あなたの知らない長崎の情報ひとつ入れました!長崎県人が歩く4年ぶりの長崎 第1回 グラバー園と大浦天主堂 Nagasaki Walking Tour with English CC Part 1

Hi everyone! I’m in Nagasaki of Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan Here we go! We are walking around this area today! “Thank you for riding” “The last stop, Nagasaki” The staff at this tourist information center is great! I bought a 1-day street car pass there. Let’s go!

Just outside of the station, there’s a statue that my uncle created. It’s the statue of a winner at “Peron,” Nagasaki’s dragon boat race. My uncle was an amazing school teacher and a great sculptor. Because he received the Grand Prix in the sculpture category at the Japan art exhibition called “Nitten,”

He was invited to The Imperial Palace to meet the emperor. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us, but when I visit Nagasaki, I always come here first to say hi to my uncle. Please visit this statue when you’re here! Let’s take a street car and start sightseeing!

When I was looking for the way to Glover Sky Road, a local lady showed me the way. Thank you, ma’am! See? People in Nagasaki are really warm-hearted and kind. Ah! This is it! It says, “Glover Sky Road.” Glover Garden is built on the slope of a hill.

So we enjoy it from top. Wow, I see it now! People enjoy the garden from top to bottom. I’m going to use this funicular called Glover Sky Road today. Children run fast! This funicular is totally free! (Residents around here use this.) Higher and higher! “The door is opening!”

Not opening! Oops! This side! So, finally, I’m approaching one of the entrances to Glover Garden. I’m gonna pay the admission and enter. “Welcome to Glover Garden!” This 1896 building was a dormitory for foreign sailors at Mitsubishi Shipyard. Cool Japanese ladies!

Sorry, guys! I don’t have any food for you! Sorry! Walker House! The Walker family’s father and son were both captains of ship companies. This hill commands a wonderful view of Nagasaki Port. It’s no wonder western people wanted to settle here.

Jiyuutei was Japan’s first western style restaurant, built in 1879. Let’s take a break! This restaurant was opened by chef Jokichi Kusano. Let’s see what they have. They have iced coffee! Let’s go in! Good afternoon! Just one, please!

Blue hydrangea jelly soda is popular, but I chose iced coffee and “castella”, a local sweet. There’s a piece of paper at the bottom. Don’t eat it. Jiyuutei has great views so I highly recommend it. Jokichi Kusano was the pioneer of western cuisine in Japan.

The statue of Giacomo Puccini, composer of “Madama Butterfly.” He never visited Nagasaki. This is the statue of Tamaki Miura, an opera singer who played Cio Cio-san in “Madama Butterfly” more than 2, 000 times. Cio Cio-san points to the entrance of Nagasaki Port, hoping Pinkerton will show up soon.

Have you ever heard of a Japanese restaurant chain called, “Ringer Hut?” The company name came from the name of the owner of this house. This is the living room of Ringer House. Finally, I’m approaching Glover House, a World Heritage site. Former Glover House.

The oldest western-style wooden house in Japan. If you know the story of “Madama Butterfly,” you know Cio Cio-san’s house overlooked Nagasaki Port. Cio Cio-san also can see the port entrance from the house. I’m going to flip the camera now.

See? From Glover House, we can see the entrance to the port. Foreign people have given this house a nickname. The “Madama Butterfly House.” Let’s check out the interior! Thomas Glover, a trade merchant who owned this house, established the “Japan Brewery Company.” The company is now called, “Kirin Beer Co.”

Wow! Cool! Look at this! Are those scones? This room was a gathering place for family and friends. They even had an ikebana flower arrangement teacher. Let’s keep going! But I’m gonna walk slowly. I don’t have to hurry. It’s a bedroom. Good ventilation! Spacious dining room.

Around the 1850s, eight-sided houses, also called, “Octagon Houses,” were popular in the USA. This house is like four Octagon Houses together. I’m walking around the house. Wow, there’s a stable! I’m sure there’s no horse here, but I still want to check it out. I see. Mr. Glover’s stable.

I can’t believe they even had horses here on the hill. The view of the port from here is spectacular! By the way, across the port. Mt. Inasa is 333 meters/1,092.5 feet high, as high as Tokyo Tower. We have to go through this museum to exit from Glover Garden.

The museum has many floats for the Nagasaki Okunchi Festival. Amazing! So cool! These are for a Dragon Dance! “National Treasure,” Oura Cathedral. Inside “the oldest church in Japan” was relaxing. Let’s leave Oura Cathedral. Wow, so many tourists!

Just next to Oura Cathedral, I found a temple and a Buddhist cemetery. Interesting! A cat! It’s so pleasant today. Not cold at all! Where’s a cat? Kitty here! I can’t find it! Kitty Kitty! It says here, “The Triangle of Prayers.”

Inside this small triangle is a Buddhist temple, a Shinto shrine and a Catholic cathedral. Three different religions coexist here. I love walking on small streets like this! Good afternoon! This is hard! So many stairs. People in Nagasaki have to deal with these every day.

In next video, I’ll look for “something” near Spectacles Bridge. “Found it!” You found it? Found it! Indeed! And, walk to Chinatown and Dejima Island. I hope you liked this video, made with my love for Nagasaki.

Thank you very much for watching! See you next time!
