Even after the Mikawa Ikko Ikki made peace with Ieyasu, Tadanao Sakai was in conflict with Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the end, he seems to have lost the battle and fled to Suruga.
Yasutaka Osuka, who built Yokosuka Castle, served Tadanao Sakai. When Tadahisa Sakai started a rebellion, Yasutaka Osuga and Yasumasa Sakakibara stopped following Tadahisa Sakai and started serving Tokugawa Ieyasu. When you think of the task force under Ieyasu’s direct control, you think of Umawari, but apart from Umawari, there was also a vanguard role. Yasutaka Osuka played an active role as a Hatamoto Sensuke. His accomplishments were great, and he later came to call himself “Matsudaira.”
He will be active in the attack on Takatenjin Castle. Takatenjin Castle was originally the Tokugawa family’s base of control over Totomi.
It is a strategic location where it was said that “those who control Takatenjin will control Enshu.” It was a famous and impregnable castle that even Takeda Shingen of Kai was unable to capture.
Katsuyori Takeda made a name for himself as a warrior by capturing Takatenjin Castle, which his father, Takeda Shingen, had failed to capture. Yasutaka Osuga occupied Takatenjin Castle as a Tokugawa side, but surrendered the castle to Katsuyori Takeda.
Takeda Katsuyori showed generosity and allowed the castle soldiers to return to Tokugawa, and Osuga Yasutaka returned to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu places Yasutaka Osuga on the front line to take back Takatenjin Castle, which was taken by Katsuyori Takeda.
He gave Mabuzuka Castle to Yasutaka Osuga. However, they find an even better location to attack Takatenjin Castle. And they built a castle in that place. That place is Yokosuka Castle. The castle was built in 1578. Tokugawa Ieyasu chose to attack the impregnable Takatenjin Castle by attacking it with supplies.
The plan was to build a number of attached castles around Takatenjin Castle and starve the soldiers to death by cutting off supplies to Takatenjin Castle. It is summarized as the “Takatenjin Six Forts”, but Yokosuka Castle is not included in this list.
1581. Finally, we will conquer Takatenjin Castle. The Takatenjin Six Forts will be abandoned. Takatenjin Castle, which fell, was also abandoned.
For this reason, Yokosuka Castle remained as a control base in the southern part of Totomi. The main enclosure of Yokosuka Castle in its early stages is thought to be the Honmaru and Mt. Matsuo.
It seems that by the mid-early modern period of the Tokugawa period, the Ninomaru and Nishi-Kuruwa portions of the castle were expanded and took on their current form. In addition, the sea seems to have penetrated deep into the castle area until the mid-early modern period. There was Yokosuka Minato in the inlet.
As a result, the castle town prospered as a key point for maritime transportation. Later, Irie was blocked due to a major earthquake, and the function of the port was transferred to Fukuda Minato.
Yokosuka Castle is a unique castle. There was usually only one main gate, but there were two on the east and west sides. Also, stone walls are made using round river stones called tamaishizumi. Although it doesn’t exist now, there used to be a three-story, four-story castle tower.

高天神城は元々徳川家の遠江支配の拠点でした。「高天神を制する者は遠州を制する」といわれた要衝です。難攻不落の名城で甲斐の武田信玄も攻略できないお城でした。武田勝頼は父である武田信玄が落とせなかった高天神城を落城させ、武名を揚げます。
家康は武田勝頼に奪われた高天神城を取り戻すために、横須賀城を築きました。
