From this time, we will be traveling through the villages and towns of Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture, which is famous as a World Natural Heritage Site. The first part is the northern part of Yakushima, which corresponds to the former Kamiyaku Town. Hello. Today, I came to Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture. The mountains visible in the background are the mountains of Yakushima, including Kyushu’s highest peak, Mt. Miyanoura, which is 1,936 meters high. Now, let’s move on to the Yakushima edition of Walking through the Villages of the Sea. Let’s start a trip around Yakushima.

This river is Miyanoura River. The bridge you can see over there is Miyanoura River Bridge. The current prefectural road runs beyond that, but the old bridge remains. The road that goes around the island was a long-awaited road for the islanders. It is said that it took 43 years to build.

Although it is a reinforced concrete bridge, it has a polished finish that shows the aggregate gravel, giving it the appearance of a stone structure. “Kumamoto Forestry Bureau” is written on the main pillar on the east side. There is snow on the mountain.

The climate is completely different between the north and south sides of the island. It’s like Honshu’s Japan Sea side and Pacific Ocean side, with the north side having a Japanese coastal climate and the south side having a Pacific coast climate.

So, it’s cold and overcast in Miyanoura today, but if you go south, you’ll probably find the sun shining warmly. If you go around the island one after another, I think you will be able to understand the difference in climate between the north and the south.

This road is an old road that extended westward from Miyanoura River Bridge. This vacant lot is where the Yakushima Magistrate’s Office was located during the Edo period. When I see stone walls and hedges like this, I think it’s Satsuma. The structure of the mansion is similar to Chiran or Satsuma’s samurai village “Rokumura”.

It’s a nice building. It’s called “Former Goya Kuei Forest Police Station.” That’s a nice design. The construction (shape) of all houses seems to be the same. It’s the same whether it’s a one-story building with vertical boards, or a gabled one-story building.

I don’t know what’s new or what’s old, but I see a lot of houses with similar shapes. A cobblestone stone wall and a trimmed hedge. It’s typical of Satsuma, isn’t it? This stonework is nice. It is piled up with cobblestones (Gorota stones) collected from riverbeds or beaches.

There’s something at the end of the T-junction! “Ishiganto” is a talisman! Like Okinawa, it is also influenced by Chinese culture. Cross Prefectural Route 77 and walk along Yaku Shrine towards the sea. The Kagoshima Bank and the Minami Nippon Bank are located here, so this is probably the center of commerce.

However, as you can see, there is a snack shop. From here it’s the snack town. This is my favorite snack town (restaurant town at night). I like this alley! Would you like to go for a while? What does this sea cucumber wall look like? Well, I guess it’s a so-called signboard building.

That mark is probably Mitake, which includes Mt. Miyanoura. is that different? Karaoke Lounge Bar Fuji. It’s not the shape of Mt. Fuji. It must be Mitake after all. Sounds good. It’s sea! This is Yaku Shrine. Masuku Shrine Nio Statue Thank you for stopping mowing in consideration of video shooting.

Is it all roots? amazing! The shrine building was apparently severely damaged by US military bombing during World War II, and this building was later rebuilt. Now let’s worship. A ferry just left Miyanoura Port. I wonder if it’s headed for Kagoshima Port. A bird’s

-eye view of the houses below the terrace from the top of the cute Ishiganto Coast Terrace. The flat island visible across the sea is Tanegashima. During the Edo period, Ino Tadataka walked all over Japan to survey and create a map of Japan, and Yakushima was the southernmost point of Ino’s survey.

There are many stone Buddhas and stone pagodas in the Ushidoko pilgrimage area . I came to Nagata village, located in the innermost part of Kamiyaku, in the northwestern part of Yakushima. In winter, the weather in Yakushima is completely different between the north and south.

Even if it’s sunny in the south, it’s raining in the north. It’s the village at the back of the village, but there are traces of shops there. It’s a fairly large community. Ishiganto is. The tiles are fixed with plaster. The same goes for this house. It’s probably because of the strong wind.

Only this part has cobblestone pavement (why?) It’s nice that you can always hear the sound of running water. There’s a fe at this place, but it’s not open. What is this stone storehouse-like building? There are cobblestones here as well. Is it a continuation of the cobblestones from earlier?

I wonder if there’s a shrine ahead? What lies ahead? There’s a house here too. It’s an abandoned house. What’s on this? Opened! The settlement continues. The river continues too. It’s farmland. It’s a fairly large village. There is an abandoned reinforced concrete building.

What would it be used for? Was it a lodging facility? Is it an inn? This space is so cool! This is probably the remains of a mansion, but please take a look. There’s a big rock over there. The rock must have been in this place in the first place.

The neighboring Yoshida village also has huge stones like this lying around. It’s so bitter. We’re open for business. Today is Christmas. The ruined building from earlier must have looked like this. It’s an inn. The building you saw earlier must also be an inn. This is Yoshida in the northwestern part of the island.

A large rock in front of you. There are also many large rocks lying on the coast. This Yoshida village receives quite a number of tourists.

The reason is that this is the village where the main character’s house in the NHK morning drama “Manten” is located, so it was also used as a filming location. Apparently there is also something like a “village tour.” This rocky place has just appeared!

This rock was originally in this location. A house is built on top of it. A distinctive feature of this village is the huge stones lying around. And then, look. Huge stones are rolling around in the field. The rock on the left and the rock on the lower right were probably originally one rock.

It probably cracked and separated like that. This house is also built on a rock. There are rocks on the other side of the road, so this whole place was probably originally a rocky area. It was probably cut open to pass a road through. It’s a village on top of a rock.

There are many stones lying on top of this. The stone wall is overgrown. Is it a banyan tree? This house blends in with the neighboring trees. It is good, is not it? Art created by nature. Lord Ebisu is at the fork in the road. Mr. Oka Ebisu,

There is a huge stone here too! A huge rock is digging into the house. That house is also built on a rock. Walking around the seaside village This time we walked in the northern part of Yakushima. The weather is really bad.

What was your experience walking through the three villages of Nagata and Yoshida in the northwestern part of the island, starting with Miyanoura? Next time we will walk around the southern part of the island. I think the weather is probably completely different in the south. See you next time, goodbye. Miyanoura Nagata Beach Nagata
