[4K] Lower Manhattan in Winter: New York City Walking Tour

Hello everyone Alexander from City Gazing here and today I will take you on a walk through the lower Manhattan it’s Saturday almost 2 PM, it’s February 17th, and it’s very cold it’s just above freezing so I’m wearing gloves and you see some snow because we had a little snowfall in the morning today

I didn’t have any specific route planned for this walk so I’ll take you just somewhere I started here at the south of Houston Street or as you all know this neighborhood is SoHo and the neighbourhood to the north of Houston Street is called NoHo If you’ve seen my morning walk

Here at the Soho from a week ago you would see that it was much less crowded this week at this time 2PM it’s very busy I’m trying to get ahead of the crowds just for you to see something besides the crowds Lower Manhattan is the part of the city where New York started

And where the Midtown now is that was considered just forests and bushes and no one would wanna go there do you remember I was telling you about the people here and how they dress that you cannot know what’s the weather outside based on the outfit people wear

I will not stay at the Broadway for the entirety of the trip I’ll go some side streets show you some things too but for now we’ll walk a couple more blocks here you see that’s everything that’s left after the snow that we had in the morning

You can see all these cast iron buildings everywhere here in Soho let’s turn to the right here I’ll go this way for a little bit you can see how the salt machine works should be a freezing temperature later in the day so that’s why they’re putting salt on the roads and there’s always

A construction somewhere in New York there is a sun outside I’m surprised because the forecast said that it will be cloudy the whole day and now we are on the West Broadway street it’s not the Broadway, the regular one, it’s not one so be careful when you’re choosing the address

It’s not too far but still different street you could see one World Tradee Center in the back and the place where I’m heading to is very popular and you seen that in a movie if you are probably older than 20 but maybe they do feature that’s in remake movies too

And what the place is you’ll see in a few minutes you can see all the trash outside and people in the comments section they were telling me that “New York is bad, New York is trash” why do you film something, and why I’m hiding something and I said that I’m not hiding anything

I’m not even editing my videos so this what you see this what I see it is how it is so here it is, this is the place I’ll come a little bit closer for you to see the sign and this what they have on the ground so that was from the Ghostbusters movie

I haven’t seen the latest part of it but I really enjoyed the original one and I like this building with a strange form as far as I remember that it was made by some Dutch architect let me see if I can film it from here

And here is an entrance to the subway station it’s Franklin Street subway station and we will not go this way you see there is much more snow where the soil is but where the pavement is and roads there is no snow and the neighbourhood we are in right now is called Tribeca

It’s very quiet, no tourists usually maybe except for the Ghostbusters fire station You can see all this gorgeous architecture and you can tell that it was built very long time ago and as for One World Trade Centre it’s still the highest building in New York City it’s an office building mainly

You can go to the observation deck there it’s good but Empire State Building is better let’s go this way for a few minutes I haven’t been to the Brooklyn Bridge after they removed all the traders from there so wanna see how it looks like we’ll take a peek there

If there are not a lot of people there oh I want to show you one building here there is a building that doesn’t have any windows no one knows what’s going on in there like maybe someone knows but I don’t know I just read that it’s a federal building

And was built specifically this way to protect all the secrets let me show it to you from here you see it’s big but they don’t have any windows there here on the side you can see how massive it is they have at&t sign on the door

I don’t think that it’s the main office of at&t another beautiful building here with these arches on the windows let me know down in the comments what is the format that works best for you is it just silent videos without any comments is it just the comments

That I might have and I’m walking on the streets and not some historical facts or any other information just what I see or maybe your favorite is when I’m telling you the history of the place the story behind it and some other interesting things

This will help me to understand what the audience likes here is some federal building but they got windows here and the building you already see that’s United States Court House you probably seen it in multiple multiple movies about New York when there is anything happening here they’re showing you either this building

Or the other one to the left side I’ll show it to you in a second this one that’s Supreme Court I’ll cross the street and I’ll show it to you closer you can see the text on the top that says the true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of the good government

By the way I’m listening to you and I’m not filming a lot of videos during the night because you said that you cannot see anything but because of work I cannot film all the videos during the day sorry about that so that’s not brooklyn bridge technically that’s why they can sell something here

Here you can see the bike lane it was not there until like few years ago bikes were riding right here where all the people are walking and that was crazy people were mad I mean the people who walk here, bikers were mad because not the best experience you can get

And then they have divided this into two lanes so they basically took one of the car lanes and put a bike lane there instead no traders at all I will not be going all the way there I just wanted to see for myself that there is no one

And no one is breaking the law this car just standing here so yeah you can see it’s empty and now much more space for people to walk I’m happy about that I’ll be heading back you can see there is water everywhere sometimes I’m glad that you cannot get the smell through the video

Because all these food trucks here they smell really bad I would not recommend to get something here and this building here that’s New York City Hall I don’t know I haven’t been there insideб had no need and I’m not even sure that you can enter as a regular person

I’ll show it to you from another angle that’s how it looks like I see where all the traders are now I like the view here all the snow you can see chains on the tires will hop in inside for a second I wish there was snow like this everywhere in New York

Not just in parks so yeah you cannot go any further than that but that’s another angle for you look at this cute snowman trees are perfect especially pines or that’s a Christmas tree, I don’t know I don’t know if you can actually see it but all these gorgeous details on this building

Just beautiful this building is called Woolworth Building and it was designated as historical landmark at some point but you cannot enter it I can only imagine how beautiful it is inside Saint Paul’s Chapel right here and we are back at the Broadway I have a video dedicated to Broadway Street

Where you can learn all the interesting things about it and it’s one of the longest streets you can see there is a Fulton Street subway station that hosts a ton of different branches of the subway and back there you can see the Oculus few videos ago I showed you the Inwood neighborhood

Which is the highest point on Manhattan and this time I’ll show you the lowest point of Manhattan we’ll pass charging bull soon we’ll see how big the line is there and the charging bull itself has an interesting story it was installed there illegally by the artist

And it was planned to install it during the night when there is no patrol cars there and they did it I don’t remember all the small details but somehow they installed it and everyone on Wall Street was mad because it’s there and soon after they removed it from there

And they were storing it somewhere and few months or years after, they put it back because it’s a major attraction now everyone wants to take a picture there and I don’t remember all the legal details but they cannot do anything about it right now they cannot remove it

Sorry I was not prepared for this one that’s just what I remember from the top of my head and that’s Trinity Church and this is the legendary Wall Street right here I will not be going there probably I’ll make a separate video on that this video is already too long

And I’ll gather some facts and will do my research and we’ll get back there to tell you more details and this is an American Express company I hope that they will remove this scaffolding here soon cause it’s too dark it’s 2:30 PM and it shouldn’t be that dark

And here is the amount of people who want to take a picture with a bull you’ll see a line from this side, from the head side they will have another line from the backside which is even more shiny and the line here is much bigger and another building here

This is National Museum of the American Indian I haven’t been there but that’s on my list must be very good and this building here it’s One Broadway so this is the very beginning of the Broadway all these people here they want you to go to the ferry or the statue of Liberty

But you shouldn’t buy tickets from them buy at the official website there’s only one ferry, one company that heads to the statue of liberty and the Ellis Island that’s a cool fence alright everything looks like closed in here I don’t know what will be the right way for me to enter there

So here is the place where you can buy tickets to the Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty it’s a Castle Clinton here I’m here for a second just to show you how this building looks like love to meet them I’ll show it to you so you can take a screenshot

Of the video and read more and I’ll be heading a little bit further I want to see if there is an end to this fence if I can show you statue of Liberty or not and that will be my last point of interest for today all these people are from the boats

Yeah I cannot go that way and it’s bad, so probably that’s the best view I can give you of the Statue of liberty I don’t even know if you can see it way back I’m upset that there is a construction there and I can’t show it to you better

But I will show you a way to see the statue of Liberty for free give me one second we’ll head this way so the way you can take a look at the Statue of Liberty for free you can get a Staten Island ferry it’s right here in the building as you can see

I think it’s like every 30 minutes you can go take this orange boat to the Staten Island and then go back you will not be too close to the statue of Liberty but you will see it and you’ll have much better view than from the lower point of Manhattan

Especially now with the construction there but if you’re going to buy a ticket to see the statue of Liberty please visit Ellis Island too for me it was much more interesting much more exciting to learn the history of the place how the immigrants arrived and it just more fascinating

Do not spend a ton of time at the statue of Liberty so this is the entrance to the ferry here you can see the sign that says Staten Island Ferry and here you can take a bus to go somewhere uptown so I think this is it for today thanks for watching
