treat.

We also marveled at the Baba Family House and sought blessings at the Hie Shrine. The Toyama Black Ramen was a revelation, and Masu Zushi Toyama Trout Sushi a taste of heaven. Our journey wrapped up at Kansui Park, leaving us in awe of Toyama’s understated beauty and rich heritage.

Toyama, with its perfect blend of natural beauty, culinary wonders, and a dash of history, left an indelible mark on our hearts. It’s a city that beckons quietly but enchants deeply. Join us as we recount the top things to do in Toyama, Japan – a city that’s much more than just a stopover, it’s a destination in its own right.

  1. What a great gem of a city that you guys found. Also one of the better videos (all have been great) in this series. Every time I see one of your videos from Japan I really want Japanese food. Great job!

  2. I’m glad you’ve visited my hometown Toyama! Toyama is an unassuming place compared to Kanazawa, but a hidden gem. Yes, no trip to Toyama is complete without trying masuzushi (trout sushi).

  3. What a nice trip to Toyama! I've been all over Japan, but I've never been to Toyama Prefecture. It certainly looks like cherry blossom trees along the river will be beautiful in the spring (maybe about now in March 2024). Regarding the date on the trout sushi — 2023 was the 5th year of the Reiwa Era, and I assume you were there in October 2023, so the date indicates October 16, 2023 (Reiwa 5). It's probably the date the sushi was made. The year of the Emperor's reign is still used for years in Japan, so you need to get used to it if you live there. Here's a list that needs to be updated (I couldn't find a recent one, for some reason.) The Heisei Era ended and the Reiwa Era began in May 2019 when Emperor Akihito stepped down and his son Naruhito became the Emperor."History of Japan" https://doyouknowjapan.com/history/

  4. After years of planning searching etc my ideal Japan first trip TOYAMA has never been on my radar so this was esp interesting to me! What a lovely peaceful place I was wondering if accommodation were significantly cheaper on this side as opposed to Kanazawa per say?
Just realised I missed last week episode as I was travelling myself … so gonna watch it as I have it shortlisted
Thank you 🙏🏼 I’m enjoying it this Japan serie so sooo much

  5. Loving your clips. I find them informative even as a Japanese. Toyama hasn’t been on my radar either but is now on my list of places to visit. Looking forward to more adventures in Japan 😊

  6. Toyama is lovely, and that matcha mochi dessert/black ramen looks so delish…Definitely on my to visit and eat list now!

  7. Visiting Japan has always been a dream of ours! I think when we will finally go there, we will re-watch all your videos to make sure we go to the same restaurants – you seem to find such jewels! XOXO

  8. Such a cool video, keep it up!!

I’ve got a question, do you film all your footage it one batch, and then edit it all in one batch afterwards? So like 4 weeks of just filming, and then you go somewhere and edit for 4 weeks. Or do you film and edit the same day and post it the following day?

  9. I am traveling to toyama for a work trip and my husband is accompanying me. We will have 3 days to explore before my conference. I see online there are a ton of day trips, but this video looks like there are a ton of things to do city center. It's our first time to any Asian country. Would you recommend hanging in the city or seeing/ doing as much as possible?

  10. I will be going to Toyama on July to visit family and will be staying there for a couple of months. I really needed this video. Haha
