High-quality cultural assets are scattered throughout this place, exciting the hearts of travelers who are interested in history and culture. Today, we introduce 10 wonderful travel destinations in Nonsan.
Before we begin, if you subscribe to ‘Travel Brochure’, you can receive various travel information, so please ‘Subscribe’, ‘Like’, and ‘Alarm’ right now. Also, signing up for ‘Channel Membership’ will be a great help in producing good videos. Then let’s begin. ‘Tapjeongho’, created by the flow of valley water originating from Mt. Daedunsan,
Is the second largest lake in Chungcheongnam-do and is famous for its clear water. Here at Tapjeong Lake, Asia’s longest suspension bridge over the lake opened in 2021, and is already gaining popularity, with a total number of visitors exceeding 2 million. When you stand on the suspension bridge that crosses the vast Tapjeong Lake,
You will feel the freedom of walking in the sky due to the refreshing openness. A waterside ecological park has been created around the lake, and the walking trails are beautifully designed, making it a great place for a light outing. There is also a road that circles Tapjeong Lake,
Making it a popular driving course. At the foot of Banyasan Mountain in Gwanchok-dong, Nonsan-si, there is ‘Gwanchoksa’, a temple famous for ‘Eunjin Maitreya’. Gwanchoksa Temple is a temple that was founded by the monk ‘Hyemyeong’ under the royal order in 968 AD, the 19th year of King Gwangjong of Goryeo.
Upon entering the temple grounds, you will be amazed by the benevolent smile of the huge Maitreya Buddha standing in the large yard. National Treasure No. 323, ‘Stone Maitreya Bodhisattva Statue’, better known to us as ‘Eunjin Maitreya’, is the largest stone Buddha statue in Korea at 18m in height.
‘Eunjin Maitreya’ is a work of art with wide, clear features and an unconventional and bold aesthetic sense, and it shows the most original and highly complete beauty among Korean Buddhist statues. The name of the temple, ‘Gwanchoksa’, is said to have been given after a famous Chinese monk named ‘Jian’
Saw the stone statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva and said, “Maitreya shines as if looking at a candle.” In front of Maitreya Bodhisattva, Treasure No. 232, ‘Stone Lantern’, is located, but it is unfortunate that it is not possible to view because it is under renovation until May of this year. When traveling to Nonsan,
You will come across many beautiful and historic temples. In Gayagok-myeon, Nonsan-si, there is a very unique temple called ‘Banyasa’, famous for its cave temple. As you enter the grounds, the first thing that catches your eye is the main temple, proudly located in front of a large rock cliff.
If you go to the back of the main hall, there are stairs leading down to the cave temple. Banyasa Temple was built into a temple using an abandoned limestone mine. The length of the mine is said to be as much as 20km.
The cave temple here is cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and the colorful lighting makes it feel unique and unique. Next to the cave temple is a huge rock canyon. This place became famous as a photo spot as word of mouth spread
That it could capture a wonderful view of the cave, but access is often restricted due to the risk of falling rocks. At the foot of Noseongsan Mountain in the north of Nonsan City, there is a house of a nobleman that is over 300 years old, called ‘Myeongjae Gotaek’.
This old house was built in 1709 by ‘Myeongjae Yun Jeung’, a scholar during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty. The structure is simple and the layout is frugal yet shows a hint of elegance. There is a large outdoor yard in front of the house,
And a garden is created with an artificial pond and a circular island in front of it. More than hundreds of jars are neatly placed next to the old house, and the old zelkova trees on the hill seem to surround them. The beauty of traditional Korean hanok, neither too much nor too little,
Is fully captured in ‘Myeongjae Gotaek’. Right next to ‘Myeongjae Old House’ is ‘Noseonghyanggyo’, which has been designated as a Chungcheongnam-do monument, so you can stop by there. Hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the government to hold ancestral rites to Confucius and various saints and to educate and enlighten local residents.
About 200m east of ‘Myeongjae Old House’ is ‘Noseong Gwollisa’. ‘Gwollisa’ is a shrine that enshrines the portrait of Confucius, and its name comes from ‘Gwol-ri’, the village where Confucius was born and raised. During the Joseon Dynasty, there were ‘Gwollisa’ in four locations across the country,
But currently only these remain in Osan-si, Gyeonggi-do and here. In Yeonsan-myeon, Nonsan-si, there is ‘Donam Seowon’, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Donam Seowon is the headquarters of ‘Kiho Confucianism,’ which formed the mainstream of Neo-Confucianism in the late Joseon Dynasty, and was built to inherit the academic achievements
Of ‘Sagye Kim Jang-saeng.’ During the reign of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty, Heungseon Daewongun abolished all but 47 places across the country, but in Nonsan, only ‘Donam Seowon’ and ‘Nogang Seowon’ remained without being abolished. Within the Seowon, there are cultural assets such as ‘Eungdo-dang’, which has been designated as a treasure,
And ‘Wonjeongbi’, which describes the background of the Seowon’s establishment. When you reach the foot of the mountain along the quiet ‘Jungsan-gil’, you will find ‘Ssanggyesa Temple’, built in the early Goryeo Dynasty. As you enter the grounds, what stands out the most is the main hall,
Which has been designated as National Treasure No. 408. Daeungjeon Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple, built in the late Joseon Dynasty, is famous for its beautiful flower-patterned muntins, and the delicate and elaborate workmanship of six different patterns, including lotus and peony flowers, is exquisite.
The floral pattern here is considered a representative masterpiece of 18th-century Buddhist architecture, along with the floral pattern at Buan’s ‘Naesosa Temple.’ Inside the main hall, the ‘Sakyamuni Buddha Three Seated Statues’, designated as a treasure, are enshrined, so don’t miss out and take a look around.
‘Gaetaesa Temple’ is the first temple built by Wang Geon, King Taejo of Goryeo, in 940 AD, the 23rd year of King Taejo’s reign, after he completely defeated the forces of Later Baekje. Within Geungnakdaebojeon Hall, the ‘Stone Buddha Triad’, designated as Treasure No. 219, is enshrined.
The Triad Stone Buddha at Gaetaesa Temple is considered a representative stone Buddha from the Goryeo Dynasty with its thick carving lines, and you can feel the spirit of a warrior with a long body and a dignified spirit. The portrait of King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty is enshrined in ‘Eojinjeon’.
This was a temple that shared the rise and fall of Goryeo, where prayers were offered whenever the country was in danger. Not far from ‘Hwangsanbeol’, Baekje’s last battlefield, lies Baekje’s famous general ‘General Gyebaek’, who died a brave death with 5,000 soldiers. Here, there is ‘Chungjangsa Temple’,
A shrine that enshrines the memorial tablet and portrait of General Gyebaek, and General Gyebaek’s tomb is located on the hill on the right. The view of Tapjeong Lake from the statue of General Gyebaek is truly peaceful. Today, we introduced you to some great travel destinations in Nonsan,
Which has a long history and various cultural relics. Nonsan, which is dotted with high-quality cultural assets, is a truly wonderful travel destination that always excites the heart.
