In today’s Japan Walking Tour series, join me on a sunset walk at Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama!

Kurashiki (倉敷) is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the capital city of Okayama.

Kurashiki has a preserved canal area dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name “Kurashiki” can roughly translate as “the town of warehouses” for rice warehouses.

Many of Kurashiki’s former warehouses have been converted into museums, shops and cafes. Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki’s museums, displaying a large collection of works by famous Western artists.

This canal area is a 10-minute walk from Kurashiki Station. You can enjoy a nice peaceful walk and feel like you are in historical Japan.
