A River Cruise South of Lisbon: Seixal to Barreiro
In this video… Tagus river cruise, south of Lisbon May 27, 2023 – 3:00 pm – 26 ºC / 79 ºF Hi everyone! Today we’re going for a quick cruise on the Tagus River! This is the “Baía do Seixal” (Seixal Bay), a traditional fishing boat built in 1895.
It has been used as a tourist boat since the 1990s. Here we go! We are departing from the city of Seixal, on the southern bank of the Tagus River (Tejo in Portuguese). These traditional boat trips are run by Seixal City Council. Lisbon is situated on the northern bank of the river,
Near its mouth where the Tagus meets the Atlantic Ocean, but we will not be visiting Lisbon today. We’re heading to the city of Barreiro, also on the southern bank of the river, and then we will return to Seixal. Portugal – Spain Seixal – Barreiro – Lisbon
Both Seixal and Barreiro are part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. I’ve already made videos about these cities, the one in Barreiro was particularly controversial, due to its title. The video was titled “Barreiro: The Ugliest City in Portugal (allegedly)” The links to those videos are in the description below.
Lisbon on the other side of the river. The Tagus River is very wide here, near its mouth. The April 25 Bridge, it spans the Tagus River, connecting Lisbon with the municipality of Almada on the south side. The Tagus River is crossed by ferries connecting Lisbon with several cities on the southern bank,
Including Seixal and Barreiro. These ferries are part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area’s public transport system. This one is going to Barreiro Here comes the wave! The Barreiro river terminal Up until 1969 there was a railway bridge here, connecting Barreiro to Seixal. Unfortunately, a ship on its way to “Siderurgia Nacional”,
A huge steel mill complex nearby, hit the bridge and destroyed a large part of it. Siderurgia Nacional Was the accident premeditated? I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but… I can’t say what I really think for legal reasons. The year before the accident… …there were calls to dismantle the bridge and the railway line that used it, due to high maintenance costs… …and because the bridge caused problems to the ships heading to the steel mill complex. The former Barreiro railway station. This station operated between 1884 and 2008,
Serving as an interface between the various rail services south of the Tagus… …and the river ferries to Lisbon. The three Alburrica windmills, built in 1852. All these diesel ferries will soon be replaced by brand new all-electric ferries. The journey from Barreiro to Lisbon takes about 25 minutes.
The terminal in Lisbon is located in downtown, at Praça do Comércio, the city’s main square. All these boats were named after famous Portuguese writers. The Seixal river terminal In the 1920s there was a plan to build a railway bridge here, you can still see one of the pillars.
It would have been part of the same railway line as the other bridge that was destroyed. The plan was abandoned in the early 1930s. The bridge that should have been built here… …was repurposed and rebuilt in the city of Alcácer do Sal, where it still stands.
Alcacér do Sal is located about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Seixal, and I will visit it in 2024, it’s very picturesque. Due to much lower property costs compared to Lisbon, but with quick access to Portugal’s capital, Seixal is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
The old Seixal river terminal was located here, when the municipality had a much smaller population than it does today. Seixal has become especially popular with Swedish and French expats, as well as Portuguese families escaping the high prices of Lisbon. BEAUTIFUL PORTUGAL 🇵🇹❤️♠️♠️👑👑💎💎🇪🇺🇪🇺
WOW! This would be awesome! I will make time to sail on the river while I'm in Lisbon. Thanks for the great video.
Great video, Miguel. The boat ride on the waters of the Tagus reminded me of the epic, philosophical novel, “Moby Dick”, written by Herman Melville. As you may know, Melville’s novel probably represents the one and only contribution to world literature by a U.S. author. The novel’s epic adventure sets sail from Nantucket, a small island located off the coast of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts peninsula. And the first paragraph of Chapter One, which is titled “Loomings”, reads as follows” “Call me Ishmael. Some years ago – never mind how long precisely – having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off, then I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, sometime or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.”
I quote the first paragraph of the novel because I suspect that it was the same feelings that Ishmael, the novel’s protagonist, felt which caused some Portuguese explorers to dare leave the safety of Portugal’s solid, dry ground beneath their feet. Of course, what haunted the Portuguese explorers was “saudade” for their homeland and the families they had left behind. As you may recall, if you have read “Moby Dick”, the melancholy protagonist in the novel is Captain Ahab, who commands the ship. I mention this because when I saw the river ferry that appears at about minute 5:45 of the video, “looming” like a white, giant sea creature when compared to the small boat you and the other passengers were on, I imagined it to be the huge White Whale (Moby Dick) that in the novel haunts the psyche of Captain Ahab, the ship’s commander, whose life obsession was killing Moby Dick for ripping from his body the leg he had to substitute with a crudely-sculptured piece of wood.
Gostei, sim, do passeio! 🤔
Como são grandes os barcos (ferries)! E bonitos.
I love Portugal ❤❤❤

O meio ambiente agradece. Sucesso ao canal!
Olá Miguel, Bom Dia!!
Obrigada!! I could watch this over and over (and I have watched it a few times)… It's lovely. I remember your walking tour in the area. I love the water, and I love ferry/boat rides.
I must say, the ferries they have (named after the famous Portuguese writers) are really quite something! They look to be much more modern than ones I've seen here (not here in Ottawa, we don't have ferries we just have bridges), but in other places in North America.
Fun fact, I know in Peniche (and probably any other decent size town in Portugal, there is Rua Garrett. I thought it was lovely how they were naming roads after Garrett McNamara… until I discover that it's actually Almeida Garrett, famous poet, novelist and politician. 🙄
p.s. I keep meaning to ask… what are those dark things swimming in the water, close to where you docked?
🛥 I hope you are having a wonderful Saturday. xo
Those ferries look fast.
When I was there they had the older blue and white ones that took about 35 minutes. I still remember the names of them! All named after regions of Portugal. ( Tras os Montes was my favorite for some reason 😂)
