Grape-Picking and Winery Tours in Ajimu, West Japan’s Leading Grape Region!【Explore Oita Japan】

[Explore Oita Japan] Hi everyone My name is Mansi your navigator for today’s episode of Explore Oita Japan Today, we are going to go to Ajimu Town for a grape picking adventure So let’s go! This is Ajimu Town a part of Usa City in Oita Prefecture Grape cultivation was introduced to Ajimu in the 1960s

And since then Ajimu has become a popular destination for grape picking and winery visits Here we are at Osama no Budou Travel Village Farm We have here with us, Mr. Miyata Let’s get to know more about this place Mr. Miyata, when customers come here what can they do? Grape picking

So how many types of grapes are here? As you can see here 1 2 3 4 5 6 We have 6 types of grapes Every grape variety has its unique harvest season Some have already completed their harvest while others are still ongoing The grapes we can pick now are

– 1 2 3 4, 4 of them – Right So there are specific timings for specific grape picking I’m really excited to see what’s inside there – Can I go and see? – OK, of course Let’s go Let’s go There’s a window here Open it and if it looks good, then cut here Previously, the grape’s color was green so it was Shine Muscat but now, if you see it’s much more violet The darker ones are the better ones So let’s try to find the darker ones

Even though I’m short I don’t fit here If you have tried fruit picking in Japan you may have noticed that some farms offer an all-you-can-eat option which means you can enter the farm and eat as much as you want for a fixed price But here in Ajimu Town you pick the grapes pay for them by the weight

Then you can either enjoy them at the farm’s welcome area or take them home My basket is pretty heavy with all the grapes The experience that it gives you like cutting your own grapes choosing your own favorite ones checking the color, checking for ‘mushi’ which means insects

It’s just surreal, you know and this basket is a bit heavy – Hi again – Thank you OK, I will check the grapes Now, he will check the grapes Prices differ according to the types of grapes – so we check the prices with this sheet – Right

– Thank you – Then, wrap them up over there Thank you Now, let’s check out the flavor of these two grapes Let’s try the green one first I really like this one I think it’s tender, juicy and sweet Now, let’s try the red one It has kind of like a mixed taste like sweet and sour both at the same time I really like the fact that the grapes here are juicy Now, we have tried and tested these grapes out I’ve heard something interesting about this place which is that there’s a winery somewhere near Let’s check it out

I forgot my grapes! Now, we are here at Ajimu Winery Let’s check it out This winery was built in 2001 At that time, they primarily used locally grown grapes with some grapes sourced from overseas However, after 20 years 100% of the grapes used at the winery are grown exclusively in Ajimu

Now, we have Mr. Araki with us and he is going to give us a tour of this huge place Where do we go first? I will show you the processing facility first – Let’s go – OK, let’s go It is here that they create more than 30 types of wine

Do you have any recommendation for the best-selling wine? The top recommended wine in Ajimu Winery is sparkling wine Sparkling wine Ajimu’s sparkling wine places emphasis on its fine ingredients with carefully selected yeast and sugar added to the wine for fermentation and then matured for several years Wow, what place is this?

This is our wine storage and there’s also a gallery for vintage glasses Wow! It’s a bit cool here but it’s so good It looks like a castle, the texture The temperature is kept almost constant all year round This is where we store wine Some wine is stored in barrels here

We also store sparkling wine here as well Look at the barrels From here, we have a gallery for vintage glasses It’s so big Do you see this map? This is so huge and it’s all grape farmland We have around 20 types of grapes all over here Thank you Wow! This is a wine shop To meet the customer’s different tastes we have a wide range from sweet to dry wine

For customers to select from They have lots of kinds of wines here This is the wine tasting area Some of the most recommended and famous ones and it’s only 1,000 yen So do check it out Thank you, Mr. Araki for today I really appreciate your time and your energy Thank you so much

This time, our host visited the town of Ajimu in Usa City, northern Oita Prefecture. Ajimu is one of western Japan’s leading grape producing regions, and the agriculture of the Usa region was recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2013. Blessed by beautiful nature, over 100 varieties of grapes are cultivated here, and there are wineries to explore, too.

First, our host visited Osama no Budou Travel Village Farm. “Osama no Budou” means the “Grape of Kings,” and refers to the Kyoho grape that is ripened on the vine.

Up to 6 kinds of grapes can be enjoyed at the farm between August and September, with grape-picking experiences available. We recommend trying the luxurious Shine Muscat and large-sized Kyoho grape. Both are super juicy and utterly delicious!

Next, our host stopped at Ajimu Winery. Here around 20 types of grapes are grown for wine production.

Within the area, designed to resemble a winery in a forest, you’ll find various facilities such as a shop, brewery, storehouse, and vineyard.
Visitors can also see the wine-making process and explore the extensive vineyards. Additionally, inside the storehouse, there is an exhibition room showcasing vintage glasses, providing an enjoyable experience of glass history.

One of the most popular wines here is their sparkling wine, which has won numerous awards. Be sure to try a few Ajimu Winery brews for yourself in the tasting area!

This video showcases a bunch of ways to have fun in Ajimu, including gorging on tasty Ajimu grapes, which burst with natural sweetness and sourness, and come in large sizes that can be enjoyed as is when ripe; as well as relishing the rich and deep boutiques of wine! Be sure to check it out!
