【超過酷】大失敗続きで悲惨な全塗装…心身ともにズタボロになって完成した車がこちらです【ハイエースDIY】

Finally, the moment has arrived. In our long-running campervan project, this marks the final painting session. This white Hiace will be bid farewell to. Initially, painting wasn’t in the plan. But as we progressed, the desire grew. We’ve been using “Mobi Labo,” a shared garage in Yokohama for our DIY projects.

However, “Mobi Labo” doesn’t allow spray painting. So this time, our friends graciously invited us to the newly opened “86 Garage” in Gifu. Taking advantage of the offer! (Laughs) They’re currently preparing, and this garage is absolutely fantastic. We’re the first customers here. Interestingly, we’re here for DIY even before the owner… (laughs)

So, let’s get started with the painting. I want to explain the process for today, did a lot of research. Couldn’t figure it out, so… (laughs) Basically, we’ll be using Takara Paint’s water-based paint in biscuit color. Read the Takara Paint instructions.

Degrease, then apply the paint with a brush, but we want it cleaner and longer-lasting. So, after researching, we settled on this method. Therefore, we want to try it this time. First, we’ll do the foundation work. It might be dirty, so we’ll use this cleaner shampoo and scrub it with a 600-grit polishing pad.

Doing the foundation work with this, so we’re combining foundation and cleaning together. After that, take a look, various items are lined up on this side. After washing, use silicone remover for degreasing to make the paint adhere better. Then, apply bumper primer and plastic primer for the base.

Bumper primer is used for parts on this side, essentially plastic-like components. Plastic primer is used on this side of the vehicle body. This is to make the next paint adhere less likely to peel off. Basically, apply four coats. It’s quite a task…

Since it’s four coats, we’ve got plenty of plastic primer and bumper primer. The colors to be applied this time are rubber chipping, matte black, and regular glossy black. We also have the biscuit color I mentioned earlier, and how to use it will be a surprise. Yeah, we’ll figure it out after it’s done.

We’re using Penkiya-kun for painting. How is it, I wonder? I’ve heard good reviews, so I’m excited. Look at this, we bought it. Overfenders. The Hiace emblem. And this is the thing that covers the rear mirror. Yeah, we’ll cover it because we’re removing the back mirror. Let’s get started, beginning with sanding.

First, wet the entire car with water. Apply detergent and wash the car while sanding with abrasive material. It’s quite black. The dirt is coming off together. I really don’t know how much I can damage it. Look, it’s sanded. But, the owner of 86 Garage said it’s too gentle.

Like, it’s not like this. I’ll demonstrate now. Please. The white part of the body underneath has appeared. This! This is the appearance of the desired sanding. But, it’s okay if you don’t go this far. It depends on how far we’ll go. How far will you go? Well… Let’s aim for it (laughs).

Shall we go completely black? Also, this, it looks scratched, but it’s smooth. Seriously, if you go this far, even Takara paint won’t come off. I see. Amazing, right? It’s mind-boggling, but well, we’ve come this far, so let’s do it. Isn’t it amazing? It’s so clean. Incredibly clean. But, it’s easy to understand.

Very clear, very clear. There was really no need to buy a white Hiace. What a waste. It’s a bit higher because it’s white. Alright, let’s regain our composure. First, I want to remove the parts. This also makes it easier to sand, so let’s do it. Let’s sand evenly! Yes, I’ll do my best.

This process was originally the first step before sanding (laughs). Finally got it off… Difficult… incredibly difficult. Surprised. Continuing, we’ll remove all the parts, one by one. Many parts were challenging to remove, and the process took quite a bit of time as we had to research.

We won’t use the back mirror anymore, so we’re removing it. We’re also removing all the rear parts. Alright, now that we’ve successfully removed the parts and finished masking, let’s get started. I bought 150 abrasive materials. Our goal is this entire surface. We’ll do our best. Let’s do our best.

This can really make a difference. Yeah, let’s do it. This might be intense. Not at all? It’s not coming off at all. It is coming off, see? Impossible! Oh, this side is easier to sand. Oh, really? Maybe we need 80 grit sandpaper.

I tried doing it by hand, but it might take about six months. I borrowed a sander from the home center. I’ll use the sander. I’m not sure how far I’ll go, but after sanding with the machine, I can further sand by hand to achieve this level.

To sand this area… it’ll probably take another four months. Can you see this area? I can see it, it’s a bit different. This is probably the original color of the body. After sanding with the sander, it looks like this. We’ll take it to this level.

Later, we’ll apply a paint called “plasurf,” so it seems okay if we sand off a bit too much here. I’ll use the sander and hand sanding to bring it to this point. By the way, if you touch it with bare hands, it’s rough here, and smooth here. Well, let’s make it rough.

We’ll take it to this level. We’ll take it to this point. After using the sander, I’ll hand-sand the entire surface to ensure no rough spots are left. It’s easy to see on the left and right sides. It’s easy to see, looking like this, that it’s properly sanded.

I’ll sand the opposite side of the body using a sander and hand-sanding. Before sanding the front and back, I’ll remove the emblems. Using a heat gun and fishing line, I’ll remove the emblems. Wow, it looks clean. Of course, I’ll thoroughly sand the ceiling as well.

Yesterday and the day before, we worked for two days on sanding. It looks pretty good, right? What do you think? Looks good, looks good. The gloss has mostly disappeared, so next, I plan to sand with 600 grit. It’s tough. So, at this point, it’s like sanding and then preparing for painting.

Well, sanding is the most important, followed by preparation. Let’s do our best! Starting with the ceiling. Do your best, come on! At this point, Ryoko is battling muscle pain from sanding her entire body… After washing, I’ll thoroughly wipe with a cloth. I’ll do masking in areas that can be done now.

The owner of 86 Garage made a painting booth for us. Moving the car into the garage, I’ll finish masking the rest. Masking is complete like this. Masking is finally done. It was tough, seriously. After this, we’ll use silicone remover to degrease. It’s supposed to be fast from here.

After successfully degreasing, I’ll continue with the primer. A lot. Is this a 4-coat? 4 coats. It dries quickly, huh? Can I try it once? The color probably won’t change much. Somewhere a bit more visible, around here. Can’t really tell, huh? Do this about 4 times. About 4 times.

Okay, I’ll give it a try. Initially, you don’t need that much quantity; it’s okay. From the second time onwards, if you keep doing it like that, gradually, it will become whiter, I think. Got it. Yeah, like that, like that.

Actually, when Ryoko was bringing the car into the garage, she fell quite spectacularly, battling upper body bruising… With this, the primer is complete, and the Hiace has turned completely white. It took until last night to paint all the primer, so today, I’ll sand it with 1000 grit.

You don’t need to sand too hard. It’s like removing surface dust or something. Is this enough? This is good. We’re getting closer to painting, finally. It’s almost there. Take a good look, at this white. It’s a precious white Hiace, this color.

In places where it seems like there’s too much, try to make it a bit smoother to eliminate strong irregularities. After sanding, I’ll degrease with silicone remover. Finally, it’s time for painting. Here it comes. It’s here. The paint guy. There’s something attached. First, we’re checking how to use it.

Alright, the car will finally be this color. Exciting, Biscuit color. Looks good. OK! Finally, the moment of destiny. It’s important, this. This Hiace won’t be seen anymore, it’s deeply moving. Despite what will happen later, she looks happy. The first coat of paint has dried, but I messed up. It’s a big failure…

This part looks good. For the first coat, a slightly sparse feeling like this seems to be good. This is where I messed up on the first try. Look at this… It’s terrible. The worst. The cause was spraying too close. I wonder if that’s it. Perhaps the spray time was too long.

So, what to do? I’ll sand this. Sand everything, let’s go. Almost return to the original state. Just a bit of white showing. This side is quite dark, but it should be okay with this amount, I think. First, let’s sand this, and then we’ll do a second coat, adding unnecessary work.

Everyone, please be careful when painting. This was enough, but it seems like it was too much. Quite peeling. So, let’s do it. Perhaps because the base was solid, it was unexpectedly hard to sand… Sanded it like this; it was quite extensive. Applying a second coat.

Another incident occurred… the reason will be explained later. For now, I’ll apply a second coat to everything. I just finished applying the second coat, but I messed up. I messed up the second time too. This looks great, but Look at this… Look… Terrible, right? It’s been hit by rain.

The cause of this was the first coat I applied here. The paint dripped because I diluted it too much. Hey, don’t do that. It was about 20 seconds to 35 seconds with the measuring cup attached to the paint guy. But I went with 20 seconds. Let’s thin it out…

I diluted it from Takara Paint’s 0% to 15%, so I went with 10%. But it turned out too thin. The first was about 5% stronger. Let’s go with 5%. So, after it dries, from this sanding process… I thought I wouldn’t do it again.

But since the paint is thin, it might be better than the first time. I think it will dry faster than the first time. Because it’s thin. So, everyone, be careful. Diluting the paint is extremely important. Try it, and you’ll probably make all the mistakes that can be made.

It would have been better to buy a big bucket, throw in Takara paint and water, and do it at a consistent dilution. It was a learning experience. While it’s drying, I’ll attach the parts for painting. When it’s dry, I’ll sand the parts where the painting failed. Looks like it’s getting better.

Feels like it’s getting better, layer by layer. With some anxiety, I’ll proceed with the third and fourth coats. I’ll also paint the part that blocks the hole for the back mirror. How is it? Not bad. The glass is intact. If you’re not careful, it might stick to the glass, you know.

Good! The glass is coming out. Next, I’ll paint the lower part in a different color, so I’ll protect it. Finally, we’ve reached black. Let’s dye it black. It might have been good to dilute it. It’s quite concentrated. Alright, here we go! Black. Ah. Nervous.

It seems like I could go a bit more, but… I don’t know. Can I do it? Host: “A bit more cleanly from end to end would be better.” Host: “From here.” Host: “Spray from this distance at this angle.” Host: “Spray from this distance and at this low angle, covering up to this area.”

It feels satisfying as it turns black (laughs). Mirror parts are also painted in the same black. I applied four coats of black paint. It’s a matte black, by the way. For the lower part, I plan to use rubber chipping. I wonder how it will turn out. Feeling nervous. Because black looks clean.

Here we go. Looks pretty good, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! It looks great. Just as I imagined. Not too smooth, but just like this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It felt good, so it’s fine!

By the way, this chipping is originally black paint, but be careful because it seems to become sparse without black as the base. I also applied three coats of chipping. Taking it off. Feeling nervous. If it goes all the way up, it’ll be the worst. Looks incredibly cool. Super cool! Looks good! Cool!!

Host: “Nice!” Really cool! I’m also going to paint the emblem; I chose a glossy black for this part. I’ll attach the remaining parts and degrease them. I’ll apply four coats of bumper primer. After it dries, I’ll sand it and degrease it. First, I’ll paint everything with matte black.

I’ll spray the parts to be chipped. Finally, I’ll mask and paint the inside of the door. Before After Now, I’ll start attaching the parts! I didn’t do chipping for these parts; they’re matte black. I’ll finally attach the desired over fenders. Looks good. It would be shocking if they came off.

Well, it should be fine. I’ll fill in the spot where the back mirror was removed. A bit more to the left. Is this okay? Totally fine. Is this good? Good, it looks cool. This is quite a glossy black. The more you polish it, the more beautiful it becomes. Finally, finally… it’s done!!!

Finished safely. I worked really hard. It took about twice as long as expected. Amazing, I worked hard. But, I was really particular. I have a lot of attachment, it’s good. It turned out really beautiful. I’m really looking forward to going camping now. We did it! Looking forward to the room tour too.

This time, I really, really appreciate the owner of “86 Garage” who came. Host: “Yes! Good evening!” Host: “I’m the owner of 86 Garage!” Thank you very much. Host: “Well done, it’s really wonderful.” Thank you. When I was in trouble, I received timely and appropriate advice, which was really helpful. Thank you very much.

Host: “Here at 86 Garage, we offer various DIYs for camping cars.” Host: “We also create light trucks, Hiaces, and more, so please check it out!” Moreover, the owner of 86 Garage is posting really interesting short videos

On TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, so be sure to check it out as I’ll put it in the description. It’s really interesting; it’s currently the short video that I’m most recommending. I really appreciate that the owner was so bright, and it helped us stay positive until the end. Thank you very much.

Host: “Thank you too!” The Hiace camping car project is finally complete! Look forward to room tours and cost breakdowns in the future! On the separate channel [Kamurafuufu and Daily Life], I’m currently streaming lifestyle content like my dogs and dinner! Please check out that channel as well! ☺
