こんな変わった物が長崎にあります!観光前にちょっと寄り道。長崎観光の定番を散策する旅 Nagasaki Walking Tour Part 2 Popular sightseeing spots!
Hi everyone! Some people ridicule Nagasaki for being full of… saka (slopes), haka (cemeteries) and baka (fools.) The 3rd one isn’t true! Nagasaki has many smart and kind people. I love this city! Let’s check out the slopes here! Two sets of staircases. There’s an interesting device up the hill.
Let’s see. There are many places like this that are accessible only on foot. Delivery people are “heroes” in Nagasaki. This is hard! I am out of breath after climbing these steps. Can you imagine how hard it is for seniors and pregnant ladies?
This is the device built by the city for them. Maybe only Nagasaki has this. Slope Transportation System This system requires advance registration. You need a special card to use it. I’ve heard most of the people don’t use it unless they are seniors, pregnant or injured.
There are two other such systems in the city. Today, I visited this one called, “Tenjin-kun.” Next, a double arch stone bridge that looks like eyeglasses with its reflection. The atomic bomb was supposed to be dropped over this bridge, if some clouds hadn’t blocked the view from the B-29 bomber.
This is Nakashima River, which has many historic stone bridges. I see many students on a field trip! Fukuro Bridge is the best place to view “Spectacles Bridge.” Tah dah! If you can’t see the reflection due to the ripples, you should wait for the wind to die down.
There’s more to see around the bridge. Check it out! My uncle also made this statue. I love this one because I can feel his gentleness in this work. I’m going to look for a heart-shaped stone. Ladies: “Can’t find it.” L: “OK? Are we giving up?”
Me: “A heart shaped stone?” It’s over there! M: “Over there!” L: “Thank you! But over there?” Sorry about my vague direction! We’re all looking for the stone. L:”Not yet?” M:”Not yet, I guess. Maybe, near those girls.” L: “Found it!” M: “Found it?” L: “Found it!” M:”Indeed!” L: “So glad!”
M: “This is actually “I.” L: “Oh, I see!” L: “I love!” L: “Thank you very much!” This is “I,” and this is the heart. Isn’t it amazing! There are koi/carps swiming in the river! This street, Nakadoori, is just one block from Spectacles Bridge.
It still has the “Showa-era” (till 1988) atmosphere. If you were born in Japan before 1988, you’ll know. Younger people may feel this place is just old, but I like the “retro” feeling. This commercial street was established in 1625. It will be 400 years old in 2025!
It’s the oldest commercial street in Nagasaki, it will take you to the major shopping area known as Hamanomachi Arcade. People in Nagasaki love to stroll in this arcade. They call this stroll “Hama-Bura.” Next, Nagasaki Chinatown!
San Francisco has a much larger Chinatown, but this one is the closest to China. Sorry about the wind noise! Let’s go! That’s the Chinese gate. Finally arrived in Chinatown! I’m getting tired. Are we ready? So many people!
“Yoriyori” is sold here. It’s twisted and fried dough, and so hard! I may break a tooth if I eat it! Castella (super-moist sponge cake) is also sold here. I wanted to have Champon noodle soup, but it’s now too late for me to have lunch. “Yoriyori” again!
Man: “They also sell soft yoriyori.” Me: “Is that so?” Soft yoriyori available! I don’t have to worry about my teeth. Xiaolongbao! Wow! Pork Belly Bun! (It’s good!) Oh, nice smell! That’s Kozanro restaurant. Lat time there, I had Champon noodle soup. Fried fish cake!
“Renka” is a store that sells Ghibli characters. Next, Dejima Island. Japan’s only “open door” to Europe for more than 200 years. This bridge leads to Dejima Island. This manmade island was the only place for foreign trade from the 17th to 19th centuries. Admission: 520 yen!
Being Japan’s only “open door” to Europe for more than 200 years, Dejima contributed greatly to the modernization of Japan. “Mini Dejima” Well-made “Mini Dejima” shows the details of Dejima in the past. “Restoration Zone” So far, 16 buildings have been restored and more restoration continues. No.16 Warehouse. No.3 Warehouse.
Let’s enter Dutch Chief Factor’s residence. 15-tatami room! This was used as the office and residence of the Chief Factor. It was also a place to entertain Japanese guests. Wow! This one is lovely! Cool! The wine looks good! Beautiful! Wow, huge! The aroma of tatami mats and wood is amazing!
Dutch ship captain’s quarter. Pretty! Don’t forget to see the view from Mt. Inasa at night! Next, we are going to Urakami district to visit atomic bomb sites and to contemplate world peace. Thank you very much for watching! See you next time!
