Surviving my second Winter of Extreme Van Life Part 1. November and December Blizzards, Snow Storms & Freezing Temperatures Late November Well hello again, I have started my winter tour for the 2024 winter season There is gonna be a big storm over the next few days

Down where I am now it is raining, but up on the mountain it is gonna be a full storm and close to a metre of snow I am going to try to film some of the storm for you to see

I have got my yellow down booties on, which means it is winter A few days later The crazy blizzard is raging above me in the mountains Good morning, I was just checking the road conditions,

And it looks like they are opening the road across the mountain again today the way I want to go. It has been closed for a couple of day, but now they are going to do convoy driving for the next few hours so I am going to drive up there and see what happens

The weather could be bad or good, there is sunshine but there is also a lot of wind It is just a very exposed road across the highest mountain plateau in Europe Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back was filmed in this area I am planning on camping up there

Its gonna be very cold, but not as windy as it has been lately. It has been close to hurricane force winds up there so a lot of snow probably came down. Gonna have some breakfast here now and then I am going to head up the mountain I am heading up over these mountains

Now it is time to start climbing into the mountains It has not been slippery yet, but as we climb up in elevation it is going to start getting slippery. so i am going to get up and get in line for the convoy.

It is going to be cool to see what it is like up there. According to the website the convoy is going to go on until 11 tonight which is 12 hours from now I am going to ask if I can be let out of the convoy to park up on the mountain

Convoy staging area So it looks like the convoy just left but they are opening the road in an hour so I am going up on my own then. Hopefully I can find a place to camp Last convoy and then we are free! The mighty Hardangervidda plateau This is cold!

I am back in the cold mountains it is minus 10° celsius here right now It could get down to minus 15° or minus 20° I have a Truma Combi 4 propane heater in my van, it works really well there is a snow storm blowing, but the road is open for now

A lot of snow just drifting across the plains here now I am going to stay up here through the night and there is going to be more of a storm but it is going to be very enjoyable Let us celebrate being out in the cold mountains again with a cup of coffee!

Got my first winter coffee of the season Look at this, it is so beautiful here This is gonna be super cozy Looks like it is minus 6° celsius right now Cheers my friends! So in case you havent noticed, I have gotten a drone It is a DJI mini 4 pro

Gonna be showing you a lot of the locations from above now This is snowdrift, not clouds It is pretty cool out there The sunset combined with the wind and the snowdrift I think I got some nice video shots It is cold! It is time for dinner while the storm is raging outside

Im a going to make some sausage and cheese burritos today Just a simple comfort meal today Hungry now after a really fun day Driving up here was awesome I was able to get up here without going with a convoy and that makes it much easier to find a place to camp

There are nobody else up here camping, but there are a lot of cars driving past It is kind of harsh up here now I am looking forward to making a good meal now, and just enjoying being up on the mountain here

One of my favorite TV shows is “For all Mankind” Kind of hooked on that, so watching season 4 now It is really cool! Good morning that was a rough night The wind rocked the van and made so much sound in the sunroofs that I didnt fall asleep until 4

And those plow trucks where driving past every hours or so, and I woke up every time one of them passed. But still, really awesome night yesterday and a fantastic feeling of being up here in the mountains

This morning it is a beautiful morning. There is a little bit of wind still and there could be a lot of snow later on but right now there is sunshine, and the sun is barely looking above the horizon here. It is November 25th now so there is only a few hours of daylight

It is nearly 11 now and the sun just looked over the horizon. But now the most important meal of the day, coffee! And then I am just going to enjoy this beautiful scenery here for a while,

And them I am gonna see what I will do later on. If I should drive on or stay here another night. The wind picks up again It is a quiet morning with no wind around minus 7 or 8 degrees celsius It is calm before the snowfall late November

Not a whole lot of snow but you could ski if you wanted to A lovely Sunday morning Today it is kind of mellow, with minus 7 degrees celsius but tomorrow it is going to be down to minus 22° celsius so that is a completely different experience

That is much more harsh temperatures for November I dont know I am staying up here on the mountain or if I am driving down into the valleys I have to go and empty my toilet anyway today Usually when the weather clears it get super cold down in the valleys

It is a bit early for those cold temperatures yet, but that is fine. the sun is beautiful behind the mist here Geilo ski resort town Campsite for the night as temperatures drop towards minus 20° celsius (-4°f) It is getting quite cold, minus 15° celsius (5°f) now and it is only 5:30 pm

It is time for dinner, gonna make some comfort food of susages, spinach and french fries and cheese. Only had a few sandwiches for dinner yesterday, so need something more filling today Minus 16 outside now. I actually think I am going to turn this into a burrito again, usually burritos are my comfort food

Been making a lot of burritos this winter so far. looks like ti is getting really cold.i think we can expect minus 20° celsius It has been 6-7 months since I had such temperatures the last time. I am always a little bit on the edge about the first real cold of the season

It takes a while to get back in the habit of extreme temperatures it is usually very pretty when it is cold though Minus 17°c in the morning. It got down to minus 18°c through the night (-0.4°f) Now I am going over this mountain pass here

A place I have never been before, but it looks awesome! Gonna make a right here and start climbing Always excited for new places to go Steep stuff here! I am glad I have my Nokian winter tires! They just make such a huge difference. Wow, getting up on the high mountain plateau now. Awesome!

Crossing Imingfjell mountain plateau road, which will close for the winter in a few days The town of Rjukan It is snowing pretty heavily I spent a couple of days down in slightly warmer climate to finish up a couple of videos I got a couple of day of work done

And now I am heading up into the mountains again It is a big snow day today this is fun! Never been here before, so this is cool! I always love experiencing new places We are going up across some mountain passes

Let us hope the road is open, doesnt look like there is any closures according to the transportation website Out here is the famous “Heroes of Telemark” building or power plant from world war 2 They made a Kirk Douglas movie called “The Heroes of Telemark” from that incident The buildings are out here somewhere

The invaders that had conquered Norway were trying to build a nuclear bomb, so they developed or made something called heavy water which is needed for the process That building there Some Norwegian saboteurs flew in on the mountain and sabotaged the production of the heavy water

One of the most famous WW2 site in Norway actually. Right here in this beautiful valley I did not expect this massive snow weather up here today I expected it to be incredibly cold but now it is barely below freezing but this snowy weather is kind of awesome!

This is like straight out of Skyrim This is pretty crazy Marshmallow land I dont think I will be able to find a place to park up here in this weather All the parking lots are completely snowed in Only 4km to where I had planned to park, but that is probably not gonna happen

I can never imagine they have plowed that parking lot yet. They just plowed the parking lot here Perfect place for camping here gotta love this Just a perfect spot, and I think it is going to stop snowing and then it is going to get super cold

Gonna stay up here, and it is getting dark in half an hour so I am not going to continue over the mountain today should be a beautiful day tomorrow or the day after Gonna turn around so I can look out my bedroom window towards the lake

I got my insulation mats installed in the front windows This quite nice with all the snow here very cool Didnt expect this, it wasnt on the forescast But you got to love snow whenever you can get it! Getting some extra insulation on the van here

It is actually not that cold now, it is more like just below freezing so the snow is really nice and almost balmy The is the ventilation for the heater this is inside so nice and cozy inside out here is the lake good morning up in the sunroof here still snowing quite beautiful outside

Might have to get up here and clear this snow the ventilation around the sunroofs seem to have cleared itself from snow the solar panel though is completely covered, but there is no use in it this time of year anyway Minus 11.2° now

It has been snowing a lot through the night so I am probably snowed in here a little bit that is cool, I love being snowed in gonna start the day with the most important meal of the day, which is coffee finally the coffee, I can feel the energy rushing back in

It is November 30th, not even December yet. only a few hours of daylight this time of the year but we got the potential for som beautiful lights through the night stars and northern lights and stuff snow at night is also amazingly beautiful today I am going to head further west

The plan is to stop by my hometown for Christmas then I am going to head north in January the plan is to go up to the Arctic to Lofoten Never been in Lofoten in winter, got a lot of stuff to explore up there in winter

Weather is clearing so it is getting colder, minus 11.4° now. still in November Haukeliseter Lodge This is gonna get cold, it is already minus 11. Minus 12 and it is only four This should get interesting, it drops fast now, minus 12.3

I will keep and eye on the temperature outside for sure, but what a place! Look at this thats 2 minutes later I didnt have breakfast ro lunch today, and it is 4:30 now, so I am gonna have this little pizza bun. look at this beautiful and cold

It is dinner time and today I am making egg and tomato sandwiches it is so cold here, the wind is howling and it is minus 13° celsius it is going to get down to between minus 15 and minus 17 so it could be really cold

You can feel that the van is not too well insulated against heavy wind in these temperatures the heater is running on full power so it is comfortable in here but it is going to use a lot of propane on this anyway, lets get dinner going This is going to be good lets see what happens to the tomatoes, if they go swish! the tomato on the first one didnt go swish so lets see the second one That is the taste of Christmas to me 2°F Minus 16.5°c (2°f) was the low point through the night

Let us get some heat in here Amazing view! Good morning, got my coffee, and how about this view! Got down to minus 16.5° through the night and right now it is minus 15 the sun is just peeking out now at 10:30 hopefully the sun is warming up the van a little bit

I have been running the heater at 12°c through the night which was quite comfortable but I can feel that there is cold coming in from under the seats and through the window areas Might look at adding some more insulation with velcro or something.

Las year I didnt feel the need for adding insulation to the windows, but I am maybe a little more picky about it this year. anyway, it is so nice to have a cup of coffee and enjoy this beautiful winter scenery while i am getting some work done on my computer here

I am going to head outside and give you a drone overview later on. Let us see if we can get the engine started It was minus 16.5°, now it is around minus 14°. It is around noon. hopefully it will start yep a little bit slow, but no problem

Now I am going to let it run for a while, and I am going to head outside and show you the are from the drone. This window is totally frozen The front window as well good thing I have these covers here that is a lot of ice today but this window is clear

Out here is the Hardangerjøkulen glacier pretty cool to be able to see it from my van It is dinner time, and today I am making some grilled cheeze with eggs and tomatoes and chilli mayo the we got “Matts Offroad Recovery” here

It is Friday night, 5 in the afternoon and it is currently minus 12°celsius outside Pretty warm and cozy in here now As I make my way for the coastal lowlands for Christmas I am surprised by another snow storm December delivers several hurricanes on the coast with up to 12m/39ft waves

And more snow storms and blizzards in the mountains The Empire Strikes Back filming site I have now completed this loop around the highest mountain plateau in Europe, Hardangervidda. In January I will start going north towards the Arctic for my big winter tour.

This was quite the incredible experience and I was lucky to capture the cozy feeling of the blizzards and snow storm in HDR. I bring my new DJI mini4 pro drone for the first time and circle the highest mountain plateau of its kind in Europe as the first leg of my arctic winter tour.

My van is a Fiat Ducato, FWD with Nokian Winter Tires. This is the same as a Ram Promaster in the USA and Canada.
