Hello! This time, we are in Ito City on the east side of the Izu Peninsula. From here, we’ll explore Mount Omuro, Jogasaki Coast, and Izu Granpal Park all in one day. This area is part of the Izu Eastern Volcanic Zone, known for its volcanoes and submarine volcanoes.
Mount Omuro, which erupted about 4,000 years ago, is one of them. Due to conservation efforts, you can’t hike up; instead, you can use a lift and reach the summit in about 6 minutes.
It’s surprising that there are no big trees on the mountain. This is because of the annual controlled burning (scheduled for February 2024) to preserve the natural environment. We can see Mount Fuji! At the summit, you can walk around the crater.
With an elevation of 580 meters, it has a shape like an overturned bowl. There are souvenir shops and dumpling shops. I ordered soy sauce-flavored dumplings for 300 yen for two. Let’s start walking around the crater! The islands of the Izu archipelago offer a beautiful view.
In the middle of the summit, there’s an archery range. Izu Kogen is a flat land formed by lava flows. It’s flat all the way to the coast. You can enjoy a 360-degree view. It’s almost lunchtime, so let’s have pasta at a restaurant near Mount Omuro. Lots of cheese!
We take a bus to Jogasaki Coast. I’d like to visit Mount Omuro again during the fresh green season. The mountain should be covered in lush greenery! I also bought strawberry chocolate for myself. We’re soon arriving at the Izu Ocean Park bus stop.
It’s about a 20-minute walk from here to the suspension bridge at Jogasaki Coast. You can see Izu Oshima. The sea water looks clean. The landscape reminds me of the Tuesday Suspense Theater I watched as a child. Jogasaki Coast was formed by lava flowing into Sagami Bay, creating a complex terrain.
You can see Mount Omuro from the lighthouse. The suspension bridge is also visible. Let’s take a look below. It didn’t sway enough to be particularly concerning. It’s a bit scary to peek down from the cliff. From the Ocean Park bus stop, we head to Izu Granpal Park.
We came to see an illumination called “Gran Illumi.” Since it hasn’t started yet, let’s have dinner first. We ordered chijimi and gyoza at a Korean restaurant. Gran Illumi is in its 9th year. The admission fee is 1,800 yen on weekdays and 1,900 yen on weekends and peak season.
What’s surprising is that it’s being held from November 11, 2023, to August 31, 2024! The illumination, which I thought was associated with winter, is apparently held in the summer as well. Attractions are also sparkling. Here it is! Looks like a lot of fun. There’s also projection mapping!
The scale is impressive, giving a powerful effect. Every few minutes, the illumination changes to the music. I think it was every 15 minutes (I forgot 😅). ✳︎The actual music may differ.
