1 Jahr Reisen | Alle Kosten & Route | Mittel – & Südamerika
How much does it cost to travel for a year? This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions. We would definitely describe ourselves as low budget and by the end of the video you will understand why. In Leipzig we quit our jobs as social workers, gave up our apartment and
Sold and gave away almost everything we owned in order to set off into the wide world on March 1st, 2023. We didn’t have a fixed plan, just that we wanted to travel slowly and we now combine
Volunteer work with house sitting on our trip around the world, so that we can not only save on accommodation, but also immerse ourselves deeply in the culture. Otherwise, we always look for the cheapest option when traveling,
For example always accommodation with a kitchen. If we don’t try the local food at small street stalls, we only cook ourselves and that saves us a lot of money. And otherwise, even if we travel cheaply, we don’t miss any highlight in the countries.
We may not be rich in money, but we are rich in time. So far we have only been traveling in Latin America. We wrote down our expenses every day and can therefore say how much money we spent. And we are now sharing this knowledge with you, have fun Argentina was the first country on our world trip and we never thought we would stay there for over three months. This country is huge and is the eighth largest country in the world. Since we only traveled by public transport, we were able to
Get to know the enormous dimensions of this country very well by taking hours of bus travel. The warmth of the people we were able to spend time with is just as big as the country. In Argentina we were involved in many different projects:
We helped out at a German language camp, worked on a farm in Patagonia, learned everything about making good wine at a winery near Mendoza, were able to learn more about hydroponics from friends in Cordoba, So we learned about growing plants without soil, and finally we worked near the world-famous Iguazú Falls
In a nature reserve. Of the three and a half months we were in Argentina, we were involved in projects for two and a half months. We got to know the Argentine culture intensively through the many exciting and warm encounters and also
Saved a lot as a result. We stayed in Argentina for a total of 110 days and spent €1,988.40. That’s a total of €18.07 per day and then we’re €9.03 per day per person. We don’t have much to say about Paraguay. We
Briefly drove over from Argentina for a project. During the volunteer project we learned a lot about permaculture, agriculture and self-sufficiency. We were only there for 6 days and only paid €40 for our entire stay in Paraguay, which totals €6.66 per day or €3.33 per day and per person.
We went to Chile to experience the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. We have never been able to experience a landscape like this before in our lives – just WOW. Everything we experienced there were highlights for us.
We took a tour to the Los Géiseres del Tatio, the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and the third largest in the world. We rode our bikes through the countryside to Valle de la Luna and admired the breathtaking
Views over the entire Pukará de Quitor area. We were only in Chile for three days, but it didn’t do our wallet any good. During this time we spent a total of €318.47. That’s a total of €106.15 per day or €53.07 per day and per person.
We fell in love in Bolivia. The country has so much to offer culturally and scenically and the people there have been so kind and warm to us. We definitely won’t be in Bolivia for the last time.
Our journey through Bolivia began with the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world. You can’t put this dimension of space, desert and salt into words. It is an experience that cannot be described. After these impressions we went further inland, to a small,
Sleepy town, where we supported a cultural center and learned more about the history, were able to experience the culture and politics of the country. Our last project in Bolivia took us to the Bolivian rainforest. Near the town of Samaipata, we helped a family
In a nature conservation project and enjoyed the special atmosphere of the place and the peace of the surroundings. The capital La Paz was loud, bustling and at the same time totally impressive. There is a lot to experience culturally there. We attended the Lucha Libre Cholita wrestling there. Strong women and pure
Entertainment on 16 square meters. La Paz also has the largest open-air market in all of South America. The entire area around La Paz is perfect for all kinds of excursions. We spent our wedding day on the most dangerous road in the world, the so-called
Death Road. We rode our mountain bikes along the narrow, unpaved road, full of adrenaline. We ended our time in Bolivia by arriving at Lake Titicaca, where we spent the night on Isla del Sol and were able to experience the annual blessing of cars in the port town of Copacabana.
We were traveling in Bolivia for 46 days and spent €111.82 during this time. That’s €21.99 per day, so we’re €10.99 per day and per person. Peru understands tourism. The country is so rich in culture, history and Peruvian cuisine
Is a revelation. Just like in Bolivia, we would have liked to have had more time in Peru. In Peru we worked for three weeks in a cevicheria in Cusco and that is how we found our Peruvian family. The time was fantastic because we not only worked together in the restaurant,
But were also integrated into family life. We went out to eat together, danced, watched our cousin become a father, cooked, drank and sang together to Modern Talking. We also watched the family child learn to walk and take its first steps before our eyes.
It was perfect. Cusco and the entire surrounding area offer countless excursion destinations. We visited many Inca ruins and also fulfilled our childhood dream: visiting Machu Picchu – wow. After Cusco we continued north. We saw the Nazka Lines, were at the desert oasis of Huacachina and experienced the trembling Lima.
In Oxapampa we had our first house sitting experience, which unfortunately was a complete failure. On the way back to Lima we were woken up in the middle of the night by a bus fire and were the last passengers to escape from the bus past the flames. With this shock in our bones
And a little smoke inhalation, we recovered and our lungs in the mountains of Huaraz. There we experienced our most beautiful hike in all of South America to Laguna 69. After a few days we continued north, where we followed in the footsteps of the Chimú culture in Trujillo before
Ending our stay in this country on the beaches of Mancorá. We were in Peru for 56 days and spent €1242.43 during this time. That’s a total of €22.18 per day or €11.9 per day and per person. The country of Ecuador left us with its scars, but the first days in
Ecuador were great. Compared to its neighboring countries, Ecuador is very small. You can travel from the Pacific, over the Andes to the Amazon region within a day and that’s crazy. Unfortunately, after a few days in Ecuador, we were completely robbed on the bus, so
We lost our laptop, camera, drone, memory cards, cell phone, microphone – everything. What was particularly bad was the loss of our captured memories, photos and videos because we didn’t have a cloud. Luckily we had house sitting in Quito, so we managed to process what we had experienced there. Family,
Friends and the travel community also helped us deal with the pain and loss with a fundraising campaign and words of support. vVelen thank you again at this point. We were in Ecuador for 34 days and spent €792.46 during this time.
That’s a total of €23.30 per day or €11.65 per day and per person. Because of our experiences in Ecuador, Colombia was not a good star for us. From Quito we went very quickly to Medellin because there was a house sitting waiting for us there. We stayed there
Three weeks and were able to get to know the city very well. There we renovated a school in Comuna 13, which was once the most dangerous district in the city, and experienced hip hop culture on the streets. We celebrated Anni’s birthday in the botanical garden and explored the beautiful
Surroundings of the place. After the vibrant city of Medellin, we were drawn to nature and drove to the rural areas of Colombia’s coffee culture. We fell in love with the little town of Jardín because of its relaxation and the smell of coffee in the air. Shortly afterwards we went to
Salento, where we marveled at the tallest palm trees in the world in the Cocora Valley. If you don’t love palm trees by then , you definitely will afterward. We then drove back to Jardín for a workaway project and celebrated Christmas near Medellin before
Heading to the airport shortly afterwards and thus to Cuba. We were in Colombia for a total of 45 days and spent €1,144.39 during this time. Together that’s €25.43 per day, so we’re €12.71 per day and per person. Cuba was our first travel destination, which we visited purely for tourism. Unfortunately, we did
N’t know beforehand that cheap backpacking and Cuba don’t go well together. At the beginning we had something like a culture shock, which we couldn’t understand because we had already been traveling for 10 months at that point. The circumstances and life there were absolutely different than we
Had previously experienced in all of South America. After a while we managed to understand Cuba and get involved with the country, so that in the end we were able to enjoy it a lot. We smoked cigars, drank rum and experienced the delights of Havana. In Cuba we explored
The underwater world in the Caribbean Sea for the first time on our world trip and enjoyed palm trees, beaches and warm temperatures. We really liked the colorful colonial city of Trinidad and loved exploring the surrounding area and getting to know the culture. We ended our trip through Cuba
With our absolute highlight: the town of Viñales. We hiked to monoliths, marveled at murals, saw the tobacco plants flourishing in the fields and walked through caves. We spent a total of 27 days in Cuba and spent €808.24 during this time.
This makes Cuba our most expensive travel destination to date at €29.93 per day combined or €14.96 per day and per person. From Cuba we went to Panama and the contrast couldn’t have been greater. We have never seen a city like Panama City before. Skyscrapers right on the sea and
Shopping malls of incomprehensible proportions. The absolute opposite of everything Cuba has. We enjoyed shopping in supermarkets again and finding good, fresh food at local fruit and vegetable markets. Panama City has a lot more to offer besides the capital city feeling . A great beach promenade where raccoons wait for you in the evening,
The tropical Metropolitan Natural Park with carnivores, of course the legendary Panama Canal and the historic city center. Our highlight in Panama City was visiting the carnival. From the capital we went on to the cozy
Town of El Valle de Antón, as we will be house sitting here until mid-March. In El Valle we particularly enjoy the tranquility of nature and an exciting fact about this place: it is one of the largest habitable
Volcanic craters in the world. In the 39 days that we have been in Panama we have spent a total of €867.69. Together that’s €22.14 per day, so we’re €11.12 per day and per person. And now we come to the total for a year of traveling around the world. Our trip, a year
Through Latin America, has cost us €8,174 so far, but these are shared expenses. So that’s €4,087 per person for this one year and this number really includes all of our expenses on site. This means accommodation, food, transport, right down to the SIM card
In the phone. We have previously excluded flights and insurance from the number, but we are now adding them. So far we have flown a total of three times. Once from Germany to Buenos Aires, then the second time from Colombia to Cuba and the third time from Cuba to Panama.
This has cost us a total of €1,844.81 so far. Our travel health insurance costs us €107.87 per month for two people, so we have both paid €1294.08 for it so far. Adding it all together results in a proud sum of €11,312.89. For both of us together. So that’s €5,656.44
Per person for a year’s travel, which means all together . That means on average we spent a total of €30.99 every day, which means €15.49 per day and per person for a year of travel. That was our total cost for our first
Year of traveling around the world. What do you think about that? Feel free to write it in the comments and if you liked the video, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel.
