For me, less is always more. In this image of Bryce, I did a simulation of sunlight using one strobe with a standard eight-inch hood at a distance of around 20 feet from her. I positioned the light high enough and to her left to create the desired shadow just off her right. Basically, I am making my primary light source the same size as the sun if you were outdoors. To soften the harsh contrast of the direct light simulating the sun, I used a 7 ft Octa Softbox just off-camera left with a low output to just fill in the shadows. You could also use a 4×8 ft white panel to the left of the camera to fill in the shadows, but I believe you have much more control using a strobe with a large modifier.”
