YUZAWA TRAVEL GUIDE 🚠 | Things to do in Yuzawa + KIYOTSU GORGE and the Tunnel of Light 🌿✨

[Music] it’s a bit of a rainy morning here  as you can see but we’re not letting that   keep us indoors going on a little  hike so we’re going to be showing   you lots of different baths this is the  first wonderful Onsen foot bath right

Out here in the middle of the Yuzawa Town  soba for lunch friends and I’m very happy   about it some seaweed on top these are  cold noodles a wonderful dish to enjoy   in the [Music] summertime we have entered the  tunnel of light there is some very spooky music

Playing this next work of art is also a  toilet you can see them they can’t see you see You We are AB All Aboard it goes at set time so   every 20 minutes yeah we were  lucky we only had to wait 5 [Music] minutes [Music] [Music] well friends first attraction here in  Yuzawa we decided to take the Yuzawa Kogen ropeway   up the mountain for some epic views yeah we  figured it looks like we’ve got some rain in   the schedule so yes let’s take advantage  of that one non rainy afternoon and head

Up yeah and this is a beautiful spot there’s  also a Yuzawa Kogen Botanical Alpine Garden   that I’m hoping to visit yes and one thing we  noticed immediately as soon as we reached the   Mountaintop the temperature is so much cooler  here oh thank you thank any I mean I’m just so

So unbelievably thankful for that you know  it is late September here in Japan but the   temperatures remind me of back home maybe  in early August so I’m loving the cooler   temperature is up here it’s going to allow us  to enjoy the walk a little bit more and yeah

It’s just a completely different environment  up here it’s so green it’s so spacious that   that fresh Mountain Air what’s not the lake huh  exactly all hills are alive with the sound of music right why why why aren’t you thinking B hey  so what are you doing you’re in the wrong career

You should def definitely have a singing career  that was totally in tune that was definitely in   tune what do you think subtropical Sound of Music  yeah definitely subtropical it’s a little bit   Lusher over here and not quite the the the size  of trees either or the size of mountain peaks

They the mountain peaks either but you know what  this is nice this is the start of our mountainous   Adventures here in Japan and I couldn’t be happier  so we are now checking out the Alpine Garden lots

Of photo ops along the way y are you cooperating  with the with your photographic you got the best   photo shoot ever and you got to review it and  critique and ask for another one on top of that

So you know what Sam does when he takes photos of  people he’ll be like yeah yeah and then you look   at the photos and your eyes are clo Landscapes  you’re great people you’re like whatever yeah   I’m a lot of people photographer that’s true I  I prefer candid portraits CED portrait to POS

Portrait there you go [Music] [Applause] [Music]  [Applause] [Music] n thoughts thoughts I love it   out here if nothing else is the temperature I  love it is a beautiful garden though and there   aren’t too many people here at the moment so  I actually noticed more people doing kind of

Like Comfort touristy things they were eating at  the restaurants and just hanging out by there’s   a little foot spa we decided to have a bit  more Adventure and walk down here and we’ve   been rewarded so we’re going to be showing you  lots of different baths during during our time

Here in Yuzawa starting right now with a hand  bath Samuel can you demonstrate the hand bath   I can try but I’ve never done a hand bath before  I’ve done foot baths this is the first this is

The first so let me take off my camera bathe the  hands it doesn’t say sink I’m going to take off my   watch oh come on that’s a bit that’s Overkill not  Overkill here the hands are going to have first

Ooh it’s so warm so warm it’s like hot water as  you’d imagine oh it feels so good ready for the   Polar Plunge okay Polar Plunge is definitely not  the Polar Plunge the hot plunge hand bag oh that’s

So nice and warm okay oh that feels great I love  it and from here we’re going to continue to the   foot path yeah I’m I’m more looking forward to  that but this is my first hand not bad wow just

Enjoying a little afternoon stroll through yuzawa  on our way to the foot bath wait the foot bath we   passed that on that was on another road wasn’t it  yeah that’s down here I believe down here oh oh no

It’s right there it’s right there wow oh is this  another one no that’s the one we’re just we’re   just so disoriented where is the paath we we we  do turn left at some point oh yeah I remember I

Remember the cake liquor Place cake liquor cake  liquor foot bath you’re not going to keep that gosh oo all righty are you ready for this  I’m ready for a dippy dooo a dippy doo dah   dippy doo dah oh that’s wonderful and you know  what it feels 10 times better after going for

A hike like we did your feet are kind of  swollen a little bit sore and to be able   to dip them into this wonderful onen foot bath  right out here in the middle of the town this

Would be even better in my opinion on a on a  cooler day if it was like 10° something like   that you how nice that would feel warm up in  the public bath yeah this just feels wonderful

I’m going to stay here for a while all right  wow I’ve got a real farmer’s tan well no like   a sandal tan going on hey oh yeah ooh that is hot  yeah you did wow that that burns a little [Music]

Bit all righty guys so we’re pretty tired from  today’s activities we’re also feeling really   hungry so we couldn’t find the restaurant that was  open in the middle of the afternoon it’s probably   like 4:00 4:30 right now and we’re having dinner  so we decided to walk over to the train station

And we found a restaurant serving set lunches so  we’re going to show you what we got everything   looks so good I’m hungry after all the hiking for  sure and what did you order so I got something

That is the equivalent of like a normally you we  get this it’s called the katsudon which is pork   but this is the chicken version so it’s basically  it’s got chicken with egg and a sauce and rice

Underneath and onions looks great and it came with  a a bowl of miso sure did so should I try that yes M very good super tender chicken I  actually normally not a huge fan of egg   but in this scenario it’s pretty good and  just so hungry that this tastes wonderful

To me yeah you know we’ve been having a lot of  noodles lately so some something with the rice   mix it up is very very welcome Y and then I got  I also got no you got chicken I got a pork dish

I got Ginger pork really good so it’s thin  little strips of pork with onion solid is   it on a bed of salad I haven’t even noticed  see that from here also a bowl of rice so I’m

Going to mix that up if I can manage to use  these Chopsticks I have more experience than   what it looks like right now my gosh nice  and gingery I can’t wait I’m going to I’m   going to steal a piece from you that looks  looks really good I love Ginger me too Ginga

For the win a bowl of miso soup I love miso  I’m just having a daily now never get tired   of miso sometimes for breakfast yep all right  so good food here at the train station lots of [Music] options Good morning good morning from fluto Falls  it’s a bit of a rainy morning here as you   can see but we’re not letting that keep us  indoors going on a little hike exactly so   we’re experiencing a little hike within the  town There’s a waterfall area and we’ve got

Some really cool indoor activities to do on a  rainy day including eating drinking sake and   a special kind of msen that has a specific  ingredient all right so all of that coming   up but right now we’re going to kick our walk  off to the waterfall and it is surprisingly

Humid for a cloudy rainy day we are sweating  already um but it’s meant to be 30 minutes to   the falls from the train station and yeah let’s  go enjoy that all righty those Falls there that   is not what we’re after yeah folks just in case  you were thinking that’s some Main Attraction

No it is not we still have some more hiking to  do up the path we go up we go lead the [Music] way oh man what an awesome shot Here Wow well guys we made it to the falls as you  can see pretty cool pretty epic and I mean the   best thing we’re the only ones here no one else is  around and it kind of surprises me because it’s a

Super easy hike it takes less than 30 minutes from  the train station and I mean there is a little bit   of an incline but it’s not anything super steep  that’s you know like unmanageable I’d say this is

A fairly accessible hike and it’s not far at all  and like look at how beautiful and Lush and green   this place is like even on a cloudy day I think  it’s quite magical I think the mistiness and just

The the cloud coverage makes it even more special  what do you think how do you like The Falls it’s   amazing you think that you can get out here in  nature just a few minutes away from the Town

Center absolutely love it literally nobody is here  just us we have this whole place to ourselves it   just feels like this this town in the offseason  is definitely a bit of a Hidden Gem I’d [Music] [Music] say [Music] guys we found a real Gem of  place here just across from the train station

Traditional restaurant with traditional seating  they even have something cool there if you take   a look around here they have a traditional  sake bar you can sit down right by the bar   and order drinks that’s that’s a lot of tradition  in one place that look at the extensive menu but

What’s so cool about this place aside from the  setting is that they have great lunch sets so   we’ve ordered two different kinds I’m trying the  local one which is called maake maake temp Tempur

Noodles and I got and you got the tenzaru noodles  okay there we go so we both come with tempura and   apparently the Mitaki tempura is a special type  of niigata makaki mushrooms so it’s going to be   really interesting something unique and different  here in this cool little town in Japan SOA for

Lunch friends and I’m very happy about it you can  see the buckwheat noodles over here some seaweed   on top these are cold noodles a wonderful dish to  enjoy in the summer time so I’m just going to try

To lift some noodles and I’ve already prepared  my little sauce little bit of Wasabi mixed in   there and we’re just going to grab our noodles cul  dip them into the sauce and into the mouth they go scrumptious I’d love you to try your  tempura too please I already ate the best

One pumpkin oh it’s it’s gone pumpkin is gone  well there’s mushrooms these are like some   leafy greens this looks like a green pepper  and I also have eggplant so let’s try this   leaf and shrimp this is a different  sauce oh yeah for dipping the [Music] tempora

M I don’t know what I’m having but it’s nice  sometimes that’s the comment we have in Japan   I don’t know what we’re have but it’s ni yeah  yours is same same but different but different   so the difference is the tempura the Miaki  mushrooms and this is the local dish friends

Look how beautiful that looks this is I’m really  excited to try this wow it’s so big bup that in delicious like it oh wonderful tempura  coating and the mushrooms are just so so   spongy and actually juicy too juicy mushrooms  you heard it here I love that and guys this

Is a meal where the gifts keep on coming M  check out this and they even have this nice   little explanation sheet SOA U is a boiled  water from SOA noodles it is very nutritious   with delightful taste as a soup so pour some  on your bowl after eating the SOA all righty

Sounds good so we’re going to use that little  bowl so let’s take this okay and pour it into   here o look at that see the it’s the water that  the soba noodles were boiled in he that’s right

Nutritious and delicious want some too uh I’ll  I’ll finish up my soba and then I’ll do the same oh that’s nice and I had a little bit  of lingering Wasabi at the bottom of the   wall those got a bit of zest too that’s nice  poent so I believe that restaurant was called

Nakoya friends all great things unfortunately  come to an end that was a wonderful meal I   loved everything about it from the traditional  seating to the Ambiance inside the restaurant to   the Fantastic food to the extra service and the  price was also very affordable to it came to uh

2900 Yen and that included everything man that  place is good if I if we can find a way to go   back I’m pretty sure we will oh you’re already  planning your return meal that’s a good sign   maybe on the day we leave you know all righty  we are definitely satisfied that was wonderful

Wonderful food I’ll go out on the limb and say  that was one of the best meals if not the best   meal we’ve had in Japan it was just so good so  memorable everything loved about it everything

I love everything loved about it I mean I loved  everything about it let try that again our English   is starting to change here just the order of  words um but anyways now we’re walking over   to the train station because there are some  cool food and drink activities that we have

Planned for the afternoon I would have to say  this is one of the coolest train stations I’ve   ever been to there’s so much to do you could  actually probably spend a whole day in there yeah baby [Applause] So we’ve arrived at the train station I apologize  for the announcements but they just don’t stop   they keep going so got to speak over them  so we’re currently going to visit the Ichigo   Sak Museum bonan now if you watched our nigata  city video you saw that we went into the train

Station and they had little vending machines  where you could sample sake yeah they did so   here they have even more sake even more variety  so we’re going to be heading over there yeah I   think there’s about 20 more from what we we sced  it out I think there’s like maybe 132 or something

Like that so yeah we got options Gore we’re  probably going to try five different ones yes   let’s do so we’re going to bring you along get  some tokens and try some Sak let’s do it there   are all the varieties of Sak friends look at that  awesome photo that’s going to and here’s another

Signifier that you’ve found the right place Sak  man yeah it’s Sak man from neata Sak man can Sak   man can you can do it Sak man saki man can okay  so we got our little saki cup also this time

Around moderation we do not each need to have five  shops of Sak um we’re going to share five between   the two of us so we have five tokens we don’t  need to take a siest to this after pass out if

You have that so some really good advertising  here I like the sweet fruity ones and number   117 promises to be a fruity sake like a pear and  apple with smooth sweetness chakari ch ch zakari

Ch zakari cha zakari is it zakari we’re going to  try that that’s going to be number one okay cha zakari you want to have a little sip sure don’t  drink too much cuz it’s a fruity one the wifey

Likes the fruity ones ooh it is fruity it’s fruity  it’s not super sweet but it’s fruity it’s got   15% alcohol so I think you’ll like it but it’s  not the sweet sweet sweet ones that you really

Like that makes sense okay so it’s not it is not  syrup I am expecting but it does have the subtle   fruit flavors for sure did you agree you’re right  that is not syrup that is not honey it is fruity

I like it I would not say it’s a sweet finish no  look at this one 46% that’s that’s a bit mucho I   need to take a nappy after that one okay Sasa  sunde going for a lighter one with the hopes Audrey want to try first sure give us the

Verdict you’re going to like this one a bit more a   bit more y it’s not super sweet but it’s  definitely sweeter a bit more but not quite that’s an improvement it’s an improvement  so the the key thing is that has lower alcohol

Content i’ i’ I’ve think I’ve unlocked the  secret now doing this twice if you go for   the ones that have about 11% they tend to be  sweeter not always but most of the time we have   arrived at the plum wine section where realizing  I probably have been drinking plum wine that’s the

One you like so this is your favorite from last  time we’re going to have this at the end we’re   also going to try this one too this one’s 133%  this one might be one that you like we’ll find Out oh this one has Audrey’s name all over it  it’s so sweet it’s very Plum it’s got a sweet   Plum taste plumy try it turns out I’ve been  looking for plum wine not Sak this whole time

Audrey likes for Plum wines so now you know  you can come to the pukan and make it over to   the plum wine section yep Shu which I think is  probably Soju Korean and wine made in nigata you

Know what I’m I’m sorry I’m going to override  this I want I’m going to get some more coin   SU try the wine more coins have been acquired  yes friends I have never tried Japanese wine

Before so I’m very excited we did get some more  coins for that now I will say that all three of   the wine selections take up two coins how about  this one the red wolf Red Wolf looks like it won

An award oh but put your little Cup first oops  want to be and I have no idea pour wine into the   oh it’s going to be a red red wine I can’t wait  to try this so excited for this guys one and two

Oo wowers and I am my favorite drink is is wine  so I’m quite excited but you’re a malbeck kind of   guy so we’ll see what Japanese wine is like it’s  not very strong it’s very subtle it’s very subtle

Taste soft like like a Mero or even lighter it’s  even it’s even softer than Mero wow so distinct   and different I’ve never had anything quite like  it still trying to decide my thoughts I like it

I like it do I like it or I’m confused at the  moment you try that is different yeah it is not   the Argentine wine we are we are used to drinking  at this point I can say that I do prefer the the

Sakis and the plum wines but it was interesting  to try a Japanese red wine so we have acquired   two little desserts here at the market inside  the train station and we are having something   called Sasa Dango um I’m going to open this up  for you it’s wrapped in a Bamboo Leaf and it’s

Kind of like a like a Mochi it’s Dango so it’s  the the sticky glutenous rice made into a little   ball and it is filled with red bean paste now  when we were buying this there was a little bit

Of confusion because they’re speaking to me in  Japanese but basically you can get the filling   as a smooth red bean paste or you can get like  the textured Bean like you can actually see the

Bean and the lady was trying to explain this to  me and it took me a while to understand what she   was talking about also not that easy to unravel  huh look at that so look at the layers yeah it’s

Several layers of leaf o and it is sticky o  la oh look at that okay oh my oh my how am I   going to eat this well I guess I will just take a  bite right then so it is green from the mugart Y

Mugart it’s such a funny word it doesn’t sound  appetizing but I do like mugart and I’ve been   eating mugart uh Mochi kind of sounds like a  unpleasant rainy day oh it’s a mugart to me

Mugart it sounds like a worm in my bra sounds  like a worm what’s that it’s good a little bit   messy to eat yeah but nice and warm like they  were actually steaming this right in front of

Us it’s it’s just a really nice dessert very light  like all Japanese desserts not overly sweet and it   would go really nice with a cup of green tea if  you ask me there you go so I’m going to let you

Try that’s the verdict in he goes trying the Sasa  Dango M I love the texture that’s my favorite part   the texture it’s just mushy and just tasty yum  yummy he says yum yeah so if you want to try a

Little dessert here at the train station this is  one of the more traditional ones you’ll find here   and it’s kind of fun that you have to earn it  you know you got to unwrap it yeah and uh p a

Little bit effort to eat it tiny bit of effort  tiny bit yeah oh look at this the last little bits and now that we’ve had our our sweets  we’re going to go visit the on at the train

Station we’ve had our sweets and now it’s  time to show you just one more thing you   can do here at the train station this place is  amazing you can eat you can drink you can find   interesting souvenirs and you can go spend some  time in an onen now the unique feature that we

Haven’t talked about at this onen is that it has  zake in it wow I’ve never been to an on that has   sake and so this is different and interesting  in my opinion wow you look so tall Samuel do

[Music] I this is the symbol for the onen  it segregated to men and women and we can   see the hours here is open from 10:30 to  6:30 and it is the sake hot spring sake   hot spring this this what it might look  like all righty so it says the saki bath

Is prepared by adding a special saki to the  Natural Hot Springs of Ichigo yuzawa has low   alcohol cont low alcohol that’s really good  you don’t have to worry about getting drunk   in there and it cost 800 Yen 800 yen to go  all righty I’m going to try it good luck yes

[Music] byebye [Music] well my buddy here just  walked out of the onen my first sake onen so   you were enjoying a nice little moment of Peace  here with a drink and and an ice cream mhm nice

So that was really cool it’s one of the small onen  I’ve ever been to there was only seven showering   stations and a small to mediumsized onen with a  saki in it um it was really cool though I really

Enjoyed it and yeah you wouldn’t expect to have  this huge onon in a train station so just the   right size and just the right amount of time I  probably spent close to an hour there and it was

Very relaxing and always feel really good like  this is something when I used to live in South   Korea I would go to the what was called the Sala  or the gy jilong there at least once a week to

Rel locks and um I love doing that in Japan too I  hope we have a few more opportunities to do this   on our trip all righty so interview time how many  people were actually in there well at one point

There was it was full like six or seven and then  then everyone left and I was by myself so nice it   was like uh yeah it varied throughout the time  I was there it started off quiet got busy and

Was quiet again and could you smell the Saka in  the air or in the water the aroma of sck or think   that I that I could but that might have just been  my imagination you know wanting to I don’t know I

Can’t say for certain but yeah I enjoyed it I feel  relaxed and rejuvenated nice and now I got you a   drink this is called Koji LTE and it has amazaki  which apparently is a sweet drink made from

Fermented rice it’s very sweet and it I can’t oh  it has caramel do I say it has caramel yeah that’s   [Music] carel all righty good morning good morning  morning friends here we are in front of Ichigo

Yuzawa train station and also the bus terminal  here in the parking lot we are here bright and   early because we need to catch a bus at 7:15 a.m.  today we’re going to visit a Kiyotsu Gorge kotu   Gorge and the buses are not very frequent at  least this time of year they’re only running

Three times a day so this is the first one we can  catch and we thought you know what let’s get out   there bright and early so we’re up platform  number four waiting for the bus and get ready

To experience some beautiful landscapes today as  well as some art so can’t wait to show you [Music] That well friends we arrived we’re off the bus  once you get off the bus you want to start walking   up left back back in the direction you came from  maybe like a little block and then there’s going

To be a little entrance that leads you down  into the town so I guess my biggest tip if   you’re planning to do this day trip I would say go  to visitor information inside the train station in

Yuzawa they’ve got maps with photos of what the  route is going to be like they’re going to give   you a bus schedule and that’s where you’re going  to get most of your information because otherwise   the rest of the time you’re not going to really  be able to communicate with the bus drivers you’re

Going to be lost you’re going to be confused what  a beautiful journey through the mountains though   Serpentine you’re kind of just going left and  right and zigzagging and eventually where we’ve   got off is a small town first impressions are  the the houses look really neat they’re kind

Of big and the other thing I’ve noticed too is  that there’s some places some houses that have   like tiny little rice fields in the front so cute  it’s so cute so we’re really happy to be here also

The weather’s different from our town 30 minutes  away no sun out here much cooler and uh so far   enjoying it a lot and this is a little entrance  into the town this little road right here and

They’ve got like a picture of the Kiyotsu gorge  we’re heading to so yeah this is [Music] great Al righty friends so we have made it to the  entrance of the tunnel of light just behind   us however we are here a little bit early 15  more minutes before it opens yeah it opens at

8:30 so we’re here at like4 after 8 mhm now  knowing that information I would have taken   even more time to to photograph and take videos  of the walk here beautiful walk it’s a little bit

Different than what we expected right yeah so  I thought we were going to be on the side of a   highway to be honest I thought it was going to  be a scary walk but as you can see we’re just

Following this beautiful river that has little  like pockets of turquoise and we went through a   town and now like the actual Resort here at the  entrance of the tunnel there wasn’t a whole lot   of traffic but I will say this it has the the  rural effect that I noticed everywhere in the

World people drive very fast same in Canada too  and so be careful and make sure you stick to the   that white line stay on that other side so yeah  just going to enjoy the scenery a bit longer then

Until the ticketing Booth opens so admission  costs and a map we’re starting right here got   a long tunnel to walk and we have a strategy  friends we are going to be part of the first

Group that comes in and our plan is to hi tail it  to platform 4 for the most epic views and then we   can hit three two and one on the way back the  idea is want to beat the crowds we want to beat

The other people coming in with us and we also  want to beat the tourist groups to get those epic   shots let’s see if it works we have entered the  tunnel of light green light at the moment we are

On a mission to reach the end of the tunnel now  we have gone from green lights to Orange lights   I wonder if we’re going to have Rainbow Lights  along this tunnel this is going to be fun where

We’re about to enter a pink tunnel up ahead there  is some very spooky music playing sounds like   something out of a horror movie not sure I like  it I’m glad I’m not in here alone that’s all I’ll [Applause] say well it’s getting Misty in  here hey yeah ooh little feel Ominous Hey how are you enjoying it it’s amazing and our  strategy paid off we were the first for the view   so we got to get our shots that we wanted and  then also it was kind of neat because the floor

Was actually wet so I was one of the few people  that actually had sandals on and I walked in my   bare feet out there and uh as the some crowds came  there was some people that were actually using me

As a model they be like no stand here from midle  turn around come a bit closer so that couldn’t   have gone any better it was uh it was fun to have  the space to ourselves for a little bit and it

Was also fun to interact with some of the other  uh visitors who came out there so really really   cool and um quite the experience walking in the  tunnel with all the different neon lighting very neat all right this next work of art is also a  toilet take us in please because apparently the

It’s art itself the toilet this might be one of  the more interesting plan let’s take a look open   you got a you toilet with a view toilet with a  view you can actually be sitting on the toilet

Like this okay I’m watching other people you  can see them they can’t see you see you well   that’s the coolest toilet ever this one is  more oh natural right yeah this is the very   first one is the most normal one nothing  particularly special no installations some

Cool wooden benches yeah some nice benches  to sit and we reverse engineered this entire   experience going from last to First well guys  we have a lot of time until we catch the next   bus that goes to usawa it goes at 12:12 so  we need to find ways to pass time and there

Just so happens to be a cafe with a little  foot bath on the second floor yeah we didn’t   show this but we actually had some nice cookies  too we had some walnut cookies at the cafe till

They went 15 minutes and then now we’re up here  another work of art yeah there’s actually like   some type of mirror on the ceiling so you can  enjoy the views of the Kiyotsu gorge while you

Soak your feet this is a cool free attraction  that you could do before or after the main one [Applause] [Music] yeah [Laughter] [Music]  this mon is the be very careful under a frog wow we are officially unofficially calling  this Temple the Jumping Frog Temple we saw

At least what four or five jumping frogs of  various sizes and what’s interesting about   them is they blend so well into the steps which  are covered in Moss and are a little bit Brown   that you can’t even really see them you just  suddenly see something like jerk move out of

The way and jump it’s really funny um this is  a local temple we we don’t know anything about   it we just noticed it on the way back and we  thought we would come and explore it so here we are she rains she pours [Music]

[Music] [Applause] well all good things come  to an end and unfortunately our time here in   this beautiful Japanese mountain town is  now over we’re saying goodbye to you from   our cozy little guest house this has been the  most affordable place we’ve had on our entire

Trip it’s just $30 a night so the reason this  apartment was affordable is because it’s off   seon and we’re staying in Yuzawa a ski resort  absolutely love getting Bargains like that and   we really enjoyed being here this place was  really underrated it was a little bit quirky

And fun and after spending a lot of time  in cities we were recently in saporo and   niigata we really were craving some kind of like  downtime something a little bit of a slower pace   and we got that here we had a great time here  we’d highly recommend it and we hope you stay

Tuned because we’ve got some more off the beaten  path Adventures for you in Japan coming [Music] soon

Today, we’re taking you to Yuzawa, a town in the mountainous region of Niigata Prefecture, mainly known for its heavy snowfall and hot springs where we’ll cover all of the top things to do in this travel guide. However, we visited in late summer, so there was no skiing for us!

Instead, we rode the ropeway up the mountain to visit an alpine botanical garden, hiked to the nearby Fudo Falls, and sampled sake at the Ponshukan Sake Museum inside Echigo Yuzawa Train Station.

We also visited lots of baths across town – hand baths, foot baths, and even a sake bath! Plus, we went on a day trip to Kiyotsu Gorge to visit the famous Tunnel of Light.

So join us in this Yuzawa travel guide for some ideas of fun things to do here on your own trip!

Yuzawa, nestled in the mountainous Niigata Prefecture, is renowned for its heavy snowfall and hot springs, but our late-summer visit unveiled a different charm. As skiing wasn’t an option, we embarked on a diverse exploration, starting with the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway. This scenic journey whisked us to an alpine botanical garden, a lush oasis showcasing the region’s diverse flora.

Our adventure continued with a hike to the serene Fudo Falls. The cascade’s natural beauty was a refreshing sight, distinct from Yuzawa’s winter persona. Gastronomy was also a key part of our experience. We indulged in local delicacies like Chicken Katsudon and Ginger Pork, adding a flavorful twist to our journey. Not to be missed was the Nakanoya Soba Yuzawa Shop, where the soba noodles offered an authentic taste of Japanese culinary traditions.

The Ponshukan Sake Museum inside Echigo Yuzawa Train Station was a highlight, allowing us to sample various sakes and learn about their intricate brewing processes. Additionally, we discovered the unique pleasure of hand and foot baths across town, including a distinctive sake bath experience.

Our day trip to Kiyotsu Gorge was a journey into natural grandeur. The Tunnel of Light, a renowned attraction, presented a mesmerizing blend of art and nature. Finally, our visit to Suwa Shrine added a spiritual dimension, rounding off a trip that beautifully encapsulated Yuzawa’s multifaceted allure. This Yuzawa travel guide is a testament to the town’s year-round charm, offering myriad activities beyond its famed winter sports.

  1. wow just started watching and my Conure started screaming for my attention lol and I had to play ball with him and forgot to pause the vid, so back to the beginning 🙂

  2. I've been really enjoyed your Japan vids. Love how adventurous you guys are with food " I don't know what I am having but is kinda nice".

  3. Ten minutes in and video's intro arrives. Audrey probably had the better deal during the sake onsen. The tunnel of light was very interesting.

  4. OK, the moment of truth has arrived: this unquestionably interesting video featuring beautiful images of lush greenery and mouth-watering food has a dark secret hiding behind it: it has been edited in such a way as to conceal the fact that Audrey had no less than 17 cups of sake! It looks like she had several, but the truth is she had 17! One of the parts removed from the video is the one in which she's about to take her 16th cup and Sam tells her "I think that's enough, Audrey…" and she's like "I beg your pardon, Sam?! Then Sam says "I said that's enough." And then she says: "OMG, are you implying I have a drinking problem, Sammy boy, are you?! And Sam's like "No, woman, I just think 15 cups of sake is enough, it's too much, that's all…" And then Audrey's like "I am so sober I could name all the provinces of Argentina right now!" Then Sam says: "Oh, come on, Audrey, it's obvious you couldn't name the capital city of Argentina at this moment!" Then Audrey says: "Oh, take that back!" and Sam's like "¡Ni lo sueñes!". That reply of his was the last straw; looking at Sam with anger and determination she responds by saying: "Oh, boy, I'm definitely taking one more cup after this one! You're such a killjoy, Samuel Jeffery!" Being fully aware that insisting she should not do it, would be absolutely counterproductive, poor Sam just sighs and says to himself: "This woman's stubbornness is going to drive me to an early grave…" Joking aside, I really think your lovable personalities represent one of essential elements of these videos!

  5. My dad took one business trip to Japan in the late 70s. The employees there took him to eat every day, and mostly to seafood restaurants, where they did all the ordering. When he asked what various items were when set in front of him, the Japanese folks often discussed among themselves how to say it in English…but always defaulted to "small sea creature"…so he still never knew what he was eating. 🤣

  6. Typical weather in Niigata ,the sudden rain that hit you unexpectedly 😅😅😅, enjoy your stay in Niigata ❤

  7. Audrey, I know what you mean, me liky some umeshu (a.k.a Japanese plum wine. Choya is unexpensive and easy to find). And I don't know if you've heard this already but it is apparently super easy to make, I've seen a bunch of vids talking about it here on YT

  9. I have been following you for a few years now and don’t usually comment but I just wanted to say thank you for your beautiful scenery, for the delicious food and interesting sights. I especially want to thank you for speaking so clearly that I understand you perfectly. I used to love to travel and learn about places, especially off the beaten track. I’m too old and sick to go anywhere now so I enjoy watching travel videos. Yours are the best quality videos I have ever seen. I have also loved watching you renovate the family property in Argentina. I love when Audrey’s father comes with you as he is such a gentleman. Please keep sharing your wonderful videos. Love from Australia 😊😊😊

  10. Aprendiendo, admirando y disfrutando los vídeos, muchas gracias por su profesionalismo, seriedad y amor en cada, presentación de los mismos. Saludos desde Bucaramanga, Colombia.

  11. Siempre muy felices de verlos Samuel & Audrey. Muy interesante todo su viaje a Japon.
Saludos desde San Fernando, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  12. Do you know how i found your channel 3 years ago? I was looking for apartment tours in japan and your tokyo apartment tour was one of them. So happy i can watch japan vlogs with you again 😊 greetings from germany

  13. Hermoso video!!! Súper editado y mostrando paisajes únicos. Gracias y un gran abrazo desde buenos aires. ❤

  14. I ve been watching all japanese videos. Japan is amazing. The landscape, the food, the people, everything so delicate and superb. The food machines, interesting, not the best option, the sake machines, a discovery, very appealling though I m not a drinker. What calls my attention is that architecture has not evolved. The combination of highways and structures and buildings from the late sixties or seventies I don t like. The culture, the manners, the hospitality outstanding. Tiny spaces, cozy but just for foreigners, not to live.

  15. I went to Jigokudani in 2015 and saw the monkeys during the winter. Honestly it was such a beautiful experience that i cried walking back to the village. But i have to say that your footage of monkeys in the pool without snow on the ground are just amazing! When the weather is colder, steam from the onsen makes it impossible to see below the waterline. So you guys captured something that seemed really unique! I've seen the snow monkeys in the snowy wintery onsen on tv a few times since, but it never even occurred to me that it might look even better during warmer weather. Thanks for a great vid 😉
