東京散歩:レトロ商店街と夕焼けだんだんの街、谷中

Hello! This time I’m going to take a walk in the retro spots around Nippori. Taken on January 5, 2024 around 16:00 Subtitles explain the spots along the way. Please turn it on or off if you like. First, I will go from the Ueno Park Grand Fountain to Yanaka Ginza!

I am now walking along the “Art Walk” in Ueno Park. The work selected for the Tokyo Governor’s Prize from among the graduation works of Tokyo University of the Arts is on display Yes, the Tokyo University of the Arts is located just around the corner.

The University of the Arts is a very difficult university, said to be more difficult than the University of Tokyo. The multiple ratio is more than 19 times for the most popular faculties. I wouldn’t be accepted even if I wasted a thousand years…

So this time, I’m going to take a walk on a peaceful course where you can enjoy art, retro shopping streets, and sunsets! The former Tokyo Music School Sogakudo, an important cultural asset. Japan’s oldest Western-style music hall where concerts are still held today.

You can also take a tour inside. Note that it is open only on certain days of the week! Heading through Ueno Park to our destination, Yanaka Ginza. Tokyo University of the Arts.

The video only shows the right side of the street, but the left side of this area is also the site of Tokyo University of the Arts. The site is large enough to house 14 departments in 2 faculties

The organization is complex because there are so many departments… I was getting dizzy looking at the organization chart on the official website… By the way, if you go to the west (left side of the video) from here, you will find the University of Tokyo, the highest university in Japan

The famous Red Gate is also there, but it is a bit far to go on foot. This time I walk straight to Yanaka Ginza This is where I enter the area called Yanaka A slightly retro residential area with many tasteful stores A house with amazing wall color.

This is the “Old Yoshidaya Sake Shop. It is an attached exhibition hall of the Shitamachi Museum of Folklore This is the relocated “Yoshidaya” which has been a liquor store for generations since the Edo period… Materials related to alcoholic beverages of the time are displayed indoors. You can visit for free!

The building on the left is a gallery space for contemporary art. SCAI THE BATHHOUSE A gallery converted from a 200-year-old public bathhouse that hosts a variety of exhibitions You can enjoy modern art in an old-fashioned building in a retro town, but it is on winter vacation on this day! Too bad!

So I continue on to Yanaka Ginza. There are many cafes around here. By the way, on the left is an area where several temples stand, including Saishoji Temple and Tahoin Temple It’s a peaceful area where art and temples gather in a retro townscape! This road takes you into Yanaka Cemetery.

A huge cemetery where many famous people are buried, including Prince Yoshinori Tokugawa and Eiichi Shibusawa The public can come and go as they please, and take a leisurely stroll around the very quiet grounds. I decided on this walk based on a book…

In that book, it introduces a course that runs through Yanaka Cemetery… I thought, “It would indeed be a bad idea to photograph the cemetery…” So I decided to take a picture of the cemetery. I had to change the course drastically to shoot the video.

By the way, the cemetery is very quiet and a nice place to visit during the cherry blossom season when it is crowded with cherry blossom viewers! OJIZOSAN Come to think of it, there are a lot of masonry stores around here. Only in a town with many Yanaka cemeteries and large temples

I was just saying that, and then I immediately saw a place like that There were many foreign tourists who came to see the retro cityscape and temples Now the sun is setting, so I am heading to our destination quickly! So many temples!

The building in front of me is a kindergarten & elementary school. Amazing buildings… It’s a local hot spring. Strangely comforting to find in a retro town. I turn here and go further into the local town As expected, there is a convenience store, but almost no chain stores up to this point!

It’s a peaceful town with few cars passing by. Amazing apartments……! I am approaching Yanaka Ginza, but first, Yomise-dori Is this going to be another shopping street? Stores that look like they’ve been around for a long time are lined up here. I have arrived at Yanaka Ginza

A shopping street with about 60 stores lining a road less than 170 meters long Sundries, groceries, books, apparel, electronics, crafts, sweets specialty stores, etc… A shopping street with a history of nearly 80 years, crowded with stores of various genres! And most of the stores are local, not chain stores!

There were many foreign tourists, perhaps attracted by the retro atmosphere and unique stores. It was impressive that there were few so-called “izakaya” (Japanese style pubs) Since this day was after New Year’s and in the evening, many stores were closed… I guess it is usually more crowded

There are so many different kinds of stores, it’s hard to keep your eyes open. That’s it for Yanaka Ginza. It was a fun place with many different stores! And the stairs you see in front of you is our final destination this time!

This is the famous “Yuyake Dandan” where you can see beautiful sunsets. The retro Yanaka Ginza is popular for its sunset glow, and there were many people trying to get a photo opportunity on this day as well. So please enjoy a little of the sunset!

This is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset fall on the gentle stairs and retro shopping street like this… It’s also a place where locals frequently come and go, so I thought it would be disturbing to take pictures in the same spot for a long time…

I’m going to leave early so as not to disturb them too much! This area is close to Nippori station, but continues to be dotted with charming retro stores! So I head towards our goal, Nippori station. Still many temples and shrines I have arrived at Nippori station!

So that’s it for my walk from Ueno Park to Nippori! Please subscribe to my channel! And don’t forget to like the video! Also, please comment if you have any requests. Thank you for watching to the end! Please watch my next video!
