Portovenere is a town and comune (municipality) located on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the province of La Spezia. In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Regional Natural Park in Portovenere offers a unique landscape with its high coasts,

Caves and vegetation that permeates the atmosphere in any season with the changing shades of color. Piazza Giacomo Bastreri Gate named Porta del Borgo This gate, is a charming historical entrance that leads visitors into the heart of the medieval village.

Beyond this gate, you enter a maze of narrow alleys and small squares that tell stories spanning centuries. You enter the village, on its central alley, stepping on millenary stones… a journey through time! San Lorenzo Church

Also called as the Sanctuary of the White Virgin (in Italian: Santuario della Madonna Bianca), dated back to the Romanic era, work of the Antelami Magisters This church, with its Romanesque and Gothic architecture, attracts the attention of visitors. The Doria Castle An example of Genoese military architecture.

The castle has changed over the centuries in response to developments in military technology. The Church of St. Peter On the cape where this church stands today was a temple to the goddess Venus. The ancient Portus Veneris is believed to date back to at least the middle of the 1st century BC

View from Via Olivo I went to a trattoria about a 15-minute walk along the coast from the city center to have a delicious seafood lunch. The name of the trattoria is La Chiglia The temperature in Porto Venere today is 13 degrees. And today’s sunset time is 18:17.

I highly recommend eating at this trattoria. There’s no reason why the fresh seafood caught in this cove isn’t delicious. You can come on foot from the city center. The promenade along the sea is very nicely paved and very easy to walk. There are plenty of chairs and places to sit along the promenade.

You can rest assured that you can take a break anytime during your walk. You can enjoy a walk along this path while listening to the chirping of birds. This is a very well maintained walking path.

Portovenere lies at the southern end of a peninsula, which, breaking away from the jagged coastline of the Riviera di Levante, forming the western tip of the Gulf of La Spezia. At the end of this peninsula are three small islands: Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; only Palmaria Island,

Which lies directly opposite the village of Porto Venere beyond a narrow strait, is partially inhabited. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with almost no excess heat in summer and no freezing in winter. However, rainfall can be abundant, especially in autumn and spring, due to the orography of the Riviera di Levante.

I hope to see a beautiful sunset without clouds today. The island of Palmaria’s area over there Tino and the tiny Tinetto, lie further south. The harbor of Portovenere, although the smallest of Liguria, is always sold out in the summer season and also hosts many celebrities. Let’s walk.

This breakwater is famous for its beautiful viewpoints. The cupola of San Lorenzo Church can be seen just above the front, which is a very beautiful view. The clouds will clear and we will be able to see a beautiful sunset. Giacomo Bastreri Square

There is a gate at the end of this square that allows you to enter the town. A gate named Porta del Borgo came into view. Venture through the ancient Porta del Borgo gate and onto the narrow streets of Via Giovanni Capellini, where a tapestry of colorful facades and charming boutiques awaits.

You’ll discover the heart of Portovenere’s historic center, where every cobblestone tells a story and every corner beckons with the promise of adventure. The streets are connected by multiple steep stairs, creating a three-dimensional structure for the traffic of the people who live there,

Such as going up to the church or going down to the port. Spalianzani Square In mythology, the goddess Venus is said to have been born from the foam of the sea. Via Vittoria Even if you walk without looking at a map, you can come across famous tourist spots in this city.

Sometimes birds and cats may guide you along the way. This town has many stairs, so we recommend that you wear comfortable shoes when you come. The facade of the church came into view. The Romanesque church of St. Lawrence,

Erected in 1098 by the Genoese probably occupies the site of ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter. The church was damaged by a fire in 1340 and by the Aragonese attack in 1494, and was further restored in 1582. In order to be revived, styles gradually accumulated, and Gothic style probably mixed with Romanesque style.

If you look inside, you’ll probably understand that. The leading arch visible in the front is a typical design of the Gothic style, a feature not found in the Romanesque style. The marble from Carrara is probably used. It has an octagonal dome.

A characteristic of the Romanesque style is that there are few illuminated areas on the exterior walls to let in light, and the walls are thick. Perhaps more windows were added each time the building was repaired.

The interior is brighter than I expected from the Romanesque exterior, which is probably influenced by the Gothic style. It is definitely a church worth visiting. If you climb up these stairs, you will be able to see a nice view. Let’s climb up. A wall made of stone. Maybe there’s a castle nearby.

As expected, we arrived at the castle. The Doria Castle, an example of Genoese military architecture. The castle consists of two parts, a 15th Century upper section and a later (post-cannon) lower section. The lower section contains the Sala Ipostila, a hall built on the site of ancient Greek temples.

The upper section contains the Casa del Catellano, the home of the commander of the castle and sits above the Sala Ipostila. During the Napoleonic period after 1807, the Castle saw service as a political prison.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Porto Venere became the base of the Byzantine fleet in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea, but was destroyed by the Lombards in 643 AD. Later, it was a frequent target of Saracen raids. What you can see over there is The Church of St. Peter.

First indications of the existence of a castle date from 1113, and in 1161 the walls were erected. Porto Venere became a fiefdom of a family from Vezzano before passing to Republic of Genoa in the early 12th century.

In 1494, it suffered a devastating bombardment from the Aragonese fleet during their war with Genoa subsequently the old part of the town declined in importance, giving way to the development of the Borgo Nuovo (“New District”), which had existed from 1139 and is centred on the church of St. Peter.

The Church of St. Peter The Grotta dell’Arpaia (now collapsed), known as Byron’s Grotto The Church of St. Peter, consecrated in 1198. It was built over a pre-existing 5th-century Palaeo-Christian church, which had rectangular plan and semicircular apse.

The new part, from the 13th century, is marked externally by white and black stripes. and was restored between 1931 and 1935. This part was derived from an older body, which consists of the early church, but left the bell tower is based on the chapel left of the presbytery.

The original church dates from the 5th century, in Syriac type, with rectangular plan and semicircular apse. It lost the title of parish in the late 14th century, in favor of the Church of San Lorenzo. It was officiated by the secular clergy until 1798 Inside the Church

This place must have been the spiritual home of the people of this city throughout its long and eternal history spanning centuries. The beautiful afternoon sun is shining through the arch. What kind of beautiful sunset we can see from here today. You can reach the rooftop by climbing these narrow and steep stairs.

The clouds had disappeared completely. The conditions were perfect for seeing a beautiful sunset. Just wait until sunset. See the views from the beautiful Arcades of the Church. I will not explain any further from here. Just relax and watch the sunset. And please enjoy the epilogue of this video.

At the edge of the promontory lies San Pietro Church, a beacon of faith and resilience for over a millennium. Originally built in the 5th century atop the ruins of a temple, the church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Portovenere and its people.

The Latin name of the village (Veneris Portus) derives from the temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Ericina, which stood on the same place where the church of San Pietro stands today. The dedication to Venus was probably linked to the fact that, according to the myth, the goddess was born from the sea foam, abundant right below that promontory.
