Harajuku Tokyo Street Food Tour / Japan Travel Food Vlog

The Ultimate Harajuku Guide! 38 Recommended Foods! Hi, I’m Samurai Junjiro. Hi, I’m Akanemaru. This video is about street foods in Harajuku. We’ll introduce 38 foods including popular Japanese sweets and trendy sweets on social media. We’ll also introduce many stores not featured on other YouTube channels, so please watch until the end!

Now, let’s get started! We have arrived at Harajuku Station. This time, we’ll introduce these 4 areas. By the way, shops in Harajuku have slightly later opening hours compared to other tourist spots. It’s recommended to come around 12 PM. Alright, let’s head to the first area. First up is the Omotesando area.

We’ll introduce 5 shops from here. Let’s start with BPC donuts. It’s a donut specialty shop opened in July 2023 by a popular café in Osaka. There are over 10 types, but this time, we’ll particularly recommend two of them. First up, we’ll have the cream-filled donut.

The dough of the donut in this shop is fermented slowly.  It has a chewy and fluffy texture. Inside, it’s filled with cream. It has a pleasant aroma of vanilla beans. It’s not too sweet and has a natural sweetness of milk. The next donut is filled with pistachio cream.

The rich flavor of pistachio spreads in your mouth. It has plenty of cream, but the texture is light,  so you could easily eat several of them. We also highly recommend trying the chocolate cream and strawberry cream donuts, so be sure to give them a try! Next up is this shop, GODIVA dessert Harajuku.

It opened in July 2023. You can enjoy popular crepes in Harajuku, along with the classic chocolate drinks from GODIVA. This time, we chose a waffle that is just the right size for food tour. It’s topped with chocolate chips and warmed, so it has a pleasant aroma.

The outside is crispy and the inside is fluffy. There are chocolate chips inside the batter, giving it a nice texture. The next store is “niko and…” It’s a popular clothing store for both men and women, offering casual wear. This store has a café inside, bustling with lots of people.

This time, we’ll introduce 2 popular breads from this café. First up, we’ll have the egg bread. The bread from this shop is thick and large,  but it’s fluffy, giving it a light texture. The dough has a subtle sweetness of milk.

The eggs are mixed with mayonnaise, so the texture is creamy and melt-in-your-mouth. It’s nice that it’s an affordable price. The next one is the yakisoba bread. It’s filled with plenty of yakisoba, which is stir-fried noodles with sauce. The combination of the richly flavored yakisoba and the bread is perfect.

The crunchy texture and spiciness of the red pickled ginger add a nice accent. It has an authentic taste that you wouldn’t expect from bread sold by a clothing brand. Next up is colombin. It’s a sweets shop founded in 1924, and it reopened at this location in April 2023.

There are various sweets, but this time we’ll have the popular item called “Harajuku bûche.” It’s filled with cream inside the cookie dough, which is made with ingredients like butter and eggs. The crunchy texture of the dough is addictive. Inside, there is chocolate cream. The aroma of cocoa and subtle bitterness is nice.

It’s a dessert with an elegant taste that is not too sweet. Next up is Gonpachi NORI-TEMAKI. It’s a specialty shop for Temaki sushi,  hand-rolled sushi opened in 2018. At the counter seats, the chefs make hand-rolled sushi right in front of you. We’ll have 4 popular Temaki for takeout.

The takeout menu from this shop is designed so that the seaweed doesn’t get soggy  due to the moisture from the rice. You can enjoy a crispy texture, just like it’s freshly made, even at home or in your hotel.  The takeout menu comes with wasabi and soy sauce.  The crispy texture is amazing!

This Temaki includes tuna and avocado. The combination of fatty tuna and creamy avocado is excellent! The next one is an eel and cucumber Temaki. The eel is tender and the sweet sauce goes well with the rice. The texture of the cucumber adds a nice accent. The filling of this one is meat.

The beef, which is simmered with soy sauce and sugar, has a sweet and rich flavor. It has just the right amount of fat and is delicious. The last one is salmon and salmon roe. There is plenty of salmon roe, almost spilling over. The salmon is fatty and melts in your mouth.

It’s great to easily enjoy fresh seafood. Now, let’s move on to the next area. Next up is Cat Street, located about an 8-minute walk from Harajuku Station. Let’s start with this shop, THE MATCHA TOKYO. It’s a specialty shop for matcha that opened in March 2023.

The matcha at this shop uses only organic tea leaves. There are various menu items, but this time we’ll introduce 2 highly recommended options. First, we’ll have the matcha soft serve ice cream. It has a nice aroma of matcha. There is a subtle bitterness with just the right amount of sweetness.

The crispy texture of the brown sugar matcha powder adds a nice accent. There is black syrup inside the cone, giving it a pleasant aroma and a subtle sweetness. It’s soft serve with an elegant taste. Next up is the matcha castella.

It’s a special menu collaboration with a castella specialty shop called Kurofune. It has a nice aroma and is moist and fluffy. It doesn’t have the bitterness of matcha but offers the sweetness of milk and eggs. The size is small, so it’s easy to eat.

Next up is WaraTako, a takoyaki specialty shop located about a minute’s walk from THE MATCHA TOKYO.  We’ll introduce the 2 most popular takoyaki from this shop.  Let’s start with the 2nd most popular item. It’s a classic flavor topped with sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes.

The takoyaki at this shop is cooked without using oil, giving it a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The octopus is cut into larger pieces, giving it a nice texture. The next one we’ll have is the most popular takoyaki. It’s topped with green onion, salt sauce, and mayonnaise. It has a nice aroma of garlic.

The spiciness and texture of the green onion add a nice accent. It tastes just as authentic as the takoyaki in Osaka. The next place is The Little BAKERY Tokyo. It’s a bakery that opened in 2017 and is a popular shop bustling with many people.

The breads are also recommended, but this time we’ll have the donut. It’s coated with strawberry and lemon-flavored sugar on top of the dough. You can taste the texture of the strawberry and the refreshing tartness of the lemon. The texture of the dough is light and fluffy.

The strawberry has a subtle tartness. It’s not only cute, but it also has an authentic taste. Next up is Osushi-no-Portama. It’s a specialty shop for onigiri made with luncheon meat and eggs that opened in 2021. We’ll introduce 2 particularly recommended one from the 12 types. First, we’ll have the spicy cod roe mayonnaise onigiri.

It has a nice aroma of seaweed. It uses tamagoyaki from Marutake, which is an egg specialty store in Tsukiji. The subtle sweetness of tamagoyaki and the savory luncheon meat goes well together. The slight spiciness and texture of the spicy cod roe are a nice accent.

Next up, we’ll have the Tuna Mayonnaise Onigiri. It’s recommended for those who don’t like spicy cod roe. It’s filled with plenty of tuna mayonnaise, and the texture is creamy.  It uses vinegared rice, so the aftertaste is refreshing.  It’s a highly recommended shop because it offers affordable prices and delicious food.

Next up is COCO-agepan. It’s a specialty shop for Agepan, a deep-fried fluffy bread commonly served in Japanese school lunches.  There are 8 types of flavors, but this time, we chose the classic soybean flour.  It uses soybean flour made in Japan, so it has a nice aroma.

The soybean flour sweetened with sugar goes well with the bread.  They fry it up after you order, so the outside is crispy and inside is fluffy.  The size is large, but it’s light in texture,  so it’s easy to eat even for one person.  Next, let’s introduce the Aoyama area.

First up is UMAMI BURGER. It’s a hamburger shop that originated in Los Angeles and opened in Aoyama in 2017. The interior of the restaurant is very stylish. There are over 20 types of hamburgers, but this time, we’ll introduce the most popular one.

It’s seasoned with a special sauce that blends kelp and soy sauce into a 100% beef patty. The outside of the buns is crispy and the inside is fluffy. It’s sandwiched with finely chopped shiitake mushrooms, grilled onions, and Parmesan frico, giving it a great texture.

It’s a juicy hamburger that bursts with umami in your mouth. Next up is GARIGUETTE. It’s a specialty shop for Millefeuille that opened in 2021. The Millefeuille, with fruits sandwiched between baked pastries, is particularly popular, and they make it after you order.

This time, we chose the Half & Half, which allows you to enjoy 2 flavors at once. It’s Strawberry & Custard flavor and Chestnut Cream & Blackcurrant flavor. The pastry dough of this shop uses almonds and fermented butter, giving it a nice aroma.

It has a crispy texture because it’s baked with sugar sprinkled on the surface. The subtle tartness of the strawberries  goes well with the sweet custard cream. The blackcurrants enhance the richness of the chestnut cream, giving it a refreshing and addictive flavor. It’s a luxurious Millefeuille.

Next up is PASTEL Omotesando that opened in April 2023.  It’s a dessert specialty store with over 180 branches across Japan and founded in 1984. PASTEL is particularly famous for its custard pudding, and this time, we’ll introduce a special variation exclusive to this store.

This pudding is made of two layers with different amounts of heavy cream. The baking time and ingredient amounts are adjusted based on the temperature and humidity, so you can enjoy a texture similar to a melting drink. It uses only egg yolks, so it has a rich flavor.

You can taste the natural sweetness of milk rather than the sweetness of sugar. There is the caramel sauce at the bottom and it has a subtle bitterness. The price might be a bit high, but it’s a pudding you can’t experience other stores, so it’s worth trying.

The next shop we’ll introduce is MAiSEN Aoyama. It’s a tonkatsu specialty store founded in 1965, with over 70 branches across Japan, but this Aoyama branch is the main store. This time, we’ll introduce 3 recommended items sold at the takeout counter. The first one is the most popular katsu sandwich.

This shop uses pork tenderloin,  which makes it tender and moist. The sauce contains apple, giving it a strong sweet and fruity taste. The bread is fluffy and moist. It’s simple but really delicious. The next one is a different type of sandwich from earlier. It’s a sandwich with a minced meat cutlet that includes cheese.

It uses Camembert cheese from Tokachi, Hokkaido, so it’s rich and creamy. It’s a minced meat cutlet sandwich recommended for those who enjoy stronger flavors. The next item is freshly steamed pork bun. The dough has a thick, but fluffy and light texture.

Inside, it’s filled with minced meat made from a premium brand of pork from Yamagata Prefecture. It also includes tonkatsu sauce, giving it a fruity and subtle sweetness. The texture of the shiitake mushrooms  and bamboo shoots add a nice accent.

It’s a special pork bun that you can only taste at this shop, so be sure to give it a try! Alright, let’s move on to the next area. The last place is Takeshita-Dori, the most crowded spot in Harajuku.

It’s recommended to visit on weekdays because it gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays. First up is this shop, “LONG! LONGER!! LONGEST!!!” It’s a shop that is popular on social media. This time, we’ll introduce 2 items. First up is the TORNADO POTATO, where potatoes are skewered and fried.

There are barbecue, consommé,  and butter soy sauce flavors, and this time, we chose the butter soy sauce. The sweetness of the butter and the saltiness of the soy sauce goes well with the potatoes. It has a crispy texture and it’s delicious. Next up, we’ll have the Cheese Corn Dog.

When you drizzle ketchup and mustard to the freshly fried Cheese Corn Dog, it’s ready. It’s a popular item that has sold 2,000 pieces in a day. The Korean-style Cheese Corn Dog is typically coated in sugar, but this one doesn’t have any, so it’s not sweet.

It’s coated with finely chopped baguette on the outside and fried, giving it a crispy texture. Inside, there is plenty of cheese. The melted cheese is the best! The next place is TOTTI CANDY FACTORY. It’s a cotton candy specialty shop popular on social media.

The large cotton candy is popular, but this time, we’ll introduce the cotton candy packaged for takeout. It’s cute in rainbow colors. The flavors include strawberry, lemon, melon, soda, and grape. It’s fluffy, and the sweetness spreads in your mouth. The fruity aroma is delightful.

It’s convenient to carry around, and it’s great that you can enjoy various flavors at once. Next up is Imo-Pippi Harajuku. It’s a specialty shop for sweet potato desserts such as in Asakusa and Kyoto, and the Harajuku store opened in June 2023.

When you buy items at this store, you can dress in a Yukata to take pictures. This time, we’ll introduce a dessert available only at this store. It’s topped with sweet potato cream on a croissant dough waffle and caramelized. The butter and sweet potato give it a wonderful taste.

The crispy texture from the caramelized sugar adds a nice accent. Let us briefly introduce 2 other recommended menu items.  This one is a baked sweet potato  topped with butter and honey.  The sweetness of honey and melted butter soaked into the sweet potato.

This one is a baked sweet potato with a topping resembling crème brûlée. The melting texture is amazing! The next shop is Strawberry Fetish. It’s a specialty store for strawberry candy that opened in 2019 and is so popular that lines form on weekends.

Inside, there are 3 mitarashi dango and soybean flour. The saltiness of the soy sauce and the sweetness of the soybean flour go well with the dango. The texture of the dango is chewy. It’s easy to eat in bite-sized pieces. It’s perfect for a Japanese souvenir. Next up is Le Shiner.

There are plenty of photogenic food items,  making it a popular shop on social media. We’ll introduce 2 highly recommended items among them. After buying your ticket from the vending machine, when your dish is ready, they call out your number. First up, we’ll have the Rainbow Sandwich.
