Funchal MARKET FOOD Tour + Funchal CHRISTMAS LIGHTS šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹

Welcome back to Madeira guys it’s DecemberĀ  it’s rapidly approaching Christmas andĀ Ā  in Funchal that means two things theĀ  Christmas lights and the night StreetĀ Ā  Food Market so in today’s video let’sĀ  go and see what food they have on offerĀ Ā

In the little night market and of courseĀ  check out the Christmas lights let’s do it right I made it for the Christmas MarketĀ  right in the centre of Funchal have thisĀ Ā  beautiful little Christmas Market itĀ  looks amazing with the lights it’s notĀ Ā

A night market it is open during the day butĀ  I recommend for the best atmosphere for theĀ Ā  best experience you should come at nightĀ  obviously that’s why I brought you hereĀ Ā  now if you have all of these little Huts theseĀ  little cabins selling food selling alcohol itĀ Ā

Is evening it’s about 7:00pm now it’s not soĀ  busy here it’s just starting to fill out butĀ Ā  it’s definitely time to grab something to eatĀ  let’s have a look around and see what we can

Find all right before we eat I just had to showĀ  you this the “Lapinha” and I didn’t really knowĀ Ā  what the “Lapinha” was before I saw this one andĀ  I was blown away by it so I just had to show youĀ Ā

Before we got some food you got the traditionalĀ  Santana houses you’ve got animals you got littleĀ Ā  lettuces growing in the fields and of courseĀ  all the people are dressed in the traditionalĀ Ā  Madeiran dress pretty damn cool I must admitĀ  you’ve even got its very own waterfall you canĀ Ā

See it’s made of natural material you’ve got MossĀ  for the grass this I guess is the waterfall LevadaĀ Ā  running through it and then as I said all of theĀ  figurines in the traditional costumes it looksĀ Ā

Amazing I mean come on every time I see it I’mĀ  just struck by how amazing it is and of courseĀ Ā  importantly in the corner you have the NativityĀ  as you would expect that’s the point in this butĀ Ā

I just love how it it looks so much like madiraĀ  but this whole area is like a little culturalĀ Ā  area or at least showcasing all of the crafts inĀ  Madera you have the Wicker Basket making sectionĀ Ā

Here there’s a little Hut or a little section forĀ  the different crafts over here you have woodenĀ Ā  Poncha sticks pestle and mortars egg cups thisĀ  guy is dressed in the traditional uniform lookĀ Ā  at the size imagine the puncher you can make withĀ  that look at the size of that Poncha stick this isĀ Ā

The Poncha stick the stick used to make the ponchaĀ  and actually he’s whittling one over here I thinkĀ Ā  that’s what it’s called when you’re whittling aĀ  stick yeah that’s cool I love people whether it’sĀ Ā

Food or crafts I love seeing it food and just nextĀ  to the “Lapinha” is well a place that is more upĀ Ā  by alley I think you’ve got these cauldrons theseĀ  bats cooking traditional soups here just what youĀ Ā

Need on a cold evening and of course to go withĀ  soup you need Bolo do Caco made over a charcoalĀ Ā  fire you will not find Better Bolo do Caco thanĀ  this you can see she’s cooking them just lookĀ Ā

At that a caldron of soup “Canja” a chicken soupĀ  traditional chicken soup in Madeira called “Canja”Ā Ā  just look at that they don’t have to cook themĀ  over this wood fire but you just know that isĀ Ā

Going to make it taste so so much better cookedĀ  in the old way the smell is amazing I wish youĀ Ā  could smell this I guess you’re just going to haveĀ  to come down and check it out for yourselves butĀ Ā

Yeah this lovely lady let me film so thank youĀ  very much I just need to show you this Bolo doĀ Ā  Caco I haven’t tasted it yet but I can just seeĀ  it’s going to be incredible look at this first ofĀ Ā

All you can see it’s homemade the dough is provingĀ  but this this is the money shot right guys againĀ Ā  charcoal fire you’ve got the ones already cookedĀ  here warm on top cooking look at that one they goĀ Ā

On to the hot plate kneading out oh huffed in myĀ  face yeah thank you she finds that funny as theĀ Ā  smoke comes up and catches me in the eyes but youĀ  can see because this the fire is underneath theĀ Ā

Color on that Bolo do Caco don’t know how long itĀ  would take to cook but the smell coming off hereĀ Ā  is amazing Obrigado oh I got in trouble I wasn’tĀ  allowed to film in there but I think I paid myĀ Ā

Penance my eyes from the smoke haven’t been cryingĀ  stinging my eyes but let’s order and let’s eat Obrigado right guys food is on the table look atĀ  this Bolo do Caco and Canja as I said MadeiranĀ Ā

Chicken soup I mean it smells good the smellĀ  coming off it you can see the fat on top youĀ Ā  just know that’s going to be delicious littleĀ  bits of chicken although not that much chickenĀ Ā

In here I must admit I feel like I’ve been shortĀ  changed look at the meat in the lovely people nextĀ Ā  to me look at theirs I mean she wanted to rub itĀ  in so much she took a photo I mean I’m on a huntĀ Ā

For meat here yeah she she wasn’t very happyĀ  with being filmed maybe um but it’s okay I’mĀ Ā  sure it’s about the flavor not not not the amountĀ  of meat there’s plenty more food to come filmingĀ Ā

In Madeira is a little bit different to filmingĀ  in Asia in Asia no one looks at me here I feelĀ Ā  like the eyes are on me but the benefit of that isĀ  the wonderful barman What’s Your Name by the wayĀ Ā

To Diogo Diogo has offered me to try some ponchaĀ  a traditional drink of Madera big drink drink atĀ Ā  Christmas let’s try it this one is made with honeyĀ  and orange see okay look at this actually theĀ Ā

Color is amazing it’s not quite as bright orangeĀ  as normal poncha but it looks amazing I’m goingĀ Ā  to be honest guys I’m not normally a big fan ofĀ  Poncha it’s a little too strong for me especiallyĀ Ā  the fisherman’s Poncha which is the traditionalĀ  one this one looks good he’s put some alcohol in

This that might be the best Poncha I’ve triedĀ  sweet with the honey but light and delicateĀ Ā  you get the floral flavors from the honeyĀ  wow then of course the whack the whack ofĀ Ā  alcohol right at the end that is deliciousĀ  all right away from the hustle and bustleĀ Ā

First food of the Christmas Market CanjaĀ  traditional chicken soup in Madera as IĀ Ā  said with carrot onion rice and chicken but thatĀ  fat on the top is what intrigues me you just knowĀ Ā  well you’ve heard me say before if you watchĀ  the channel fat is Flavor so let’s give it a

Taste wow molten hot from that cauldron asĀ  you’d expect but the flavor obviously it’sĀ Ā  exactly what you want on a Winter’s eveningĀ  you want a warming soup but the flavor of theĀ Ā  chicken is so good and I’m certain I’m sure ofĀ  it it’s because of that chicken fat sitting onĀ Ā

Top so delicious big hit of chicken flavorĀ  and then comes the creaminess the creaminessĀ Ā  from that Rice because it’s been cooked for soĀ  long that rice has broken down into like a notĀ Ā  a mush because that sounds bad but when you putĀ  it in your mouth it goes so creamy and it givesĀ Ā

Such a good texture to this soup the only thingĀ  the only thing that can make it better is ballĀ Ā  of Theo Bolo do Caco I mean I think it’s theĀ  biggest Bolo do Caco I’ve ever seen definitelyĀ Ā

Bigger than my head but just look that’s halfĀ  of it look at the thickness of the Bolo doĀ Ā  Caco there and you can see as I said you haveĀ  to have garlic butter with it you can see theĀ Ā

Layer of garlic butter exactly how you want itĀ  so I’m going to dip it in there suck up some ofĀ Ā  that soup and suck up some of that chicken oilĀ  on top or chicken fat on top and get it in the

Mouth you cannot beat homemade bread of courseĀ  and to see it being made on the hot plate yeahĀ Ā  it adds that little bit extra to the experienceĀ  but I must admit it’s crisp on the outside it’sĀ Ā  fluffy in the middle it’s delicious I love thisĀ  it’s such a friendly atmosphere in this ChristmasĀ Ā

Market of course I mean Madeira is a friendlyĀ  place it’s safe everyone sat down eating theirĀ Ā  Canja and their terra cotta pots as it’s steamingĀ  away but as I say friendly atmosphere and friendlyĀ Ā  locals being talked to by everyone what’s yourĀ  name Rosa Rosa and you’re originally from MaderaĀ Ā

But living in the UK back on holiday how’s theĀ  Canja five stars five stars woo Google reviewĀ Ā  five stars you’ve heard it from Rosa come hereĀ  and try to can you wow that was good the onlyĀ Ā

Thing I would say is the line or the queue canĀ  get pretty busy to eat here so either come earlyĀ Ā  or maybe come during the day when it is quiet andĀ  you’ll find a place to eat but it is worth eatingĀ Ā

Here very very delicious but it’s not the onlyĀ  food in this little Christmas Market so let’sĀ Ā  go have a look and see what else we can findĀ  guys there are plenty more videos coming fromĀ Ā

Madeira on this channel so subscribe and hit theĀ  Bell button so you never miss a video but if youĀ Ā  want to see more from Christmas in Funchal andĀ  join me on the 23rd of December for a livestream Christmas Markets and alcohol obviously goĀ  hand in hand and this one is no exceptionĀ Ā

You have poncha everywhere actually MadeiraĀ  wine beer liquors and considering we justĀ Ā  tried some Poncha I think I want to show youĀ  something a little bit different and somethingĀ Ā  with which to be honest I didn’t expect toĀ  find in Madeira cider who would have thoughtĀ Ā

In Madeira a local made cider and one whichĀ  is pretty good Award winning cider I’ll tellĀ Ā  you a little more about it when we get it butĀ  you have two types you have the standard ciderĀ Ā

For €1 pretty good value I’d say or you haveĀ  hot cider which I know is mulled cider likeĀ Ā  you have mulled wine in the UK so that is whatĀ  we’re going to get perfect for Christmas time

You have to try famous pastry in Madeira andĀ  they have a little store here I’ve never seenĀ Ā  these guys before and they look pretty goodĀ  I must say what is your name by the way so myĀ Ā

Name is Miguel Miguel Miguel was just tellingĀ  me they are very new at the minute only onlineĀ Ā  orders but soon in the future maybe you’ll getĀ  to see them in a little physical shop they lookĀ Ā  amazing of course you have the original flavorĀ  but look at this you have lemon the passionĀ Ā

Fruit Nutella strawberry and egg haven’tĀ  really seen different flavors of QueijadaĀ Ā  before but I told you they look amazing lookĀ  at this look at this could be like a boutiqueĀ Ā  lined up here anyway Miguel which one do youĀ  recommend sure passion fruit or lemon veryĀ Ā

Nice which one which one is better well forĀ  you okay passion fruit okay all right we’reĀ Ā  going to be greedy and we’re going to get twoĀ  we’re going to get the passion fruit and the original all right guys I’ve got my twoĀ  Queijadas and the hot cider I thought theyĀ Ā

Go well together and it’s Christmas so why notĀ  the Queijada I’m not really sure which one toĀ Ā  try first the passion fruit or the originalĀ  but I guess the original is what I’ve kind ofĀ Ā  got a benchmark towards so we should go withĀ  the original first if you do not know what aĀ Ā

Queijada is there’s a sweet pastry typicalĀ  in Madeira but made with cheese as well soĀ Ā  sounds interesting it is delicious I’ve hadĀ  them before I filmed them before but theseĀ Ā  ones look particularly good very dainty asĀ  you can see so just break it open oh look at

That wow that there might be one of the bestĀ  Queijada I have ever had the cheese or theĀ Ā  cheesiness is perfect sometimes you get QueijadaĀ  and they’re just too sweet you just taste allĀ Ā  sugar but here you get the acidity really comingĀ  through from the cheese balance so nicely withĀ Ā

The sugar it’s not claggy it’s light and thenĀ  the pastry on the bottom there is pastry on theĀ Ā  bottom if you can see the pastry has a crunch wowĀ  that is incredible all right wash it down with aĀ Ā

Hot cider I’m looking forward to this I went toĀ  University in the southwest of England where wellĀ Ā  it’s cider country and hot cider is going to be aĀ  memory of being at University a long time ago nowĀ Ā

I must admit but this one just from the smell youĀ  can smell the cinnamon you can smell the staresĀ Ā  it’s got fennel in there bit of lemon zest GingerĀ  and uh yeah I’ve already tried the cider before IĀ Ā

Know the cider is good quality but I haven’tĀ  tried the hot one so let’s let’s give it a taste that that is delicious again like the Queijada not sweet but theĀ  intensity of those spices and he took soĀ Ā

Much care put the herbs in spritzed in aĀ  bit of lemon zest cut up the ginger andĀ Ā  obviously if you’re starting with good ciderĀ  you’re going to get a good hot cider yeah ifĀ Ā  anything is making me feel Christmasy otherĀ  than the beautiful lights it’s the hot ciderĀ Ā

Onto the passion fruit Queijada Madeira isĀ  famous for passion fruit you get passionĀ Ā  fruit everywhere passion fruit poncha isĀ  very famous of course but I’ve never seenĀ Ā  passion fruit Queijada you can just seeĀ  by the little seeds on top just a littleĀ Ā

Reminder and the color it’s more yellow thanĀ  the original Queijada you can see it is madeĀ Ā  with real passion fruit so yeah I don’t reallyĀ  know what to expect from this one let’s try it m wow the original is great the passionĀ  fruit is very very good didn’t expect suchĀ Ā

A hit of passion fruit you can taste theĀ  passion fruit puree on top but look it’sĀ Ā  fantastic it’s delicious but if I must chooseĀ  between the two I’m choosing the original atĀ Ā  the end of the day that’s my memory of QueijadaĀ  and I think this one goes to number one in myĀ Ā

Queijada list look out for them he gave me aĀ  hint he said they’re going to have a littleĀ Ā  food truck down on the front by the MadanĀ  flag in Praca do Povo coming soon don’t miss

It I can think of nothing better after QueijadaĀ  and hot cider sweet hot cider than having a porkĀ Ā  sandwich but here we are we’re in the ChristmasĀ  Market and there’s a little bit more room left andĀ Ā  I really did want to show you this sandwichĀ  Carne Vinha d’Alhos or pork garlic and wineĀ Ā

Sandwich look how amazing that looks slow cookĀ  pork sandwich with garlic with wine amazing and IĀ Ā  didn’t catch it on video but she then pours over aĀ  little bit of that liquor the cooking liquor intoĀ Ā  the sandwich another one you just know is goingĀ  to be tasting very typical this time of yearĀ Ā

You see it being sold everywhere and it’s veryĀ  famous at these Christmas markets anyway smells amazing that that is incredible normally WellĀ  normally I eat these at festivals there’sĀ Ā  festivals all over the island and they’re alwaysĀ  selling these my one complaint with them is evenĀ Ā

Though I order them every single time is thatĀ  they’re too salty this one is perfect you get theĀ Ā  acidity from the wine that it’s been cooked in butĀ  that pork it’s so soft it’s melt in the mouth it’sĀ Ā

Porky and then the garlic flavor comes throughĀ  just at the end perfect in that soft bun justĀ Ā  to soak it all up it’s so so good and my favoriteĀ  part other than the fact that the Christmas treeĀ Ā

Matches my jumper of course is that it has littleĀ  bits of the pork skin in there that have justĀ Ā  gone soft and gelatinous right can’t leave theĀ  market on something Savory can we something sweetĀ Ā  something alcoholic just to finish it off beforeĀ  we go and check out the Christmas lights let’s

Go all right last thing before going to checkĀ  out the lights Ginja or Gijinha if you’ve beenĀ Ā  to Lisbon famous in Lisbon also popular in MaderaĀ  especially at Christmas time Cherry lure and toĀ Ā  be honest guys I’m not the biggest fan of liquorsĀ  I’m not the biggest fan of strong alcohol so forĀ Ā

Me if you’re going to have ginger the chocolateĀ  may as well be good and you’re not going to getĀ Ā  better chocolate than wow cacao in MadeiraĀ  fantastic chocolate it’s been in the videoĀ Ā  before but the concept here is the ginger or theĀ  Cure goes into the chocolate cup and yeah it’s an

All-in-one just well obviously burstsĀ  in your mouth the chocolate it’s suchĀ Ā  good quality it balances so nicelyĀ  with that Ginger that strong but notĀ Ā  too strong Cherry lure the perfectĀ  way to finish this little food tourĀ Ā  around the market anyway as promisedĀ  guys let’s go check out the lights

Okay guys I cannot think of a better placeĀ  to come to finish this video than here in theĀ Ā  a Praca Do Povo right next to the huge ChristmasĀ  tree and of course it’s Christmas after all a bagĀ Ā

Of roasted chestnuts you can get them all alongĀ  the Waterfront down here in Funchal and I justĀ Ā  couldn’t resist even though I’ve eaten so muchĀ  food it’s been so fun coming out and showingĀ Ā  you the Christmas lights here in Funchal and theĀ  Christmas Market I hope you enjoyed it FunchalĀ Ā

Really is so so Charming at this time of year andĀ  for me after a year in Asia it’s so nice to comeĀ Ā  somewhere where I feel a little bit festiveĀ  well a little bit festive very festive I hopeĀ Ā

You have a fantastic Christmas if I don’t see youĀ  beforehand and if you do want to join me for moreĀ Ā  don’t forget to come to the live stream on theĀ  23rd of December where we’ll hang out togetherĀ Ā

And look around a little bit deeper but for meĀ  I’m going to enjoy my chestnuts take care guys

  2. Your channel reminds me of my last year, was in Funchal at Christmas last year and it feels like all the Christmas stalls are exactly the same! It's really nice to have Christmas somewhere where it's actually warm and still very festive. Watched your video on MadMarket which was a great recommendation. And then went to Taipei straight afterwards too for NYE! Great content.

  3. So well done mate, Funchal Christmas Market, nothing like it here in the States 😢. Lapinha was a beautiful set, wow. Hope to catch you on the livestream on the 23rd.

Also, is it cold in December?
