Funchal MARKET FOOD Tour + Funchal CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 🇵🇹

Welcome back to Madeira guys it’s December  it’s rapidly approaching Christmas and   in Funchal that means two things the  Christmas lights and the night Street   Food Market so in today’s video let’s  go and see what food they have on offer  

In the little night market and of course  check out the Christmas lights let’s do it right I made it for the Christmas Market  right in the centre of Funchal have this   beautiful little Christmas Market it  looks amazing with the lights it’s not  

A night market it is open during the day but  I recommend for the best atmosphere for the   best experience you should come at night  obviously that’s why I brought you here   now if you have all of these little Huts these  little cabins selling food selling alcohol it  

Is evening it’s about 7:00pm now it’s not so  busy here it’s just starting to fill out but   it’s definitely time to grab something to eat  let’s have a look around and see what we can

Find all right before we eat I just had to show  you this the “Lapinha” and I didn’t really know   what the “Lapinha” was before I saw this one and  I was blown away by it so I just had to show you  

Before we got some food you got the traditional  Santana houses you’ve got animals you got little   lettuces growing in the fields and of course  all the people are dressed in the traditional   Madeiran dress pretty damn cool I must admit  you’ve even got its very own waterfall you can  

See it’s made of natural material you’ve got Moss  for the grass this I guess is the waterfall Levada   running through it and then as I said all of the  figurines in the traditional costumes it looks  

Amazing I mean come on every time I see it I’m  just struck by how amazing it is and of course   importantly in the corner you have the Nativity  as you would expect that’s the point in this but  

I just love how it it looks so much like madira  but this whole area is like a little cultural   area or at least showcasing all of the crafts in  Madera you have the Wicker Basket making section  

Here there’s a little Hut or a little section for  the different crafts over here you have wooden   Poncha sticks pestle and mortars egg cups this  guy is dressed in the traditional uniform look   at the size imagine the puncher you can make with  that look at the size of that Poncha stick this is  

The Poncha stick the stick used to make the poncha  and actually he’s whittling one over here I think   that’s what it’s called when you’re whittling a  stick yeah that’s cool I love people whether it’s  

Food or crafts I love seeing it food and just next  to the “Lapinha” is well a place that is more up   by alley I think you’ve got these cauldrons these  bats cooking traditional soups here just what you  

Need on a cold evening and of course to go with  soup you need Bolo do Caco made over a charcoal   fire you will not find Better Bolo do Caco than  this you can see she’s cooking them just look  

At that a caldron of soup “Canja” a chicken soup  traditional chicken soup in Madeira called “Canja”   just look at that they don’t have to cook them  over this wood fire but you just know that is  

Going to make it taste so so much better cooked  in the old way the smell is amazing I wish you   could smell this I guess you’re just going to have  to come down and check it out for yourselves but  

Yeah this lovely lady let me film so thank you  very much I just need to show you this Bolo do   Caco I haven’t tasted it yet but I can just see  it’s going to be incredible look at this first of  

All you can see it’s homemade the dough is proving  but this this is the money shot right guys again   charcoal fire you’ve got the ones already cooked  here warm on top cooking look at that one they go  

On to the hot plate kneading out oh huffed in my  face yeah thank you she finds that funny as the   smoke comes up and catches me in the eyes but you  can see because this the fire is underneath the  

Color on that Bolo do Caco don’t know how long it  would take to cook but the smell coming off here   is amazing Obrigado oh I got in trouble I wasn’t  allowed to film in there but I think I paid my  

Penance my eyes from the smoke haven’t been crying  stinging my eyes but let’s order and let’s eat Obrigado right guys food is on the table look at  this Bolo do Caco and Canja as I said Madeiran  

Chicken soup I mean it smells good the smell  coming off it you can see the fat on top you   just know that’s going to be delicious little  bits of chicken although not that much chicken  

In here I must admit I feel like I’ve been short  changed look at the meat in the lovely people next   to me look at theirs I mean she wanted to rub it  in so much she took a photo I mean I’m on a hunt  

For meat here yeah she she wasn’t very happy  with being filmed maybe um but it’s okay I’m   sure it’s about the flavor not not not the amount  of meat there’s plenty more food to come filming  

In Madeira is a little bit different to filming  in Asia in Asia no one looks at me here I feel   like the eyes are on me but the benefit of that is  the wonderful barman What’s Your Name by the way  

To Diogo Diogo has offered me to try some poncha  a traditional drink of Madera big drink drink at   Christmas let’s try it this one is made with honey  and orange see okay look at this actually the  

Color is amazing it’s not quite as bright orange  as normal poncha but it looks amazing I’m going   to be honest guys I’m not normally a big fan of  Poncha it’s a little too strong for me especially   the fisherman’s Poncha which is the traditional  one this one looks good he’s put some alcohol in

This that might be the best Poncha I’ve tried  sweet with the honey but light and delicate   you get the floral flavors from the honey  wow then of course the whack the whack of   alcohol right at the end that is delicious  all right away from the hustle and bustle  

First food of the Christmas Market Canja  traditional chicken soup in Madera as I   said with carrot onion rice and chicken but that  fat on the top is what intrigues me you just know   well you’ve heard me say before if you watch  the channel fat is Flavor so let’s give it a

Taste wow molten hot from that cauldron as  you’d expect but the flavor obviously it’s   exactly what you want on a Winter’s evening  you want a warming soup but the flavor of the   chicken is so good and I’m certain I’m sure of  it it’s because of that chicken fat sitting on  

Top so delicious big hit of chicken flavor  and then comes the creaminess the creaminess   from that Rice because it’s been cooked for so  long that rice has broken down into like a not   a mush because that sounds bad but when you put  it in your mouth it goes so creamy and it gives  

Such a good texture to this soup the only thing  the only thing that can make it better is ball   of Theo Bolo do Caco I mean I think it’s the  biggest Bolo do Caco I’ve ever seen definitely  

Bigger than my head but just look that’s half  of it look at the thickness of the Bolo do   Caco there and you can see as I said you have  to have garlic butter with it you can see the  

Layer of garlic butter exactly how you want it  so I’m going to dip it in there suck up some of   that soup and suck up some of that chicken oil  on top or chicken fat on top and get it in the

Mouth you cannot beat homemade bread of course  and to see it being made on the hot plate yeah   it adds that little bit extra to the experience  but I must admit it’s crisp on the outside it’s   fluffy in the middle it’s delicious I love this  it’s such a friendly atmosphere in this Christmas  

Market of course I mean Madeira is a friendly  place it’s safe everyone sat down eating their   Canja and their terra cotta pots as it’s steaming  away but as I say friendly atmosphere and friendly   locals being talked to by everyone what’s your  name Rosa Rosa and you’re originally from Madera  

But living in the UK back on holiday how’s the  Canja five stars five stars woo Google review   five stars you’ve heard it from Rosa come here  and try to can you wow that was good the only  

Thing I would say is the line or the queue can  get pretty busy to eat here so either come early   or maybe come during the day when it is quiet and  you’ll find a place to eat but it is worth eating  

Here very very delicious but it’s not the only  food in this little Christmas Market so let’s   go have a look and see what else we can find  guys there are plenty more videos coming from

You have poncha everywhere actually Madeira  wine beer liquors and considering we just   tried some Poncha I think I want to show you  something a little bit different and something   with which to be honest I didn’t expect to  find in Madeira cider who would have thought  

In Madeira a local made cider and one which  is pretty good Award winning cider I’ll tell   you a little more about it when we get it but  you have two types you have the standard cider  

For €1 pretty good value I’d say or you have  hot cider which I know is mulled cider like   you have mulled wine in the UK so that is what  we’re going to get perfect for Christmas time

You have to try famous pastry in Madeira and  they have a little store here I’ve never seen   these guys before and they look pretty good  I must say what is your name by the way so my  

Name is Miguel Miguel Miguel was just telling  me they are very new at the minute only online   orders but soon in the future maybe you’ll get  to see them in a little physical shop they look   amazing of course you have the original flavor  but look at this you have lemon the passion  

Fruit Nutella strawberry and egg haven’t  really seen different flavors of Queijada   before but I told you they look amazing look  at this look at this could be like a boutique   lined up here anyway Miguel which one do you  recommend sure passion fruit or lemon very  

Nice which one which one is better well for  you okay passion fruit okay all right we’re   going to be greedy and we’re going to get two  we’re going to get the passion fruit and the original all right guys I’ve got my two  Queijadas and the hot cider I thought they  

Go well together and it’s Christmas so why not  the Queijada I’m not really sure which one to   try first the passion fruit or the original  but I guess the original is what I’ve kind of   got a benchmark towards so we should go with  the original first if you do not know what a  

Queijada is there’s a sweet pastry typical  in Madeira but made with cheese as well so   sounds interesting it is delicious I’ve had  them before I filmed them before but these   ones look particularly good very dainty as  you can see so just break it open oh look at

That wow that there might be one of the best  Queijada I have ever had the cheese or the   cheesiness is perfect sometimes you get Queijada  and they’re just too sweet you just taste all   sugar but here you get the acidity really coming  through from the cheese balance so nicely with  

The sugar it’s not claggy it’s light and then  the pastry on the bottom there is pastry on the   bottom if you can see the pastry has a crunch wow  that is incredible all right wash it down with a  

Hot cider I’m looking forward to this I went to  University in the southwest of England where well   it’s cider country and hot cider is going to be a  memory of being at University a long time ago now  

I must admit but this one just from the smell you  can smell the cinnamon you can smell the stares   it’s got fennel in there bit of lemon zest Ginger  and uh yeah I’ve already tried the cider before I  

Know the cider is good quality but I haven’t  tried the hot one so let’s let’s give it a taste that that is delicious again like the Queijada not sweet but the  intensity of those spices and he took so  

Much care put the herbs in spritzed in a  bit of lemon zest cut up the ginger and   obviously if you’re starting with good cider  you’re going to get a good hot cider yeah if   anything is making me feel Christmasy other  than the beautiful lights it’s the hot cider  

Onto the passion fruit Queijada Madeira is  famous for passion fruit you get passion   fruit everywhere passion fruit poncha is  very famous of course but I’ve never seen   passion fruit Queijada you can just see  by the little seeds on top just a little  

Reminder and the color it’s more yellow than  the original Queijada you can see it is made   with real passion fruit so yeah I don’t really  know what to expect from this one let’s try it m wow the original is great the passion  fruit is very very good didn’t expect such  

A hit of passion fruit you can taste the  passion fruit puree on top but look it’s   fantastic it’s delicious but if I must choose  between the two I’m choosing the original at   the end of the day that’s my memory of Queijada  and I think this one goes to number one in my  

Queijada list look out for them he gave me a  hint he said they’re going to have a little   food truck down on the front by the Madan  flag in Praca do Povo coming soon don’t miss

It I can think of nothing better after Queijada  and hot cider sweet hot cider than having a pork   sandwich but here we are we’re in the Christmas  Market and there’s a little bit more room left and   I really did want to show you this sandwich  Carne Vinha d’Alhos or pork garlic and wine  

Sandwich look how amazing that looks slow cook  pork sandwich with garlic with wine amazing and I   didn’t catch it on video but she then pours over a  little bit of that liquor the cooking liquor into   the sandwich another one you just know is going  to be tasting very typical this time of year  

You see it being sold everywhere and it’s very  famous at these Christmas markets anyway smells amazing that that is incredible normally Well  normally I eat these at festivals there’s   festivals all over the island and they’re always  selling these my one complaint with them is even  

Though I order them every single time is that  they’re too salty this one is perfect you get the   acidity from the wine that it’s been cooked in but  that pork it’s so soft it’s melt in the mouth it’s  

Porky and then the garlic flavor comes through  just at the end perfect in that soft bun just   to soak it all up it’s so so good and my favorite  part other than the fact that the Christmas tree  

Matches my jumper of course is that it has little  bits of the pork skin in there that have just   gone soft and gelatinous right can’t leave the  market on something Savory can we something sweet   something alcoholic just to finish it off before  we go and check out the Christmas lights let’s

Go all right last thing before going to check  out the lights Ginja or Gijinha if you’ve been   to Lisbon famous in Lisbon also popular in Madera  especially at Christmas time Cherry lure and to   be honest guys I’m not the biggest fan of liquors  I’m not the biggest fan of strong alcohol so for  

Me if you’re going to have ginger the chocolate  may as well be good and you’re not going to get   better chocolate than wow cacao in Madeira  fantastic chocolate it’s been in the video   before but the concept here is the ginger or the  Cure goes into the chocolate cup and yeah it’s an

All-in-one just well obviously bursts  in your mouth the chocolate it’s such   good quality it balances so nicely  with that Ginger that strong but not   too strong Cherry lure the perfect  way to finish this little food tour   around the market anyway as promised  guys let’s go check out the lights

Okay guys I cannot think of a better place  to come to finish this video than here in the   a Praca Do Povo right next to the huge Christmas  tree and of course it’s Christmas after all a bag  

Of roasted chestnuts you can get them all along  the Waterfront down here in Funchal and I just   couldn’t resist even though I’ve eaten so much  food it’s been so fun coming out and showing   you the Christmas lights here in Funchal and the  Christmas Market I hope you enjoyed it Funchal  

Really is so so Charming at this time of year and  for me after a year in Asia it’s so nice to come   somewhere where I feel a little bit festive  well a little bit festive very festive I hope
