This time, our host visited Hiji Town in the northeastern part of Oita Prefecture. While our hosts have visited Hiji Town several times before, this will be an even deeper dive into the town’s appeal!
Hiji Town attracts gourmands for its large catch of luxury “hamo” pike conger eel and the marbled flounder “shiroshita karei,” which grow in places where fresh water wells up at the bottom of the sea.
Visitors to Hiji Town can join combined tours with a refreshing early morning cruise all around Beppu Bay, and a stop at the Oga Fishing Port Morning Market. This Beppu Bay Fishing Boat Cruise is guided by a local fisherman, and you can choose from a time that suits you, whether morning, day, or night.

After exploring the placid Beppu Bay by fishing boat, our host headed for Oga Fishing Port, which has long prospered due to its naturally great position. Located in the Oga Fukae area, the port has a narrow entrance and deep inlet, and has been a popular stop for boats since the Edo Period. Its morning market sees fresh seafood hauled in each day to be auctioned off. While regular visitors can’t join the auction, all are welcome to watch, and seafood picked on the spot can be bought from brokers. Plus, stalls and eateries selling fresh local ingredients and meals are also open on Saturdays.
Once our host had finished enjoying the early morning fishing boat cruise and market, she made her way to Tekizanso, which is an old residence renowned for its gorgeous early modern Japanese architecture, stunning views over Beppu Bay, and magnificent garden. It was once the home of Hiroe Narikiyo, who made a fortune in the Bajo Kinzan goldmineーhis last attempt at success after numerous failures in the coal and gold mining businesses.
Here you can enjoy Japanese-style cuisine made with fresh Hiji Town fish, mountain vegetables, and more, including the aforementioned shiroshita karei and pike conger eel, plus the highly coveted seki-aji and seki-saba fish, as well as pufferfish, Bungo beef, and more. With such an active and early start, our host was more than pleased to be able to rest up and relish a delicious lunch. There was no end to her amazement at the lineup of exquisitely arranged traditional “kappo” style dishes. After eating, be sure to take a walk around the garden, and gaze upon its breathtaking beauty with Beppu Bay and Mount Takasaki in the background.
