KYIV: Night ride through the city streets before curfew / Virtual city tour in December 2023

In early December 2023, on the 646th day of Russian aggression against Ukraine, we will walk along the night streets of Kyiv to see the nightlife of Ukraine’s capital. It’s 10pm and the curfew is about to start.

During martial law in Ukraine, Kyiv is subject to a curfew that lasts from 00:00 to 05:00. During this time, it is forbidden to be on the streets or in public places, or to travel by car or on foot without a special permit.

The only reason to go out is to get to the nearest shelter in case of an air raid. Therefore, just before the curfew, the streets of the city begin to empty and the number of cars decreases significantly. People are in a hurry to get home before the curfew starts.

It is also important to note the light masking mode. This means that the lighting on the road is dimmed and less bright. Since the beginning of 2017, Kyiv has been modernising its street lighting system. The old lanterns are being replaced with new light-emitting diode (LED) lamps,

Which are much more energy efficient. In total, 42,766 luminaires, 12,912 poles and more than 805 kilometres of cables are being replaced. Utilities are replacing old sodium and mercury lamps with Ukrainian-made LEDs. LEDs are highly energy efficient, reducing electricity consumption by 70%.

The new lamps have a long life (up to 10 years warranty). There is also a system that allows you to adjust the intensity of the lighting, reducing it from 100% to 30%. This function is used during curfews when it is necessary to reduce the brightness of the city’s lighting.

For street lighting, it is advisable to use luminaires with a colour temperature of no more than 3000 Kelvin. Anything above that is blue, which has a negative impact on both the natural environment and human vision. The colour of light also has an effect on a person’s psycho-emotional state – for sleeping areas,

It is best to choose warm light colours as they create a feeling of comfort, cosiness and peace. Scientists do not recommend combining several light colours at the same time, as this creates visual noise that tires the psyche, distracts the occupant’s attention and leads to disorientation.

If lamps are too powerful, there is too much light, which can cause glare and dazzle. A person who is blinded may not notice potential hazards and may be injured. Inappropriate artificial lighting can have a detrimental effect on nature.

It disrupts the daily cycles of nocturnal birds and insects, which can lead to the death of certain species. This disrupts the ecosystem. It also has a negative effect on trees, which function better when insects are around.

It is therefore important to limit lighting in green areas, parks, where there is a lot of biodiversity. Lighting parks at night only makes sense in transit areas, such as paths and walkways. Light should not be directed onto tree branches or green areas.

Night lighting in Kyiv has therefore undergone significant modernisation in recent years and is gradually switching to LED lamps, which are more energy efficient. Such measures help to create more comfortable conditions for the city’s residents,

Ensure safety on the streets and contribute to the preservation of the environment by reducing the negative impact on nature and wildlife at night.
