Riding on Lisbon’s 19th-Century Funiculars 😃🚠

In this video… Lisbon’s funiculars | Portugal August 15, 2023 – 14:00 – 28 ºC Hi everyone! After the video on a traditional fishing boat, today I’m going to show you another mode of transportation: Lisbon’s historic funiculars! Avenida (avenue) 24 de Julho

This is the Ribeira Market, renamed to Time Out Market a few years ago. It used to be a traditional market for people to buy fish and fresh produce, but nowadays it’s mostly known as a modern and upmarket food hall. The original market stalls occupy about half of this landmark building.

A funicular is a type of cable railway system… …that connects points along a railway track laid on a steep slope. The result of such a configuration is that the two carriages move synchronously: as one ascends, the other descends at an equal speed. Praça (square) Dom Luis I

This feature distinguishes funiculars from inclined elevators, which have a single car that is hauled uphill. Monument to the Marquis Sá da Bandeira (1795 – 1876), the politician who abolished slavery in the former African colonies of the Portuguese empire. By then slavery had already been abolished in Portugal.

Despite the difference between funiculars and elevators, Lisbon’s funiculars are commonly called “elevators” in Portuguese. Rua (street) da Moeda Lisbon has three funiculars, all of them from the late 19th century. A forth funicular has recently been installed, the first one in almost 125 years! It should have been inaugurated in August/September,

But so far nothing has happened. As soon as the new funicular is inaugurated I will make a video about it. Here’s the first funicular. The Bica Funicular, known as Ascensor da Bica in Portuguese, and also Elevador da Bica (Bica Elevator), was inaugurated in 1892.

This funicular can carry 23 passengers, including 9 seated and 14 standing. Here we go, full speed ahead! The funicular goes up an incline of 11.8%, a distance of 245 meters (804 ft). The Bica funicular has become one of Lisbon’s most iconic tourist attractions. It’s considered Lisbon’s most picturesque funicular,

Known for its route through the narrow streets of the old Bica neighborhood. Part of the route is shared with car traffic, unlike all the other funiculars in Portugal. This neighborhood is known for its cheap and cheerful nightlife, as well as ugly graffiti everywhere!

This funicular is a good option for those who want to go to the Bairro Alto neighborhood. Rua do Loreto Bairro Alto, the most bohemian of all Lisbon’s neighborhoods. Many people assume that Lisbon’s trams and funiculars… …are just a ride that the tourists go on. While they have definitely become major attractions,

Locals still use them today, sometimes being their main transport in the city. Funiculars provide a convenient and efficient means of transportation… …between elevated and lower areas, saving people from having to climb Lisbon’s steep hills… …or navigate challenging terrain on foot. Praça Luís de Camões

If you’re enjoying the video, please hit the “Like” button, thank you! The square is a popular meeting point and social hub. It is surrounded by cafes, shops, and theaters, making it a lively area where locals and tourists alike gather. Rua da Misericórdia

All of Lisbon’s funiculars were designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard (1848 – 1914), a Portuguese engineer of French parentage. In the early 1900’s there were 6 funicular systems in Lisbon, but 3 of them were dismantled between 1901 and 1913. Lisbon’s topography is characterized by hills separated by valleys where, in the past,

Streams flowed towards the Tagus River. Those streams are now underground. Lisbon is known as the city of the seven hills, but there are more than seven hills. Largo (square) Trindade Coelho Do you recognize this church? São Roque Church (Saint Roch), built in the 16th century. It is famous for one of its chapels,

The Chapel of St. John the Baptist, considered one of the most opulent and expensive chapels in the world. I filmed this church for the video about Bairro Alto, the link is in the description below. Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara

The Glória Funicular, known as Ascensor da Glória or Elevador da Glória in Portuguese, was inaugurated in 1885. The Glória Funicular is the most popular funicular in Lisbon, providing a short but steep ride between downtown and the Bairro Alto neighborhood. Initially it used a water-powered counterweight system,

Which was replaced with a steam-powered mechanism a year later. Nowadays power is provided by electric motors on the two cars, which are themselves powered through an overhead wire The route is 265 meters (869 ft) long, and this street has an average incline of 17.7%, one of the steepest in Lisbon. Praça dos Restauradores

Avenida da Liberdade This is Lisbon’s main boulevard, known for its high-end shops, luxury boutiques, and international designer brands. It is a prime shopping destination for those looking for upscale fashion, jewelry, and other luxury goods. Largo da Anunciada The Lavra Funicular, known as Ascensor do Lavra or Elevador do Lavra in Portuguese,

Is the oldest and least touristy funicular in Lisbon. It was inaugurated in 1884. The Lavra funicular transports passengers up and down this steep hill, the average grade is 22.9% (!) and the total distance is 188 meters (617 ft). 22.9%! Less well-known and less crowded than the other funiculars in Lisbon,

The Lavra funicular is a great alternative to the other two, if you want to try this peculiar mode of transportation…. …and explore different parts of the city. These are real vintage funicular cars, not modern ones made to look old. Let’s return to the starting point of the video!

These funiculars go through historical and residential neighborhoods, offering passengers interesting views of the surrounding areas during the short journeys. We’re back at the Glória Funicular. And finally the Bica Funicular. We’ve just been informed that there’s a problem with the system, and the funicular is out of service for the time being.

So I’ll walk down the hill. Problems like these are to be expected from time to time, it’s all part of the charm of a 140-year-old mode of transportation. Rua da Bica de Duarte Melo The funicular is not carrying passengers. If you could,

What would you do to the people who vandalize everything with their ugly graffiti? I would hunt them down and give them a taste of medieval justice! If you’d like to support the channel visit: BuyMeACoffee.com/POVTours I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video!

  1. Amazing, well done!
I live "near" one too, in Nazaré. Probably the most dangerous in Portugal. I think … 🙂

  2. Que País lindo! Cidade maravilhosa, parabéns, pela história, pelas imagens, vc merece muitas curtidas amigo ! Boa noite ótimo final de semana 😍🎅🌲

  8. I'm sure that after this video Lavra will become the most famous too😉🙂
Thank you for another great video representing the rich Portuguese culture!🙂

  16. I really enjoy your videos. 5 years ago I visited Portugal for 10 days and went to Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Evora, Fatima, Obidos, Peniche, Almada, Mafra and Cabo da Roca. These videos make me relive those memories. In the near future maybe in the next two years I am planning to revisit Portugal and this time I go to Porto, Aviero, Coimbra, Tomar, Alcobaca, Batalha, Fatima, Sintra and Lisbon.
